Have you heard this acronym for fear? Not all fear is false. Fear is an important human emotion controlled by the part of our brain that mediates memory and emotion. Fear was designed to help protect us from danger. But people can develop unhealthy fear habits. When someone feels unsafe for long periods of time, they can become hypervigilant, always on the lookout for danger, even where there is no logical reason to be afraid. The brain thinks it’s helping, but it long ago lost the ability to regulate itself and is stuck in an unhealthy pattern. I am a hypervigilant. I also have a powerful imagination. The latter has served me well as a novelist, but my imagination coupled with fear has never been a friend. As I navigated socially awkward situations, I relied on my imagination and fear to help me interpret faces, then I made up stories I was certain were true. “I saw the look on his face,” I’d tell my husband. “He’s mad and me.” “Why would he be mad?” “Probably because I said such and such.” And I believed it as fact. I’ve wasted much of my life trying to figure out what someone’s wrinkled eyebrow meant, when they were probably wondering if they left the stove on. I worked myself into fits of worry based on nothing but a smirk and my own imagination. This is a bad habit, my friends. This is why the F.E.A.R. acronym is so helpful. I’ve had to practice recognizing when I’m wasting time on false (or imagined) evidence. Instead, I need to be brave and speak. Ask my question and learn the answer. Yll are awesome.  ❤️😊😘  Yesterday, on the calendar, I became another year older but most definitely another year happier.  These days, getting older is feared, run from and covered up, but in my experience, life IS so much sweeter as you get older!! I look forward to the years to come.  You begin to really know WHO you are, who your people are (and aren't), and who you want in your life. You become more secure & grounded. You realize what's WORTH your energy and what's just not anymore. You enjoy the small things more because you allow yourself to take the time to enjoy them. There are fewer questions and more clarity.  The past few days, I went wandering in the mountains with my favorite person and fur babies. I walked on paths I've never walked on, saw things I've never seen before, and stopped to feel the sun on my face for a little longer. God blessed me on my birthday with perfect 40-degree weather, I was in heaven. 😊 So thankful for all the little things that bring lasting joy and memories. I treasure the slow mornings with hot coffee and pup snuggles, the plans we make together and conversations with a view, the thoughtfulness of my husband who always makes my birthday such a big deal.   I've made some huge changes to my life the past year, and it's allowed me to begin to follow through on new goals. What is fearless authenticity? I’ve been working on my social anxiety for a few years now. My anxiety is very specific. The biggest thing I struggle with male authority figures. In certain situations, I’ve been known to retreat inside myself and occasionally disassociate rather than have to engage. I also have authority anxiety in which I struggle to have meaningful conversations with certain people. There are some commonalities, like a boss, a supervisor, a professor, a pastor, a celebrity. Then sometimes, it just randomly happens with a person and I walk away from a conversation feeling humiliated. It’s usually when there is some sort of power dynamic, and I feel less than the other person. I know in my head that I have equal value to each person I interact with, but my body does what it wants. I’ve had to practice ways to help myself when I find myself in such situations. I also get anxiety about sharing certain things with others. Talking about my faith is one of them. Politics, certainly. Anything controversial that I think could pull me into a debate. I despise conflict with other people and avoid it at all costs. Which brings me back to today’s question. Living with fearless authenticity means not being afraid to be me. I know my fear is illogical. I know I have value and am capable of having meaningful conversations with others. I know where my fear originated and that I don’t need to be afraid anymore. Telling myself this truth isn’t always enough. I need to practice. I need to engage with strangers and talk about my faith and debate things (ahh!) with others. I don’t always want to, but we don’t get better at things when we don’t practice. So, I’m working on being myself without being afraid of what others think. I’m working on not giving others the power to decide my worth. Ever feel like your life is unmanageable? I sure have. Today I want to share part of my life that I’ve previously kept off social media. For six years now, I’ve been an active part of Celebrate Recovery. What is CR? Simply stated, CR it’s a Christ-centered 12-step program for people who need support with areas of their lives that are causing them trouble. This could be addictions. It could be trauma. It could also be grief, anxiety, anger, depression, childhood dysfunction, relationship issues, etc. You can work on anything you want at CR. The program helps people develop healthy routines and repair broken relationships. It’s a journey in community toward healing and being made whole. Why do I go to CR and what do these coins mean? When you start a healing journey