This years theme is ‘start in the wrong place’; there are so many Discworld books about so many things, and as much as I love recommending the reading guide, I also love recommending my favourites— Night Watch, Small Gods, Monstrous Regiment. #AllSystemsRed by Martha Wells #murderbotdiaries No 1 🦾🦾🦾 This #Novella - the first in a #sciencefiction series - is about a self-aware #android called #murderbot and its adventures as it acts as security for a group of adventurers (possibly they were scientists) I read this for #londonacebookclub because apparently it has #acerep (think #murderbot is technically #aroace) It's absolutely fine - it's a quick and easy read. But, it has definite shades of the #wayfarers series by Becky Chambers. A seemingly random bunch of people brought together by some sort of adversity - though that's probably just #scyfy to be fair. So I do feel I have read something similar before. I am not massively interested in continuing the series. Then again I did once say that about #Discworld (I can quit anytime, I swear). It is the story of a fraudster who was given a second chance (after he was officially hanged) and was tasked with getting the Ankh-Morpork post office back on its feet. Terry Pratchett presents the invention of stamps and the emergence of stamp collectors in a humorous way. Discworld Emporium - the Discworld merchandising store blessed by Sir Terry himself, designed and printed these Morporkian stamps, described in the novel. As a philatelist, I must admit that the artists really did their homework, creating truly noble parodies of real stamps from the classic period. The first stamp in the history of the Disc with the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, Lord Vetinari (the most enlightened tyrant in the history of the multiverse) is an obvious tribute to Penny Black. When I read this book for the first time, before I started collecting stamps myself, I missed a lot of philatelic jokes and allusions. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 to Jingo by Terry Pratchett. And we're back not only with another discworld read, back with the surly Commander Vimes and the Watch crew. Rereading this now you can tell this is the book where the discworld changed. The previous three Watch novels all had crime thriller elements to them, but in this Pratchett expands the lens of the story beyond the city of Ankh-Morpork to tell a story about two countries on the brink of war for reasons. With his usual brilliant flair Pratchett communicates how quickly people can turn to hate with two characters debating the difference between the warring factions. It turns out there aren't any, but that is going to stop the stupid from a fight. This is perfect story for Pratchett's character Samual Vimes, Commander of the Watch. Vimes is a commoner, someone's whose become a gentleman through marriage and discovers himself rubbing shoulders with the select few who decide the laws and rules. He is constantly rubbed up the wrong way, knowing the consequences of their actions. Having him on the sidelines commenting on the decisions of these individuals who all wish to wage war with no ideal of the consequences of such. It's hilarious, but also sad because you can see this type of behaviour in politics today. Jingo is my favourite Watch book so far. It's scope has never been bigger, the characters have never shined so much and Pratchett has never written so engagingly before. You can tell that behind every joke and gag there's a level of anger. Like Vimes he's appalled by the behaviour of those in charge, those that make the rules and break them when it suits. It’s Terry Pratchett’s birthday! We’ve been working on getting the Discworld books for a while now, and are gradually adding to our collection. My husband was already a huge fan of Pratchett when we started dating, and was the one that nagged me into picking up ‘Good Omens’ and then ‘Small Gods’ to get me into it. He used to read ‘Where’s My Cow?’ to our daughter when she was little, so this feels a bit nostalgic to me. Q. Terry Pratchett Day 🦇 It has been exactly 12 days since I last spoke about Terry Pratchett on this bookstagram page. And as today is Terry Pratchett Day, the day that marks his birthday, I am going to start talking about him again 🦇 In case you are very new to this bookstagram page, I adore Terry Pratchett and before he died in 2015, he was my favourite living author. If you've never heard of him, he's a fantasy author most famous for his Discworld series of novels, of which there are many wonderful books 🦇 But for this Terry Pratchett day, I thought I would share some of his books of this that are not part of the Discworld series, because there's a lot of those too, although they don't get as much attention. So, from top to bottom, the pile is as follows: 🦇 Strata - a sci fi novel that pre-dates The Discworld series 🦇 The Carpet People - Pratchett's first ever published novel 🦇 Truckers, Diggers, and Wings - the three books that make up Pratchett's Nome trilogy, also known as the Bromeliad Trilogy or just The Bromeliad 🦇 Dodger - a YA novel from 2012 that's based on the Dickens character of the Artful