Oh, this story is just so special. I adored Birdie, Jane, Ada, Frankie, and Min. These ladies that are daughters, mothers, sisters, friends,missing each other, losing one another, loving and caring in the best and hardest of ways. They suffer loss of loved ones through death and distance, they have guilt and regret, but so much to give. The story is sad and could be a difficult read, but it has so much happiness, kindness, and warnth too. Its poignant, reflective and full of charm. It made me think about life and what really matters. I thought Frankie was just fabulous, and each character had emotional depth and flaws that are as real as can be. 📚 Book Review - In Cheap We Trust The Story of a Misunderstood American Virtue by Lauren Weber ⭐⭐⭐ This was from my TBR shelf and satisfied the "I" of my journey this year to read the alphabet... I kinda chopped off the author's name, so I made sure to list it above. I received this from a @goodreads win in 2009. I went to review it, also, on Goodreads and founds this: "This is interesting. It's one of those books that makes you want to make someone else close to you read -- so you can discuss it. There are a lot of points Weber makes that point to why we got here (this economic mess)." Ha! This is what I wrote in 2009 - and I forgot I read it - DUH - even when I put it on my "currently reading" status. But, I needed an "I" book for my reading the alphabet challenge, and I wanted to take as many books from my TBR bookshelf, so mission accomplished. All I can say is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. 2009 certainly was a volatile time, but 2024 is pretty messy, too! Who knows what the future will hold?! 🐾The Fake Mate🐾 It took me awhile to finish The Fake Mate because I was dragging it out intentionally. Sometimes I read some not that great books and I need a chaser book to cleanse the palette. This book is definitely a chaser book. I knew I’d love it and I totally did so I dragged it out and read a little at a time to make it last longer. 🤭 The growing theme of STEManist romance books is quickly moving to the stop of my favorite genres. In this story we follow Mackenzie and Noah who are both doctors working in the same hospital IN DENVER, where I live. They work in different departments but Noah has a reputation of being the resident asshole, so people kinda steer clear of him until one day Mackenzie panics and uses him as a fake boyfriend in a conversation with her grandmother. She then approaches him to ask him if he wants to pretend to be her fake boyfriend and he actually has a side mission to complete that also requires him to have a mate, so he agrees. They go on some fake dates….then the lines start to blur and 🥰 *girl squeals*. Everything turns out great in the end. Het taalgebruik van Gail Honeyman is soms behoorlijk lastig! 😬 Ik heb me dan ook echt door de eerste 30% van het boek heen moeten worstelen. Granite Harbor✨ There is a serial killer on the loose in a small coastal town in Maine. It starts with the body of a teenage boy found on a historical settlement reenactment site. Alex is the only detective in the small town and it’s his first murder case. His daughter, Sophie, is friends with the victim. This was a slow paced police procedural murder mystery with an atmospheric small town vibe. I enjoyed the serial killer aspect and the writing was good. It is a little graphic but that doesn’t bother me personally. I didn’t like the clairvoyance aspect involved and that took away from the story for me. I also knew who the killer was pretty early so I didn’t get any surprise or twists. The mind of a serial killer is a crazy thing and learning the backstory and childhood events of this one was intriguing and I enjoyed that part of the story. Miss Morgan’s Book Brigade by Janet Skeslein Charles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I have read a lot about WWI, both fiction and non-fiction and this was on a topic that I knew very little about. Based on a true story, Jessie Carson, a librarian at New York Public Library, goes to France to work for CARD. Located just miles from the war, she and other women work together to help rebuild French communities - she is especially focused on a children’s library in a mobile van. It is told in alternating perspectives - in 1918 and 1987. The 1987 timeline is told from NYPL Librarian, Wendy Peterson. She starts learning about Jessie Carson and the CARDS - researching to write a book about them. The research done on this book was incredible. The story told was wonderful - heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once. I loved the dual timelines - i was never confused or unhappy reading from either perspective. Night seasons. We all go through them. They're not fun, and they seem to last forever. We stumble around, often lost and confused and feeling very alone. And yet, character is born in adversity, tenacity develops, and the things that aren't important seem to fall away. I'm thankful to be leaving my current night season. It's been a difficult time, but I know the valuable lessons I've learned will stay with me for the rest of my life. The book, which spans across four decades, explores loyalty, friendship, mental health, betrayal, consequences, but more importantly what it means to truly love. I finished this book last night and I woke up with puffy eyes this morning. I sobbed, ugly cried, all the above. 