Er ist promovierter Literaturwissenschaftler mit einer Dissertationsschrift über Massenkultur um 1800 und habilitierter Medienwissenschaftler mit einer Habilitationsschrift zur Kunst in digitalen Medien (“Textmaschinen, Kinetische Poesie, Interaktive Installationen”, Transcript 2011). Roberto Simanowski hatte Professuren für German Studies an der Brown University in Providence, USA, und für Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Basel und der City University of Hong Kong inne. Außerdem ist er Gründer und Herausgeber des Journals für Kunst und Kultur digitaler Medien (siehe unter: dichtung-digital.de, 1999-2014) und Autor mehrerer Bücher zu Kunst, Kultur und Politik der digitalen Medien, u.a.: “Interfictions. Vom Schreiben im Netz” (Suhrkamp 2002); “Data Love” (Matthes & Seitz 2014, Columbia University Press 2016), “The Death Algorithm and Other Digital Dilemmas” (MIT Press 2018). Für “Todesalgorithmus. Das Dilemma der künstlichen Intelligenz” (Passagen 2020) erhielt Simanowski 2020 den Tractatus-Preis für philosophische Essayistik. I took this picture in one of the richest bookstores of New Delhi. After reading books I’m reminded that every cultural movement that erupts from the dust of a state disrupts the pre-existing notions of what is legitimate and authentic. Wars often become the generators of such movements. The ways of perceiving things are transformed, if not contradicted, to a great extent. Thinkers like Derrida and Lyotard are always going to be significant for a scholar of Postmodernism. Lyotard in ‘The Postmodern Condition’ questions the power of science and reason. Non-rational forces such as emotions and sensations are also important. Human being for Lyotard is not the central subject of knowledge. Postmodernism has infused the thought that the world around us cannot be understood in terms of progress only. Reality can never be captured accurately in any narrative whatsoever. A scholar of Postmodernism always believes that even factual and rational knowledge can be made contingent. FACULTY HIGHLIGHT Leora Fridman is a Literary Studies professor currently teaching Intermediate Non-Fiction. She enjoys the opportunity to teach students in the middle of the series while they are in the process of getting to know themselves as writers. Leora strongly believes that one of the best things one can get out of a writing class is the capacity to read as a writer, which she emphasizes in her teaching. Outside of her work at The New School, Leora also teaches in the Narrative Medicine program at Columbia University. She writes primarily non-fiction, but has also published books of poems and just finished writing her first novel, Goldenrod.
