A bright and furry flower now emerging in the formal glasshouse is lion’s ear (Leonotis sp.). Leonotis is a genus composed of 9 species native to large portions of Africa, as well as India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The word Leonotis is a product of two Greek words, “leon” meaning lion and “otis” meaning ear, hence the common name. This as well as related common names like lion’s paw all reference the orange colored flowers that are covered in small, soft hairs. Coupled with their whorled arrangement around the stem, this can resemble a lion’s tail, ear, or paw, depending on who you ask. Whatever you chose to call it, Leonotis is a striking and unique perennial. It thrives best in warmer climates and is tolerant of harsh temperatures and dry soils. As such, it’s treated as an indoor plant here at Oak Spring. There is a laundry list of medicinal uses associated with lion’s ear, which has been used by traditional healers to treat ailments like headaches, muscular cramps, eczema, and skin rashes. In some cases the leaves and flowers are harvested and applied topically and in other cases the plant parts are dried and smoked. Bridgewater 2023 over and out. A few pics from the last couple weeks. ▪︎The Aeonium 'Velour' is going to flower in January so deffo worth coming to check that out. The Leonotis leonurus doing its thing 😍 ▪︎The Edibles glasshouse filling out nicely with plenty of produce for the cafe. It will also soon smell delightful with the Hyacinths coming along nicely. ▪︎The seedlings for next year's project are starting to germinate with the Aeonium tabuliforme in the picture but also the dragon fruit, Watsonia 'Tresco Hybrid' and Agarves all doing something. ▪︎We made some habitat piles last week with wood from site. An excellent picture from George of me teaching the apprentices vine pruining. A couple pics from the walled garden while we set up glow for the last time. ▪︎And finally some beautiful blossom in flower sped up by the glow lights pointed at it for nearly two months. Beautiful to see but completely the wrong time of year. Now you've seen it you'll notice it in lots of places where lights on at night effect the plants. Leonotis leonurus or Lion’s Tail. This South African native is looking spectacular at this time of year! They are evergreen in our garden and the rather plain green foliage produces gorgeous tiers of furry vivid orange or white flowers during Summer. I give mine a light prune in late Summer to deadhead after the first flush of flowers. This rewards me with another flush of flowers into Autumn. In late Winter I cut them back by about half to keep them nice and dense. They can be weedy in some areas so check before you purchase. A natureza é perfeita na apresentação de flores que encontramos no caminho. Está espécie é a Leonotis leonurus. Conhecida também como cordão de frade, orelha de leão em alguns locais em sua origem. Nativa da África. Uma planta herbacea com caules eretos e cilindricos. Folhas opostas em forma de lanças finas. Forma um tipo de arbusto que pode atingir até 1,50 m de altura. Floresce no verão. Sua apresentação das flores bem diferente. Forma um globo nos anéis dos caules na parte alta do caule. Normalmente 3 globos que desabrocham com flores tubulares finas nas cores alaranjadas e avermelhadas. Duram cerca de 10 a 15 dias. Um espetáculo. Cultivo em sol pleno ou meia sombra e regas moderadas. Não gosta de solo muito úmido.
