Having a great time birding in Texas this weekend. Took a trip down memory lane at High Island, a spot I visited back in 2019 with @hayley.crews and where I met @skeysimages for the first time. 🤝🤪 This place never disappoints. For those of you new to my page, welcome! I’m a 57 year old landscape, seascape and travel photographer and have been based on the Sunshine Coast in Australia for almost 25 years. Before photography entered my life, I have been a bit of a gypsy, working on the Great Barrier Reef on liveaboard dive boats, cook/hostess on 4WD tours in the remote Kimberley, Western Australia, working in a café in Alice Springs, and many more ‘lifestyle’ jobs that pay crap but OH the views!! I think I really fell in love with nature, diving on the reef, and discovering a whole new life underwater….fascinating. Of course there were a few hiccups like when a remora (parasitic sucker fish) tried to cling on to my head (they usually pick sharks but ok) at 30 metres underwater……or getting out of the tour vehicle and almost stepping on a deadly brown snake…..one day I might write a book. In the meantime, enjoy my photography! Recently I experienced visits to an ED and 2 private hospitals on the Sunny Coast (not me, don’t worry!) and I was GOBSMACKED by the amount of paperwork required for a discharge……seriously…..handwritten multiple pages of nonsense and gobbledygook and repetitive information. I was thinking, here we are in 2024, and it takes nurses hours to create a paper trail that is so unnecessary! Nurses should be taking care of patients, not laboriously hand writing paperwork….isn’t that what computers were invented for?? Were we not aiming for a ‘paperless society’?? Why isn’t this all on a computer system that any medical practitioner can access INSTANTLY……and then I was thinking, oh my gosh. What if we went outside and the papers blew away in the wind? We’d be screwed!! . Okay and a big shout out to nurses everywhere. Yes, of course some are cranky and rude (they are probs overworked and over it), but generally nurses work SO HARD and wow when you get one that shows empathy and compassion…..they need to be paid much, much more. When you’re sick and in pain, you need that. Don’t you reckon? Fancy bird with a fancy name — Lazuli Bunting. 🩵 I was surprised to spot a whole flock of them recently. The first time I saw them was a couple years ago, and there were only like, two at the time. For today's National Parks Week post, we take you west from Anchorage across Cook Inlet to Lake Clark National Park & Preserve. Nestled in the Chigmit Mountains of the Aleutian Range, and surrounding one of Alaska's more stunning lakes. Qizhjeh Vena, meaning "a place where people gathered lake" in Dena'ina Athabascan, is the original name of Lake Clark. The park was established in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter signed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act into law. One of the special roles that the park plays for Alaskans is that it is a place where rural residents can engage in customary and traditional subsistence activities like hunting and fishing. But for visitors, it is a spectacular country for hiking, backpacking, floating, and fishing.
