La aparición de los primeros félidos en Sudamérica tuvo lugar durante el gran intercambio biótico del Pleistoceno (hace unos 3 millones de años). Entre estos félidos, el antepasado del grupo Leopardus mostró una gran capacidad de diversificación. Actualmente se acepta que hay nueve especies en este género: Leopardus pardalis, L. wiedii, L. tigrinus, L. guttulus, L. colocolo, L. jacobita, L. Geoffroy, L. pajeros y L. guigna, y recientemente se ha propuesto una división de L. tigrinus en tres especies: L. tigrinus, L. pardinoides y Leopardus emiliae, la división de L. pajeros en L. garleppi, L. munoai, L. braccatus, y L. pajeros. Los estudios moleculares y paleontológicos muestran que las tres primeras especies evolucionaron tempranamente en el norte de Sudamérica, mientras que las otras especies aparecieron hace relativamente poco, principalmente en el sur de Sudamérica. Our study focused on an ugly, chunky blob of a fossil washed onto a beach in eastern Texas from submerged deposits in the Gulf of Mexico. Tumbled and abraded from being transported through the waters of the Gulf, the fossil was still identifiable as the scimitar-cat Homotherium because the distinctive saber-tooth was not fully erupted and was safely stored away inside its alveolus (i.e., the tooth socket)!
