New York Ninja (2021) dir. John Liu & Kurtis Spieler After his pregnant wife is murdered by a street thug, a sound technician for a New York news studio becomes a masked vigilante ninja hellbent on gaining vengeance and slicing crime in half. So something interesting about this movie: It was originally shot in 1984 and remained unfinished up until 2021 when Vinegar Syndrome got their hands on the unfinished print. The film was missing both its audio and original script, so the entire movie had to be dubbed over, the scenes re-arranged to make a more coherent feature, and the script re-written. What you get is a movie that feels like an old kung fu movie with a so bad its good english dub. You even have a pretty decent main cast backing up the front of the movie with names like: Don Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Michael Berryman, and Cynthia Rothrock! Earlier this year we watched the MTV backed kung fu dub Volcano High, and this just blows that out of the water. This was just in a whole other league from that movie. The film itself is fun, campy, and full of silly charm that I feel most bad movie viewers will just vibe with. It reminded me of Hard Ticket to Hawaii if it were just a slight less raunchy. Overall, this movie was a hit for both Allen and I and I always love learning about interesting movies with a fascinating history such as this.
