Every year that I used to visit Kabul, I stepped into a world where books overflowed with stories and an ancient culture that thrived in every corner. My trips felt like a journey back in time, a place where history and heritage were woven into everyday life. I loved Afghanistan—the people, the traditions, the warmth that welcomed me home. But everything changed with the Fall of Kabul. The Afghanistan I remember isn’t the one we see today under the Taliban’s rule. I’m doing my best to keep our culture alive, to tell the world that our true identity is much richer than what it seems. But we need your help to keep our stories alive. Afghanistan today is a place where teenage girls can’t go to school, women can’t go to university, libraries have been closed to women, women can’t work or move freely, women can’t go to parks or choose what they wear. “If it wasn’t for my breakup, I wouldn’t have chased my dreams.” Zakaria 📸 Zak had been dating his girlfriend for a while and decided he wanted to marry her, but family circumstances made this difficult. He’s from Oman, and getting married has certain steps and rules you must follow. They weren’t from equal blood lines and Zak’s family didn’t give the approval necessary for them to proceed with the marriage. “I told her my family didn’t approve and that I didn’t think we could make it. At that point it was more of an idea - I didn’t realise how important this was for me. But after a while I realised the feelings I had for her were true love. I desperately wanted us to figure things out, but it was too late. “I was used to her existence in my life, but I had to find a new path. I started to think about my mistakes and what things I should do better. I considered my dreams. I made barriers between me and my family. This is my life and if I want to marry a girl I can, whatever I want to do I can. I made limits for myself. “Before the breakup I couldn’t take this step. I started working on myself more. I had a really tough period where I even reached out to her because I wanted closure. I tried to speak to her and see her, but she ignored me. This was my closure. After that, I changed my life. I realised travelling is the best thing in my life. I want to travel and meet a bunch of new people. This is what makes me happy. That isn’t the kind of life that she would live. I don’t think I would have done this if I stayed there. I can’t see myself going back home and living that life again. “Sometimes things get so bad we think it’ll never get better. Harrisonburg, VA: Sherry has worked at this cupcake bakery on more than one occasion: initially prior to Covid and recently on a more part time basis. Prior to Covid, Sherry worked at this bakery, with James Madison University cafeteria services and at Kohls. In one moment she had three jobs and with the outbreak of Covid all three of her incomes disappeared. Not an easy road, but she navigated her way through and made it to the other side. I guess that’s what it all boils down to in this life: navigating our way through and making it to the other side. I have been working with Georgia for a year now. A short while after we met, she was admitted to hospital. A 10th visit to intensive care, in just her 21st year. It was seven months before she returned home. “This time it was a spinal stroke, and this time – six years on – MELAS was finally identified. It is an extremely rare mitochondrial condition – which can occur at any age and often out of nowhere – affecting my cells’ ability to heal, putting my organs at risk, and creating a domino effect of ill-health. MELAS has only 30-years of research behind it, meaning the doctors are at a bit of a loss with me. But in the face of this darkness, I am trying to find those shards of light.” She is a beacon of light – as well as a wonderful vessel of dark humour – for more people than she perhaps knows. And I am certainly one of them. “I can use my story to help others. So, if further down the road someone is in my situation, they will know that there is a route through.” She has faced, – and continues to face – challenge at a depth that few will ever know. A Day to Remember ~ an experience from April 2019! An East Indian who was born in Karachi, Gerry—in his meek but enthusiastic voice—spoke his heart out to me. As a young kid, he migrated to India with his family post 1947. Reminiscing those times, he recalled how he joined National Cash Register, an American company which manufactured old cash registers. He worked there for more than forty years while the best part was that he had a functioning National Cash Register right there in front of my eyes—gifted to him by the company. That feeling of pressing those buttons—with old symbols of pounds and shillings and pence—and the way those numbers popped up, and the opening of the front box on pressing the buttons back to keep the cash was a surreal experience. How electronic savvy we have become instantly hit me when I used that mechanical device! When expressing a disbelief on how he stuck with only one company for so long, Gerry instantly replied that it was because he loved his job. He got to travel around the world, check the new devices, get trained, and come back and train people at his Churchgate office. How sitting in the front rows of single theaters costed only 65 paise then and the child-like excitement with which he spoke such things to me—at that age of more than 80 years—kept me unmoved. We were about to wrap—even though I could have spoken with him for many more hours—when he says that he has a small thing for me. Numb I was for 10 seconds, when he gifted me the original Times of India copy of August 15th, 1947. With an immense sense of gratitude, I was about to depart when he tells that he wants me to meet two of his pets. Afraid of the dogs since childhood, I was a bit reluctant but I proceeded. From one of the corners of this beautiful more-than-100-year-old bungalow, he showed me two barn owls—rested at peace—just at a distance of two metres. The Malecón is one of the most iconic and vibrant places in Havana, Cuba. Officially known as Avenida de Maceo, this long boulevard stretches about 8 kilometers along the city's north coast, from Castillo de la Punta in the east to the entrance of the Almendares River in the west. The Malecón was constructed in several stages, starting in 1901, with the purpose of protecting Havana from the harshness of the sea. However, over time, it has become much more than just a barrier against the waves: it is a social and cultural meeting point for city residents and tourists. The avenue is famous for its diverse architecture, which includes everything from colonial buildings to examples of art deco and modernism. Along the Malecón, you can find numerous important monuments, such as the Monument to the Victims of the USS Maine. Love over Revenge: Mama Rose There’s a history particular to every country, state, community etc For Rwanda, its the dreadful genocide that happened on the Tutsi tribe in the country. 30 years gone, things seems to have moved on with people returning and trying to get their lives going irrespective of the lingering past. One of such people is Mama Rose—A receptionist at Oasis Apartment in Kigali. Once she is on duty, she sees to it that you are comfortable, your questions answered with possible solutions at her disposal and all with a warm smile. I wanted to know her story. “Before the genocide, some Tutsis were arrested and from there were taken to prison, after which they were killed in 1993. My husband was one of them. We were only married for 4 years with two kids–a boy and a girl. It was a matter of life and death and I had to escape because they came to my house twice already so I fled to France. Even at that, while at the airport I was kept for three hours because they were deciding on whether to let me go but thank God they did. I was 24 then. In 2007, 14 years after the genocide, the incident that took my husband away from me, I remarried my present husband in France. It’s not been easy. Years later, some people have said they want revenge, while others who want to remarry have had to use parents who are not theirs to represent them. I lost a lot of my people; the most painful loss was my husband.
