The 1969 O-Pee-Chee baseball card set includes 218 cards. This was the first year for Major League Baseball in Canada so the checklist is heavily skewed towards the Expos (and even the Seattle Pilots). Unlike in the @topps set, there is no Reggie Jackson rookie card. The backs of the cards did not include French text, though they were printed with “Made in Canada” and have a bright red color as opposed the peach colored Topps backs. Also interesting is that each pack included one of 24 Deckle Edge card inserts (similar, but not identical, to the 33-card set inserted into ‘69 Topps Series Three packs). Per usual, the OPC cards are far scarcer than their Topps counterparts. @psacard Pop Report: only 170 Clementes have been graded compared to 5,106 of the Topps version. Another unsung hero of Neo Soul, Hip Hop and Contemporary Jazz. Are you a fan of Masego, Kaidi Tatham, Yuseef Kamaal, Athletic Progression,or J Dilla, Erykah Badu or even Robert Glasper like me? Check this out. I stumbled onto Eric Lau. The cover of “One of Many“ (2013, Kilawatt Music Limited) rang a bell. I found it and “Makin' Sound” (Kilawatt Music Limited) when I was digging in Mint Records in Copenhagen, and it made me even more curious with its red color-photo of a young man listening to music and the cover of Bobbi Humphrey’s Blacks And Blues (one of the best produced albums in history) in the background and the mysterious title and cover of Quadrivium (2011, Kilawatt Music Limited) all in one go. The two latter are 20 song instrumentals reminiscent of Dilla or Madlib and the first is a full blown neo soul classic that I knew from the second the needle dropped. It’s almost a complete discography of this Londoner with Chinese’s heritage- now living in South East China. I ordered his debut album New Territories (2008, Ubiquity) also a super slick neo soul outlet that just like “One of Many” showcases different singers on different tracks - here is where Robert Glasper is a good comparison his first Black Radio came out at this time. And as we wait on the third Black Radio 3 I eagerly await this über talents third album with vocals. On the 3rd picture you see albums from my collection where Lau a has been involved. It’s amazing to me how many of my favorites he touched ether as producer or engineer. He just makes shit sound good. Oh where is Badu you might ask. Eric: “My sister was into acid jazz music at that time, like Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai, that’s kind of very London-centric. Then Erykah came. “Wow, this is crazy. This is really uplifting. It’s empowering. There are messages in there.” And invited by DJ Jazzy Jeff Lau got to work with the producer of Baduizm (that turns 25 today!) James Poyser (see earlier post) on the album The PLAYlist - Chasing Goosebumps (2017, Playlist Music). Full circle. (And as I write this I realize I miss two new instrumental albums).
