Following today’s announcement that the King will follow The late Queen as Patron of the @RNLI, The Duke of Kent has celebrated 55 years as President of the charity by returning to the first lifeboat station he visited in this role. 🛟 In 1970, as the new President of RNLI, His Royal Highness visited Fraserburgh following a lifeboat disaster which killed all but one of the crew. During this visit, The Duke met the families of those who had lost loved ones including Pat Owen who His Royal Highness was reunited with today. He is a familiar face to many from his long-standing Presidency of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, for which he presented the winners’ trophies at Wimbledon for more than five decades. His Royal Highness served as Vice Chairman of the Overseas Trade Board, and later of British Trade International from 1976 to 2001. The Duke currently divides his time between engagements relating to his own Patronages, and work in support of The King and the wider Royal Family. The Duke of Kent is involved with over 140 different charities, organisations and professional bodies which cover a wide range of issues, from commemorating the war dead, to fostering the development of British technology and industry. His Royal Highness undertakes numerous engagements each year in support of these organisations, both in the UK and across the Commonwealth. He has been President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission since 1970, an organisation that commemorates Commonwealth servicemen and women who died in the two world wars, and cares for memorials at 23,000 locations in 154 countries. The Duke is also the patron of institutions focused on the area of medicine, rescue and social assistance such as RNLI, The Stroke association and St’s Mungo The Duke’s personal passion for music is reflected in his support for many musical organisations, from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera North, to the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, one of the UK’s leading music colleges, and to regional festivals such as those at Newbury and King’s Lynn. The Freemasons Hall opened its doors to non-masons in the outdoor living museum of Beamish, UK in 2006. The building was originally built in Sunderland with its foundation stone being laid in 1869 as a new Masonic Lodge. The Lodges are not seen as places of worship but their architecture is similar and they are often referred to as ‘Temples’. As with our churches the Freemason Lodges are also under threat due to low attendance numbers. At the opening procession of the building in the museum, masons attended from all over the country and a horse and carriage was driven along the Main Street containing the Grand Master himself HRH the Duke of Kent and the Provincial Grand Master of Durham Dr Alan Martin Davison. The building is decked out to represent the changing world of Freemasonry but mainly set in the Edwardian year of 1913. Our Deputy Colonel in Chief, HRH The Duke Of Kent, KG, wrote a similarly remarkable letter having served the Regiment from 1955, some 66 years ago, and commanding no3 Guard on the day of amalgamation. The senior Scottish regiment was amalgamated from The Royal Scots Greys and 3rd Carabiniers some 50 years ago today at Holyrood Park in Edinbugh under the watchful eye of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. The following year The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Pipes & Drums released “Amazing Grace” which went to number 1 in the UK charts! The 293 years of antecedent regimental history sees our Standard carry 44 of our 88 battle honours embroidered on it….. In the last 15 years alone, the Regiment has been deployed 9 times in war fighting, peacekeeping, peace enforcing and on op counter terrorism operations. A Royal Afternoon tea was on our menu this afternoon at the beautiful and truly stunning War graves in Brookwood. His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, visited the largest military cemetery in the UK today as part of the first ever War Graves Week. After his tour His Royal Highness, who has presided over CWGC for more than fifty years, was given a tour of the cemetery by Claire Horton CBE, the Commission’s Director General.