😭 Those Padavano sisters and the love they have for each other will tug at the heartstring of even the biggest skeptic of an epic generational family saga. I typically don’t reach for historical fiction / family drama but this book landed on my lap serendipitously when a friend who I sometime buddy read with mentioned it and I can’t be more thankful. This modern take on the classic LITTLE WOMEN is slow burn and it took a little while to warm up but like a beautiful painting that reveals itself with each masterful brush stroke, the book’s true strength and beauty come to life with every page thought the eyes four sisters and the people in their lives. When Abby Jimenez and Meghan Quinn have a new book out, it’s an autobuy and they were livesavers this month. Their writing just brings me so much joy, Abby Jimenez knows how to hit the emotions hard and Meghan Quinn knows how to bring the laughs and antics! Both Just for the Summer and Bridesmaid for Hire were great, just the thing to get out of a reading funk. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait most likely another year for Abby Jimenez to release another book but never fear, Meghan Quinn has minimum three more coming out this year. Hidden Rooms was a slow burn suspense with intriguing characters set in a small town full of dark secrets. It was pretty dark but also had its funny moments I appreciated (Riley’s mom was quite a character). When Riley’s friend (and her brother’s fiance) Beth is found dead and her brother Ethan accused of murder, Riley is driven to solve the case while battling inexplicable physical symptoms. Hidden rooms tackles some serious issues like chronic pain, opioid crisis, and the way female health concerns are often so disregarded it that we start doubting our own sanity! I loved all red herrings along the way and I loved that I didn’t figure out the culprit on my own because suspicion was thrown around in equal measure. If you enjoy your murder mysteries on the darker side, complex family dynamics, amateur sibling investigations then you will definitely want to check out this one! Today’s plans… Allen Bratton’s debut novel HENRY HENRY is my reading focus today. I love reading books that use as their starting point the plays of Shakespeare, in this case, the Henry plays. Another 99p April kindle special 🩷 and my second book by Diane Jeffrey ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 A respectable 3.5 for The Other Couple 📖 Driving home from a romantic weekend in Devon, Kirsten & Nick accidentally run over a man walking his dog. They know they should report it, call for help, something, but that would mean revealing their secret, and they just aren't ready for that! Amy knows Greg wouldn't just up and leave her, so when he fails to return from a dog walk, she's convinced he's come to harm and even more dertermined to find out the truth, no matter what that takes! 💭 Told in dual POV through Kirsten and Amy, you follow the aftermath of the day of the accident and how this affects all parties involved. It becomes clear from early on in the story that someone is on trial, and their perspective is told through some anonymous character entries. I liked this aspect, and it keeps you guessing, as the story progresses, you realise this could be a number of people awaiting their fate! The story is filled with lies, betrayal and revenge, and a good twist as you come to the end! The only thing that knocked the rating down was the middle of the book. I found myself drifting a little and losing interest for a short time. I’m not going to lie, I actually screamed (and my coworkers can attest to that) when I saw this hardcover edition edition of Throne of Broken Gods by @amber.v.nicole at the Book Boudoir! 📱Zory App Did you read any choose your own adventure books when you were a kid? I always loved those because the plot would be different based on what path I chose. I would read them over and over to see what the possibilities were. So a romance book that allows me to make choices along the way? I’m so in! Zory is a new app with full length romance books by some of your favorite best selling authors and is marketed as romance books you play. I met Kate and Matt, the founders of Zory, at Readers Take Denver last weekend. Despite the chaotic mess that was the conference, they were a ray of sunshine! I’m currently reading my first book on Zory, Private Property by @skyewarrenbooks . I have the app on my phone and iPad and appreciate that I can switch between devices. So far I am loving it!
