Trying to find the perfect woodland to capture bluebells is really hard in Devon, so yesterday I moved just over the border into Dorset and what I thought would be a good place after checking online, but alas it wasn't. I then thought about going furter along to another I'd seen online but it would have been an other hours or so drive, and once I saw what the traffice was like I gave up on that idea :( Then I remembered Blackbury Camp near Seaton in Devon. The last time I was there was on 11th April 2021 but I was a little too early so never got to see it in all its beauty, so headed off to see what it was like now. I was pleasantly surprised as there was a massive carpet of bluebells in the centre of the old Iron Age hill fort. The sun was out for a very short time when I arrived but then decided to hide away. I really wanted to wait until the sun had dropped down low to give a softer glow across the scene but in the end I didn't stay as it was also quite cold in the wind and wasn't sure if the clouds would go away. I made the most of the lovely weather yesterday and headed out for the whole day with the camera. I started off looking for woodlands that will have a great scene once the wild garlic and bluebells finally arrive, but then decided to head off to North Devon and the coast around Hartland Quay. I started off at Speke's Mill Mouth Waterfall and knew the weather wasn't going to be that good to start with but was due to clear by sunset, and as I left there at around 16:30 I had my doubts as I was walking in very low cloud with hardly any view! A total distance of just over 2km with about a 120m elevation so the hips took a little bashing! I arrived at Hartland Quay and within about an hour the clouds were starting to break so I had some hope that the Met Office were correct. As the time went on towards sunset the thick clouds dispersed and left some lovely wispy clouds in the sky for the setting sun to light up. The only downside was slipping on some seaweed at the bottom of the slope down to the beach, hitting my right elbow and breaking my Formatt Hitech Filters filter holder and 0.9 Reverse ND Filter, which is the main filter I use for sunsets! Need to save up now to replace them as I don't want to use the insurance again as only claimed recently, plus the excess would be half the cost.
