A little striped skink friend bathing in the sun. ^^ These lil guys belong to the family Scincidae. They're skittish creatures but I managed to get close enough to get a picture! I believe the species featured today is in the genus Trachylepis, but since the species all appear quite similar it can be hard to tell them apart. Lizard research on World Lizard Day!...unfortunately I still have no idea what particular species of Agamid this is (in the Trapelus genus...I think? If you know please message!) A Thin-toed Gecko in northwestern Afghanistan, October, 2020. First off, I am not sure which species this Thin-toed Gecko (genus Tenuidactylus) is...I saw several dozen over the several months I spent in Afghanistan, however an exact species determination has eluded me. Any help anyone can provide is appreciated! Second, these little lizards are incredible! I have never observed a more cold-tolerant gecko species, anywhere. They were active most of the year, even hunting at night when temperatures were in the low 50's in the late fall and early spring. just wanted to show you this gorgeous & sassy friend I hung out with this morning 🦎 a lot of people on my stories were surprised to learn that lizards can drop their tails when they feel threatened?? this works to distract predators while they make their escape. I was just moving my trash bins and poor bb thought I was a predator. 😭 she seemed uninjured otherwise but slow moving (maybe due to shock? cold temps? or another defense mechanism - staying still while her disembodied tail dances away and distracts me). It was still pretty chilly out so I worried about hypothermia since reptiles need a heat source to stay warm, and she didn’t seem to have the wherewithal to take cover.. sooo i put her in a box inside for a couple hours until her behavior returned to normal. I knew she was good to go when she got more active and started giving me the stink eye. I’m def no herpetology expert so this may have been unnecessary- I just felt guilty about scaring the literal pants off her and wanted her to have her best shot. lizards who’ve dropped their tails can do fine, but they may get knocked down a peg in social status and will have to consume extra calories to grow it back. anyway that’s all, lizards are some of my fav animals to meet & photograph and I never get to see them so they always get a main feed post. 🥰

So I think this little doe-eyed lizard is a five lined skink (as opposed to a Broadhead skink or a southeastern five lined skink) but I’m not 100%. There’s a whole thing about how many scales there are between its nose and its eye as well as the scales at the entrance of its ears. Scutellation, it’s called: the manner in which scales are arranged. Also, southeastern five lineds prefer dry habitats, which Congaree national swamp is not, really.
