Bronwen Sleigh ~ Printfest Printmaker of the Year 2024 Each year Printfest select a major UK printmaker to be Printmaker of the Year. The Printmaker of the Year completes a residency in the South Lakes area that gives them the opportunity to enjoy the environment, time and space to develop their practice and create work that is inspired by the local area and people, and to produce a commissioned print that will become part of the Printfest Print Collection. They become a guest judge on the Selection Panel to support the process of selecting 42 artists from the 65-75 applications we receive each year. They give a presentation at the Opening Talk about their work and practice. Bronwen Sleigh is a visual artist who works in printmaking, drawing and sculpture, taking inspiration from manmade structures set within a wide variety of landscapes. Sleigh’s work asks questions about the built environment. Through drawing, she investigates attitudes to space as expressed through architecture and its relationship to the landscape. Process is integral to her practice - her drawings and sculptures inform each other, moving from 2D to 3D and back again. The labour intensive multiple processes of making bring abstraction to the original subject. The Cranfield Awards x 2 @cranfieldcolours £150 1st Prize & £100 2nd Prize value of printmaking inks ~ With colour in the blood Cranfield have been manufacturing printmaking inks, for three generations. Their oil based ‘Caligo’ inks (that wash with soap & water) contributed to the nontoxic revival of printmaking in the 1990’s. Have you ever sat on a roof with anyone? Six years ago I had this idea for a print inspired by a few roofs I’ve sat on with friends over the years and I drew these two people sat on the roof of a house and made a large print block of them set against a sky of shooting stars, it took me several days to cut the block and when it was printed and finished such was my disappointment that I put the whole thing in the bin without showing anyone. Anyway I never gave up on them and I now think I have the answer! Woodland Walk - this is an old favourite, out of the print drawer today to scan... I carved this one a while ago and had a long list of essential things to be included in the image written for me by a child. Dusty and Peggy seem to have been drying out for weeks. Maybe it's the strange vintage paper I've been using. Who knows. Anyway, if my silly (wonderful) friend @sarah.reid.redrawstudios and I were, as if by magic, turned into plants, Sarah would be Dusty (messy hands and pastel dust) and I'd have to be Peggy due to my large collection of print drying washing lines and clothes pegs as my fancy drying racks fill up way too quickly. Poor old Dusty has almost been reduced to dust, and if anything untoward happens to Sarah, I will feel hideously responsible. But eldest daughter came back for a visit and did LOTS of plant care. Dusty has been repotted and is somewhere more obvious now in the hope that she's less neglected. @bluebellroebuck will have some of my 'plants with names' at @westhoveartstrail for Open Houses starting in May. Printmakers’ Printmaker 2023 ~ Sally Adkins. Over the Printfest weekend each year, we ask the exhibiting artists to nominate their favourite printmaker. That artist becomes our Printmakers’ Printmaker, an accolade which is particularly meaningful to artists as it reflects recognition by their peers. They are awarded a free stand for the following year. Sally Adkins is an artist printmaker based within walking distance of the River Derwent, on the edge of the Peak District in Derbyshire. A multi-disciplinary printmaker, she works predominantly in the age-old tradition of acid-based etching, harnessing established techniques to develop finely etched, expressive metal plates. She also specialises in monotypes and contemporary interventions in print. Her practice is focussed on the movement of river water as it journeys; through extensive walks and exploration, she draws in response to place and then expresses this dialogue with the river and landscape of the Peaks in print. Sally will be providing this years opening talk on the Thursday evening with Bronwen Sleigh. I’ve been in the studio today, printing up a batch of ombré mackerel prints on handmade Lotka paper. I’ve been meaning to give this a go for ages and the upcoming #supersecondsfestival is a great excuse to try a few new things. They actually came out really well, but there are definitely 2 or 3 destined for my upcoming sale as inking an ombré can sometimes be a bit tricky.

I'm full on Urf today after a stressful day with my sweet Ponyo yesterday. Update as follows: Ponyo had an eye removed after a nasty infection (?) serious swelling that wouldn't respond to eye drops. She came home yesterday afternoon, had a video call with eldest and middle daughters, ate several blueberries and some spinach. Fingers crossed she recovers swiftly and plays the part of a pirate-ish one eyed piggy well. Welcoming Debby Akam back to Printfest 2024. New monoprints investigate layered space through colour relationships and gestural marks that result in representations of stilled- action or vitality. They suggest the possibility of colour being a language in itself, a correlative for emotions: pointing to meanings without illustrating them. I’m currently working between printmaking and larger works on canvas. Checking for any pinholes before I start screenprinting a new small oval print. I used to print a lot of ovals, they were quite big if anyone remembers my older work? The process of working with a publisher on my book Trees in Winter (out October 2024) has been fascinating. I thought I’d share a series of posts on how it all developed, and how it has all been so much better than I expected. It started with a message on Instagram from Cath Burke, deputy managing director of Little, Brown. I get regular messages asking me if I want to promote products or get involved in exhibitions in foreign galleries, most of which I just delete as I suspect many are scams, and I really thought this one might be too. I convinced myself the wording seemed slightly odd and I hadn’t published books before. I looked at Cath’s profile and compared it with the Little, Brown website. It looked like the same person, and Little, Brown was a reputable publisher, but that wasn’t proof the message was legit. I talked to a novelist friend and she said she had never heard of anyone being contacted by a publisher. I thought about it for a few hours and decided I would reply, as you never know. I could equally have decided not to reply. I received no response, but it was the weekend. The following week the idea of a book had lodged in my brain and become so enticing I went back to the Instagram message and replied to that, just in case the email had gone astray. It had! It had gone straight into Cath’s spam folder. She replied, explaining she had published two books with printmaker and book illustrator Angela Harding, and was thinking of something similar, but we should discuss it. We set up a videocall. ✷ EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT ✷ In just under three weeks I’ll be setting up a solo exhibition in a lovely new community gallery in Archway @the_gallery_at_the_playroom_ from the 13th-19th of May. The exhibition will be a celebration of nature showcasing my lino prints and personal dried flower displays with a vintage twist. Welcoming Ruth Ander back to Printfest 2024. After completing her Illustration degree, Ruth has continued to hone her unique mono-print technique. Her pictures are delicate, translucent drifts of colour on fine tissue paper and traditional hand-made Japanese paper. Recent work combines etching, collage and mono-print and strives to convey her love of the English land and sea scape. The results are a cross between a Japanese woodblock print, an Italian fresco and English landscape painting. She exhibits widely in both group and solo shows. The Chris Benefield Memorial Award £200 cash ~ Through inspiration from Chris, upstairs at the Tinners’ Rabbit Fine Art Gallery in Ulverston, local artists gathered to talk about their dreams, beliefs and philosophy; This is where Printfest was born, the dream of Judy Evans & Ronkey Bullard, to set up a festival for printmakers.
