It’s my second year of actively growing more flowers than vegetables and it has been such a learning and fun experience. I’ll tell you have I gained so much knowledge from last season, and I have also made a ton of mistakes already. I did fall sow some cold hardy plants, and I will 100% be doing more do that this year as all of them survived. Note to self: pull back frost cloth or you will literally cook your plants. You can see from the empty spots lol. Also another note to self, do not start yarrow ever again. They are literally weeds. I have enough for a lifetime now. When we first bought the farm, we knew we wanted some company and began with our Nigerian Dwarf Goats. These guys are our pride and joy, and Jess runs our secondary businesses around our goats (@earlybirdfamilyfarm) Our geese our Sebastopol Geese, a threatened breed of goose that's well known for their lavish feathers. Unlike their Canadian relatives, Sebastopol geese are known to be great companions and friendly! They will often hang out where the people are! And of course, many of you have met Zeus and Xena, our livestock guardian dogs. These two are big softies with a critical job here on the farm. Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) are bred to chase away predators and keep the geese, goats, and chickens safe. Plus, they have the added benefit of being ridiculously snuggly and sweet. Not the most glamorous thing at a flower farm, but one of the most important and time sensitive is seed starting. There are some seeds that take 200 days until maturity, and some that can take 20-plus days just to germinate! Different seed sizes and seedling sizes and many different planting requirements mean keeping a good record of seeding and care. Here you see in the back, Maverick Appleblossom geraniums, and if you look VERY carefully, you will see in the foreground tiny lisianthus seedlings. Both were planted on the 17th of February. Let’s talk about soil blocks! When I started growing flowers, I used the 72 seedling trays and my growing racks only had 6 shelves. This meant I could grow a maximum of 432 plants. When you account for germination rates, some seedlings randomly dying, those numbers go down really quickly. However, since I made the switch to soil blocks, I can fit double the amount of what I used to plant. This is so helpful for small space growers. There are so many benefits of soil blocking; -Air pruning (aka no rootbound plants) -Smaller space friendly -Easier to transplant -Faster growing I mainly use 3/4 blocks and very rarely use my 2inch block, unless for tomatoes and to upsize slower growing plants like eucalyptus. Gather in for the second in a series of Stories from the Field🌱 Early spring is approaching as the calendar continues through a grower’s week 9. The purple glow of my basement grow room lights keep a vigilant watch over soil studded germination trays . I’ve recently seeded trays of cool hardy flowers that can be planted out in 6-8 weeks, just before last frost date. This process continues in steady succession as many warm season annuals-like zinnia, seeded dahlia, marigold, sunflowers and celosia-get started around week 10. 🗓️ The trade of winter quiet for the steady work of spring planting and bed maintenance has begun. Looking back in my camera roll to remind myself dahlias are worth the effort 🤪🫠 We stored as clumps this year and chose to do a spring divide. With babies, it felt way too hectic to tackle the project in the fall. But, here we are on the other side, dividing like crazy.