Dodger, set in Victorian London Johnny and the Bomb and Johnny and the Dead - two children's books following Johnny Maxwell. Johnny and the Bomb was actually the first ever Pratchett book I ever read, before I read any Discworld novels, as there was a children's tv adaptation of it in 2004 and I read the book shortly after 🦇 A Blink of the Screen - a collection of Pratchett's short stories and shorter fiction (this does include some Discworld stories, but a lot of non Discworld stories too) that I really want to get to this year 🦇 Of this list, I've only actually read the two Johnny Maxwell books, but I do want to get to the others at some point in the future 🦇 So happy birthday Terry Pratchett and happy Terry Pratchett Day to all those who love this wonderful fantasy author and everything he created 🦇 #terrypratchett #terrypratchettday #fantasy #Discworld

I was (blissfully?) unaware of Terry Pratchett Day 🧙♂️ I had most likely heard of it in passing, but never really took enough notice to remember it 🤔 But when I saw that the theme for Terry Pratchett Day 2024 was "Start at the Wrong Place", I instantly thought: "WELL. How about the wrong place IN TIME?" 🙃 Let me explain 😀 I remember watching "The Colour of Magic" movie many years ago, liking it... and then sort of forgetting about it 😅 For some reason, I never picked up a Discworld book, or anything else by Sir Pratchett (other than "Good Omens" by Pratchett and Gaiman) 📚 A while later, after meeting my partner, I saw this 1998 edition of "The Colour of Magic" on his shelf and decided to pick it up. I loved - and still do adore, the work of Terry Pratchett. I'm grateful to have found The Discworld as a young student and seen that world grow and our own world satirised so cleverly. Pratchett was wise and funny, his characters grew and changed over time, as did the subjects he took aim at. He guaranteed you laughs, often taught you something, and sometimes moved you unexpectedly. He also loved books, coffee, and cats - enough said 😁 If you've never read his books, I'd really recommend taking a look because there are so many strands and subjects to hook you in. And that's an invitation I can't decline ☺️ My favorite #Discworld character is Granny Weatherwax. I think the best way to explain why Granny is my favorite is by quoting "Wintersmith": "Granny Weatherwax wasn't popular with anyone much - except when they needed her. When Death was standing by the cradle or the axe slipped in the woods and blood was soaking into the moss, you sent someone hurrying to the cold, gnarly little cottage in the clearing. When all hope was gone, you called for Granny Weatherwax, because she was the best. And she always came. Always. But popular? No. Need is not the same as like. Granny Weatherwax was for when things were serious." But don't let it fool you, with Terry, "serious" is far from the opposite of "funny". My favorite Discworld novel is "Small Gods". "Small Gods" in one line: "Humans! They lived in a world where the grass continued to be green and the sun rose every day and flowers regularly turned into fruit, and what impressed them? Weeping statues. And wine made out of water!" I would recommend newcomers to Discworld to start with "Equal rites" or "Guards! Guards!", for they introduce Granny Weatherwax and Sam Vimes, who's my second favorite character. "Equal rites" in one line: "Unseen University had never admitted women, muttering something about problems with the plumbing, but the real reason was an unspoken dread that if women were allowed to mess around with magic they would probably be embarrassingly good at it...". "Guards! Guards!" In one line: "They accept evil not because they say yes, but because they don't say no." #TerryPratchett will rock your world, he certainly did mine, for a vital ingredient of success is not knowing that what you're attempting can't be done; it doesn't stop being magic just because you know how it works and no one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away. I do a puzzle every spring. In honor of Terry Pratchett Day (it would have been his 76th birthday), I present my recommended Discworld reading order: First, Discworld isn't one series but several (~8) set in the same world and I've heard people say that it doesn't matter which series you pick up first depending on your interests. I slightly disagree. I recommend getting introduced into the world with the first or even first two books of Rincewind (The Color of Magic & The Light Fantastic), then you can decide to stick with Rincewind, if you are enjoying the wizards, or dive into another series. The sub-series, in 10 words or less: * Rincewind: wizards, academia * Witches: double, double, toil and trouble and laughs * (City) Watch: satirical commentary on social justice * Industrial Revolution: satirical commentary on the world at large * Death (my personal favorite): The grim reaper trying to figure out the human race * Ancient Civilizations: religion and myths * Tiffany Aching: pre-teen/YA series, witch-in-training * Science: (not exactly a sub-series) about Discworld and how things "work" #bookstagrammer #bookworm #discworld #readingorder #terrypratchett
