We spent yesterday in Everglades City. We went out in a boat tour into Everglades National Park in the Ten Thousand Islands area. Not very birdy but quite a few dolphins. A beautiful afternoon on the water we walked through a Mangrove swamp on a boardwalk and had a nice dinner at a restaurant on the water. Topped iff the day watching the sunset. We started our trip on a land so hot and humid that bromeliads, orchids, and ferns don’t need soil to grow and thrive on nothing but tree branches. Where the ground is so saturated that a six-inch rise in elevation creates a whole new ecosystem where pines and palms grow together with a whole list of tropical species. We paddled down a river whose banks are stalked by panthers, over eelgrass beds with grazing manatees, and through cypress swamps haunted by the growls of unseen gators. The silhouettes of birds whose beaks of outlandish proportions resemble medieval plague doctors were seen lurking around every corner. We then paddled through a maze of mangroves where stingrays, dolphins, and sea turtles swam in abundance, until we finally landed on the white-sand beaches of key islands, the last piece of land before the Gulf. Abandoned conch shells and horseshoe crabs washed ashore with every tide, Jack crevalle and red drum chased bait fish just feet from my hammock, and hoards of biting midges came out en masse each sunset. It was about as close to paradise as I’ve ever found. After just a two-night, 20 mile canoe trip through some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in America, it’s safe to say the Everglades is one of our favorite Parks.