at CR, you are invited to take a coin to help you remember what you’re working on. As your journey progresses, you earn milestone coins to celebrate your small wins. Writing the topic and date on the coins to help you remember. I first went to CR to work on anger and grief. Over the past six years, I’ve worked on many things. I struggle with codependency, social anxiety, control, trusting God, and living in the present rather than my imagination—daydreaming about the future or ruminating on the past. Ahem. Fantasy writer here… Most recently, I’ve been working on three main things: social anxiety, being grateful and positive (as opposed to pessimistic and negative), and living with fearless authenticity. It’s the fearless authenticity that motivated today’s post. Social media is a trouble area for my social anxiety. I was at the point where I was going to take a social media break or dive in and be as authentic as possible. Since I’m working on not letting fear win, as part of my recovery journey, I decided to talk about my anxiety on social media. Each Friday I will be posting about this. I’m calling it Fearless Fridays because I’m a grateful believer in Jesus Christ working on living with fearless authenticity. 🎉

Today is world Parkinson’s day A subject close to my heart, my Gran was a sufferer and my Father in Law is also living with PD. Exercise really is a game changer for managing, improving and even reversing the symptoms. For example I’m teaching my father in law how to perform a barbell clean. It’s complicated so it challenges his learning skills and requires a high force output to help him ‘re learn’ neural pathways. Sometimes the symptoms are subtle sometimes more extreme. Many are also unseen . Medications play a key role in management but targeted, specific exercise makes a huge difference. As I learnt from completing the L1 & L2 PD Warrior course on neuroplasticity in Parkinsons. It really is the best course I have ever taken in my life because it genuinely changes lives for the better. The first slide shows how the brain and nervous system can degrade, exercise helps to slow and even reverse that. Unlike the medications (which are still key) there is literally no downside to exercise. What is Parkinson’s? Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition. This means that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time.  People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working. Around 153,000 people live with Parkinson’s in the UK. And it’s the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. (Parkinsons UK). . Yesterday was 18 yrs since I made an agonizing decision. I packed up most my life in a uhaul, moved to CO, to start over. Every year, I remember this day as it was the turning point in my life. I told myself I could do it on my own. I had to make it or make it, those were the options. I was scared, I was very angry. I packed all that up & carried it along with me too. I wish I could go back & tell myself I hadn't seen anything yet & I was about to take a lot more punches. I wish I could've told myself to not settle, to just work hard, to wait. I began again. I choose to make my passion my job & it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Along the way I came up with ''Live Brave', there were days I'd repeat this to myself over & over. Most days, I didn't feel brave. I felt like a fraud, but I kept going. The next 8 years were rough, full of pain & rock bottom, and my anger grew. I used it as protection & the walls around me rose. I was tested repeatedly in a lot of ways, & oftentimes, I failed, but resiliency was something I never lacked. I would not give up. For years, I planned everything out & wrote it down in journals as I saved ALL my pennies. I hit a lot of goals, I was "successful", but I was holding on to so much and it was holding me back. I had given up the idea I'd be understood for who I really was. I was losing myself & my faith in the pain. One day there he was with a gentleness & understanding I'd never known, only hoped for. He astounded me. My walls began to crumble. I thought I had to change myself to be understood, but that was wrong. I needed a Viking, I needed a man secure enough to let me follow my ambition, and strong enough to face my storms. Who admired all the things about me that tepid men were intimidated by. Who saw both my sharp edges & my heart & chose to wrap his arms around both. I could finally breathe. My entire life changed. Walls fell down, doors opened and we continued to hit goals together. I'm grateful for the complete brokenness because God led me straight to you. We are shaped by what we go through for something far greater. I love you LaBron.

. We arrived shortly after sunrise. It was raining and cloudy. Walking out to the beach, holding my breath, I didn't see anything, but as i got closer, the sun peaked out from behind the rain clouds... there they were.  Black lava rock sand is the perfect backdrop for the chunks of broken shipwrecked icebergs that glisten and glow like diamonds in the sun. The pure glacier ice and its many shades of blue change hue in the varying light. Incredibly beautiful place.  I was able to pull my camera out in between rain showers and catch a few shots. Not a lot of sun, but I made the best of the light I had. This unique beach was one of the highlights for me. I am so grateful to have experienced it.
