Despite the stormy weather, we still had two small groups of volunteers out over the weekend helping at two of our favourite reserves โ๏ธ On Saturday, we visited @wildacresnaturereserve to help dig phase one of a sediment trap pond. There is sediment runoff from the agricultural land right next to the reserve, and this pond will help protect the other 35. Volunteers also tended to the 500 oak saplings in their tree nursery. All before retiring to the barn for a cuppa and a biscuit and leaving the rain to the frogs ๐ธ On Sunday, there was more tree nursery work at Wild Eala near Blessington Lakes. Istvan led the group to build more raised beds and transplant some seedlings. A small section of remaining hedgerow trees was also planted ๐ฑ This Saturday we return to our own tree nursery at Jacksmill near Newtownmountkennedy to tend to our seedlings and continue building and preparing the nursery for the next phase. The Hedgerows are springing into life and the edibles are beginning to flower.๐ธ๐ธ Sloe , otherwise known as blackthorn is one of the first; and its frothy white blossom is unmissable across the countryside. Sloe Gin and Jelly are the best, made in the autumn when the berries are ready.๐ซ๐ซ Wild raspberries are delicious ; small but with great flavour, best enjoyed on a walk or as a topping to meringues. ๐๐ Nettles are the ultimate super food , high in many nourishing vitamins, having a bowl of homemade soup regularly in the spring when the tips are young will keep the bugs at bay. ๐ฟ๐ฟ Elder with its amazingly scented flowers in May and June will create a beautiful Cordial for the summer, and if you are adventurous a lightly sparkling prosecco! Black thorn (slow berry), and white thorn (red hawthorn berry) I have been walking with friends recently confused about the tree thatโs in flower at the moment so I thought I would do a post on it! The one in the hedge in flower first is blackthorn. Easily mistaken with hawthorn but there are a few tell tale signs to help you tell them apart. Pics 1 & 2- Blackthorn is one of the first flowers of spring so it starts in March usually. The flowers come before itโs leaves and when it fruits in autumn, you will see little plumb like fruits called sloe berries (super astringent but excellent for flavouring things) and they look like plumbs as itโs in the plumb family! Pic 3 & 4 Hawthorn is known as the may flower as it flowers in (you guessed it!) May! The green foliage can start to be seen around now on some trees. The berries will come in early autumn and are red and look like mini apples as itโs in the apple family! @hedgerowsireland has shared an open letter and urgently needs signatures to help fight the spread of fireblight in Ireland. Hedgerows Ireland shares that "Fireblight is a bacterial disease whose common hosts include Hawthorn, Cotoneaster, apple, pear, and rowan. It cannot be treated, and affected trees must be destroyed. Symptoms include the withering of shoots and leaves (โShepherdโs Stickโ), cankers, and bacterial ooze. Fireblight is known to enter through latent infections on imported plants. It is suited to our temperate climate, widespread in Northern Ireland and confirmed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in 17 outbreaks across 11 counties in 2023. It previously caused the removal of over 800km of hedgerows in Germany." Our volunteers were out celebrating green this weekend by partnering with @delganytidytowns and the residents of Thorndale estate to plant 250 native trees to create a new hedgerow ๐ The estate is located just 1km from the ancient Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve and already has evidence of foxes, hedgehogs and lots of birds ๐ฆ This weekend, as tree planting season draws to a close, we have a bumper two days with our volunteers helping at the Tree Festival in Belmont Demesne on Saturday, oak tree planting with Native Woodland Trust on Sunday and tree planting on both days with the NPWS rangers at Glenasmole Valley. Thank you to forester Eoin Donnelly the.woodwright and Aster Farm @thewiic_atasterfarm for welcoming 14 of our volunteers along on Saturday for hazel coppicing and hedgerow laying! First they visited the Tomcoyle Woodlands on site and planted some hazel in the coppice restoration area with fifth generation forester Eoin Donnelly. This work will likely take 15 years to help restore this ancient area of hazel coppice. Then it was on to laying a new hedgerow and the team planted over 700 saplings of hawthorn, hazel, rowan, birch, alder, geulder rose and crab apple. It was a beautiful day with beautiful scenery for our visit to An รige Youth Hostel's Knockree reserve near Enniskerry on Sunday. 