Edith Durham fue una viajera, artista y escritora británica que destacó, sobre todo, por sus escritos antropológicos sobre Albania. A gorgeous 19th century Albanian headpiece ✨“… guided for the most part by mysterious superstitions and beliefs hidden in the recesses of his soul, and cares no jot for priest or hodja when their teaching runs counter to tyeir own Albanian ideas as to the fitness of things."— Edith Durham (1908) Photo: This unique piece of Albanian Headdress from late 19th century, notable for its intentional representational design. The band would be attached to the top of the head with the stiffened part and hang down to cover the plaited hair at the back. To make the tiny metal coils used for the crescents etc, metal wire is wound round a thin rod to form a cylinder, which is then cut into peices and the pieces sewn down, a technique known as purl work. Edith Durham records seeing similar crescent symbols worn in the hair in her Albanian travels, and notes that they reflect pre-Christian, Pre-Muslim beliefs. In 'High Albania and its Customs', London 1908, she writes: "The Christian married women of Maltsia e madhe wear a crescent of silver filagree or of gold braid on their caps. They vow and declare that this has nothing to do with the Turk : " It is our custom. We have always done it. You cannot live long with the up-country tribesman without finding that the religion he professes is the merest surface veneer. TIRANË, 2 tetor/ #ATSH/- Muzeu Historik Kombëtar përkujtoi sot në 5 vjetorin e ndarjes nga jeta, albanologun e famshëm Robert Elsie. Në muajin maj të vitit 2016 në sallën UNESCO të Muzeut Kombëtar, studiuesi Robert Elsie, mes miqsh dhe të ftuarish të interesuar, prezantoi një pjesë të fondit të 450 fotografive të panjohura që Miss Edith Durham, ka bërë gjatë udhëtimeve të saj kryesisht në Shqipëri dhe Mal të Zi. Robert Elsie lindi më 29 qershor 1950 në Vankuvër (Vancouver) të Kanadasë. Ai ndoqi Universitetin e Kolumbisë Britanike (University of British Columbia), ku studioi për filologjinë klasike dhe gjuhësinë dhe u diplomua më 1972. Po në atë vit, erdhi në Europë me një bursë studimesh. Robert Elsie vazhdoi studimet e larta në Universitetin e Lirë të Berlinit Perëndimor (Freie Universität Berlin), pastaj në Shkollën Praktike të Studimeve të Larta (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) në Paris, në Institutin e Dublinit për Studime të Larta (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies) në Irlandë, dhe në Universitetin e Bonit (Universität Bonn), ku mbrojti doktoraturën për gjuhësi krahasimtare dhe keltologji më 1978. When I hiked through the #AccursedMountains in #Kosovo, #Montenegro and #Albania last June, I met older Albanians who still referred to #EdithDurham as their mountain queen. I’d stumbled across a copy of her 1909 book #HighAlbania while preparing for my trip, and I was immediately hooked by her descriptions of a tribal society where blood feuds were governed by a centuries-old kanun of customary laws. She crisscrossed the #Balkans on foot, horseback and sometimes in disguise at a time when this was one of the most isolated parts of the continent. And her book provides a rare first-hand look at a turbulent corner of #Europe during the last years of the #Ottoman Empire. For #albania #book #travel #historians and fans of #armchairtravel the book is High Albania by solo English traveller #EdithDurham published in 1909. Albania was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Edith was a rare sight, travelling with her Albanian guides and with local fixers (my word, not hers) taking photos, drawing sketches and making detailed notes on dress and customs: hospitality, blood fueds, cross dressing virgins, rugged landscapes, stunning vistas, food and drink, religion and guns. In Albania still, these heights are called the Accursed Mountains. While her tale is of another time, the opening line still resonates: "The great river of life flows not evenly for all peoples." So true.

To make the tiny metal coils used for the crescents etc, metal wire is wound round a thin rod to form a cylinder, which is then cut into pieces and the pieces sewn down, a technique known as purl work. Edith Durham records seeing similar crescent symbols worn in the hair in her Albanian travels, and notes that they reflect pre-Christian, Pre-Muslim beliefs. In 'High Albania and its Customs', London 1908, she writes: "The Christian married women of Maltsia e madhe wear a crescent of silver filagree or of gold braid on their caps. They vow and declare that this has nothing to do with the Turk : " It is our custom. We have always done it. You cannot live long with the up-country tribesman without finding that the religion he professes is the merest surface veneer. He is guided for the most part by mysterious superstitions and beliefs hidden in the recesses of his soul, and he cares no jot for priest or hodja when their teaching runs counter to his own Albanian ideas as to the fitness of things." Mary Edith Durham ishte antropologe e artiste angleze, një ndër mikeshat më të shquara të shqiptarve e cila i dedikoi një pjesë të mirë të jetës së saj tokës, kulturës e traditave shqiptare. Ajo lindi në një familje të ngritur të Londrës më 1863. Ndoqi studimet në Akademinë Mbretërore të Arteve ku u formua si artiste. Pas një periudhe me shqetësime shëndetësore, me rekomandimin e mjekut, kura që iu sugjerua ishte udhëtimi. Kështu, në moshën 37‑vjeçare ajo nis rrugëtimin e njëkohësisht historinë e saj e gjatë me Ballkanin, e specifikisht Shqipërinë. Libri më i njohur i Edith Durham, “Shqipëria e Epërme”, përjetëson udhëtimet e saj nëpër Shqipëri. Shqiptarët e magjepsën Edith Durhamin jo vetëm me tokat e historitë e tyre, por me traditat e zakonet ku ajo gjeti “të shkuarën e gjallë”. Ajo shpenzoi rreth 20 vite mes Ballkanit e Anglisë dhe promovoi me përkushtim të drejtën e shqiptarëve për pavarësi, duke krijuar dhe Komitetin Anglo‑Shqiptar më 1912. Edith Durham u nda nga jeta në moshën 81‑vjeçare, në vitin 1944, dy javë para se Shqipëria të vihej nën kontrollin e komunistëve. Në nekrologjinë e botuar tek The Guardian shkruhej se zonja e madhe “braktisi artin për udhëtimin”.
