Understanding trauma⬇️ It’s hard to dive deeper into anything that has ever caused you harm, at the time it’s the only way to let go. My biggest flaw is not being able to correctly voice how I feel. But I comprise by doing it differently. I try my best to articulate that in writing, in any form. I’ve found myself coming back to this I wrote a while back so I thought I’d share it. It doesn’t perfectly place meaning on why, But in its own funny way puts it into perspective. It took a lot of therapy sessions, hours of writing to finally reach a level of acceptance with the things that happened. And that’s just what works for me. Keeping trying and exploring options until you find something rightly fitting to your healing journey. I’m no where near understanding my past and everything that haunts me but I am comfortable in where I’m at. In some ways my world did end at many points but not entirely, Just the world as I knew it come to an end. Early detection of cervical cancer can be treated. This is why campaigns are ongoing for regular testing or screening in two ways 1. VIA ~ Visual inspection of the cervix with Acetic Acid, to determine if any abnormal cells are present in the cervix. 2. Carcinoid cancer is one that is hard to detect early on. Symptoms usually occur at a later time in the disease. The symptoms can also be quite vague and is dependent on the location of the carcinoid tumor. Signs to look out for carcinoid tumors in the lungs include chest pain, wheezing, shortness of breath, diarrhea, skin flushing, weight gain around the midsection & upper back, and pink or purple stretch marks. Symptoms for carcinoid tumors in the digestive tract include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bowel obstruction, rectal bleeding/pain, and skin flushing. People who are older, are female, or have a family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) are also at higher risk of developing carcinoid cancer. Today is National Lung Cancer Screening Day 🤍 Did you know that lung cancer is the number one most common cancer here on Guam? There are many ways we could lower our risk for lung cancer, including not smoking, eating healthy, keeping a healthy weight, using personal protective equipment as needed, and reducing your exposure to radon. Unfortunately, here on Guam we do have higher levels of radon which is linked to our unique geology. Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs from the natural breakdown of uranium. It has no color, smell, or taste and is present all around us. Guam's radon measurements within indoor air are found to be higher than the measurements in air deemed to be safe. 🔬 Let’s Talk Cancer is a full-day event geared towards high-school students to provide insight on the current field of cancer research, offered through a collaboration with the Montreal chapter of the Research Information Outreach Team @riotdesirmtl and Let’s Talk Science at McGill University @lts_mcgill The goal is to provide a background on what is cancer, while offering various perspectives in the field from professionals including clinicians, scientists, geneticists, and cancer survivors. The 2023 instalment of the event was offered here at the GCI and featured educational presentations, a keynote address, laboratory tours, interactive activities, and a cancer research panel. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this fantastic day possible! L'édition 2023 de l'événement a eu lieu ici à l'ICG et comprenait des présentations éducatives, un discours d'ouverture, des visites de laboratoires, des activités interactives et un groupe de discussion sur la recherche sur le cancer. Let’s talk Breast cancer - not a pretty subject not pink not fluffy. Thankfully 9 years ago I found a lump. Thankfully is an odd way to start the sentence but if I hadn’t found it I probably would not be here today. I had bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using a sling and repositioning muscles to support the implants as all breast tissue was removed. No idea what muscles were moved ( medical family/friends feel free to name them) but it meant my breast moved when I changed gears in the car, cutting bread weee amongst some of the tasks that I had to get used to the odd sensations and unexpected movements. They don’t tell you that cancer changes you as a person. They don’t tell you about the fear of reoccurrence that walks in front of you sometimes small you don’t notice it sometimes so big you can’t see round it. They don’t tell you about the unexpected movements in your reconstructed breasts. They don’t tell you the mind fog that is created by tamoxifen and the bone pain, the weight gain. They don’t tell you that when you have a persistent cough you ‘pull’ the muscles supporting your implants and causing excruciating pain when you cough, sit, stand, turn over in bed or reach up for something. This is something I have learnt this week, I am trying to find the humorous side of the situation, how funny must I look grabbing at myself as I start to cough to try to ease the pain I know is about to start? We don’t talk enough about cancer and the ongoing impact it can have. I am talking and over sharing just in case someone is experiencing something similar with no idea what the pain is, it took me a few days to work it out. A few days where fear took over and ‘what ifs’ started. #breastcancer #LetsTalkCancer #flu