22 of our volunteers helped throughout the day to plant and fence two new sections of hedgerow, weed the tree nursery and plant out some bigger trees in guards. To keep the hedgerow area maintenance free, a good bit of ground preparation was done, by removing all the rhizomes of the bracken, roots of couch grass and brambles. Then cardboard was laid onto the ground and finally bark mulch spread around the hedging plants. All under the watchful eye of horticulturist Istvan! The volunteers then enjoyed an outdoor lunch and were treated to the arrival of a special visitor ๐ฆ As the tree planting season will soon be over, we're preparing for a big weekend of activities on the 23rd and 24th March, planting trees at Glenasmole Valley, the Native Woodland Trust Laragh Reserve and helping at the 80Max Belmont Tree Festival. The snow couldn't stop another busy weekend of tree planting in Wicklow. Our volunteers were back at the new @microwildhq project near Blessington to plant over 1,400 saplings to form a new 250 metre hedgerow! Some of these trees came from the proceeds of our tree gift certificates at Christmas, one of several tree planting projects to be funded from it this spring. After the work was done, Brian took the volunteers on a fun and educational tour of his new reserve for invertebrates ๐๐ท On Saturday our chairperson Danny also visited the Roundwood Community Preschool on behalf of ReWild Wicklow and gifted them one of our rowan trees as a thank you for choosing us as the beneficiary of their raffle which raised โฌ500! Our volunteers have been out over the past two weekends in wet weather clearing invasive bramble on the pedestrian boardwalks within the @birdwatchireland East Coast Nature Reserve. We also helped with clearing scrub in some of the waterway dykes near the hides and picnic tables. This work allows water flow more freely through the reserve, curtailing excess flooding and encourages biodiversity along the waterways. It also gives the public more visiblity of the diverse habitats and wildlife within the reserve. And crucially all hedgerow and scrub habitats had to be cut before today's 1st March deadline for the bird breeding season! ๐ฆ๐ฆข From now until the end of March we have tree and hedgerow planting every weekend and every Thursday we'll be sending a smaller crew to help the @wicklowmountainsnp rangers plant trees in the Glenasmole Valley restoration project. March 1st is drawing near and the natural world begins to stir from its winter slumber, it's time to turn our attention to the care and maintenance of our hedgerows. These green arteries wind through our countryside, they provide essential habitats for wildlife, act as natural windbreaks, and offer vital corridors for biodiversity, the also act as protection to farmland and livestock, and to gardens. In Ireland there are laws and regulations (Section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976 as amended by the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000 and the Heritage Act 2018) in place to protect hedgerows and the wildlife they support. Hedgerow cutting is prohibited: from March 1st to August 31st. This is a critical time for nesting and resting birds and other wildlife, and disturbing hedgerows during this period can have effects on their survival. There is also a good case for practicing good stewardship of hedgerows all year-round. Responsible hedgerow management involves periodic trimming to maintain their health and shape, but it should be done with care and consideration for the surrounding ecosystem. Rather than indiscriminate cutting, it's important to assess each hedgerow individually, taking into account factors such as wildlife habitats, nesting seasons, and the overall biodiversity of the area. As the days grow longer and the hedgerows burst into leaf, let's take a moment to appreciate these natural wonders. Let's work together to ensure that our hedgerows remain vibrant havens of life, beauty, and biodiversity. Thank you to the 40 volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to join us at ReWild Wicklow HQ in @jacksmill_hub13 ! The main task of the day was sowing 30 bags of collected holly, hawthorn, alder, birch and guelder rose seeds into trays, all under the watchful eye of our horticulturist Istvan. Whilst carpenter Simon oversaw the construction of several raised units to hold the trays ๐ฑ Next we prepared a small patch of the nursery with wildflower seed, as we want to showcase all types of nature restoration here. And finally we helped Caroline and Huw of Jacksmill clear the grass and weeds from around the hundreds of native hedgerow trees we helped plant along the allotments over the past two years ๐ธ๐ณ We'll be returning to our tree nursery every couple of months to continue growing this base we hope will supply trees all across the National Park in years to come. A big volunteer crew from ReWild Wicklow, Wicklow Tidy Towns and Wicklow Town Team planted a new native hedgerow along the beautiful Leitrim River in Wicklow Town on Saturday. All the trees were sponsored by people who bought gift certs from ReWild Wicklow last Christmas and include a mix of hawthorn, alder, willow, rowan, blackthorn, hazel, crab apple, spindle and guelder rose. We hope they'll grow into a thick hedgerow that will provide food and shelter for the abundant birds and wildlife in this area but also help protect the riverbank and walk from erosion. Thank you to the over 30 volunteers who helped plant 150 trees and also to the local Wicklow Municipal District for facilitating and advising on the project. Bare-root trees & hedging, have you planted yours? Here are our top tips; ๐ณ Ensure the roots have moisture until you're ready to plant them. Put them in a bucket of water, or heel them into damp sand or soil until you're ready to plant. ๐ณ Plant the bare-root whips by the end of March, before the plants break dormancy. ๐ณSoak the bare-root plants in a bucket of water for up to one hour before sowing. It's that time of year again - bareroot season. This is our third winter planting trees and hedgerows around the place, but this year we have a new supervisor keeping an eye on things. Thankfully it's not too stressful as she's been known to sleep on the job! This year we're topping up hedges with hawthorn and hornbeam, and dotting in the odd pine around the house. A different day out today - The All-Ireland Hedge Laying Championships at Millbank Farm, Killinchy. Hedgerows Ireland are trying to bring back historical methods of making hedges denser and less open at the base. This ensures theyโre both stock proof and also become a secure home for a huge variety of wildlife with corridors from field to field ๐๐ฆก๐ฟ๏ธ๐ฆ๐ To make it even more environmentally friendly they were using donkeys to carry the excess branches away ๐๐ซ๐ซ We watched them hacking the stems to leave a tiny tongue at one end which allows the trunk to be bent nearly to ground level. Hazel stakes are then hammered in to stabilise it but unfortunately we didnโt get to see the binding at the top with willow branches to finish it off neatly. That colour really brightened up this rainy day!! Itโs literally liquid gold. There are very few things that give me more joy than preserving Natureโs fabulous wild treasures. Todayโs batch was crab apple, quince, hawthorn and rosehip with vanilla!! If I may say so myself, itโs just divine!! The whole process incorporates so many mindfulness and nature connection elements. If you have been thinking about trying out foraging or wild foods, then autumn is the perfect time to give it a go. Even though most of the harvest is done, there are still so many treasures to be found. Our hedgerows are brimming with hawthorn, rosehip and blackberries still. Crabapples are abundant and the perfect ingredient to prepare hedgerow jelly due to their high pectin content. To prepare the jelly just take 1kg of berries and 1 kg of chopped crabapples and cover with water. Boil until apples are soft and strain juice through a cloth over night. Add 1:1 sugar and a little bit of lemon juice or citric acid and boil until jelling point is reached (repeatedly test on a small cold plate until you can see it set). Add some spices such as cinnamon, vanilla or star anise if you like. Fill hot into sterilised jars and close immediately. Well early Saturday morning myself, Paige and truffle set off at 8am to pickโฆ. I mean โforageโโgotta sound cool โฆ. Berries from the fields.. it was now or never before the next bands of rain came and we wouldnโt get the blackberriesโฆ.. mission hedgerow jelly beganโฆโฆ it was a lovely morning and we trucked on filling our bowls, stopping off at the crab apple tree to complete the haulโฆ.. Ended up with rose hips, hawthorn, elderberries, blackberries, and raspberries from the gardenโฆ sat down with a cuppa and we set about cleaning them off and that brings us to the first picโฆ. Weighed in at 1500g of fruit, to which we added 1500g chopped and washed crab apples, throw them into the pot with just enough water to nearly cover them โฆ Bring to the boil and simmer for about 20/30 minutes or until the fruit is mushy. Set a jam bag or muslin over a large glass bowl, ensuring the bag is not sitting in the contents of the bowl. Once most of the juice has drained out, suspend the jelly bag or tied muslin cloth above the bowl and allow it to drip overnight. Never be tempted to squeeze the bag or your jelly will end up cloudy. Then next day sterilise your jars and discard the leftover pulp. Measure out the juice and for every 600ml (1 pint) add 450g sugar. We ended up with nearly 2500ml of juice. In a large pan, heat the mixture gently until the sugar has dissolved. Then bring it to the boil. Remove any scum as it cooks. Continue to boil until the jelly reaches setting point. 104-106c or test setting point, place a tsp of juice onto a cold saucer push it with a teaspoon or your finger. If it wrinkles it's set. Turn the heat off and leave a couple of minutes for the bubbles to subside. Pour into the hot sterilised jars. Cover with wax discs, and be very proud of yourself!!
