The United States’ neutrality during World War I suffered its first major hit on May 7, 1915, when a German submarine torpedoed the RMS Lusitania off of the coast of Ireland, killing approximately 1,100 people. The ship had been carrying munitions from America to Britain, and 120 Americans were among the casualties. Although Germany initially used the transport of weapons as justification for the attack, they apologized soon afterwards, not wanting to antagonize the USA further. Commemorating the men, women, and children who lost their lives or started to live with the horrific trauma 109 years ago today during the sinking of Lusitania. The RMS Lusitania enroute from New York to Liverpool. She was one of the fastest and most luxurious ocean liners afloat which rivaled the other great ocean liners of her time. She was steaming near the Old Head at Kinsale, Ireland when she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. The Lusitania took 18 minutes to sink. Of the 1,962 people on board, 1,198 lost their lives. Included on the passenger list were 139 Americans including Alfred Vanderbilt from one of America's wealthiest families. The loss of 128 of the Americans on board increased calls for American entry into WWI. Some historians point to it as a main catalyst for America's entry. Saddest of all, most of the children didn't make it. 94 of the 129 children died and 4 out of 29 infants survived. Following the disaster, Lord Mersey who had done the inquiries into the Titanic and Empress of Ireland disasters would lead the inquiry into the Lusitania disaster. On May 7, 1915, Cunard Line’s RMS Lusitania was struck by a torpedo from the German U-20 and sank in just 18 minutes off the south coast of Ireland. She was returning to Liverpool from New York with 1,959 passengers. Of those on board, only 761 survived. 1,198 people drowned including 128 U.S. citizens. The Lusitania sunk within 18 minutes. The attack would help propel the entry of the United States into the First World War. In this letter, Edward Nolan writing to The O’Rahilly, refers to O'Brien Butler's plan to travel home on the Lusitania. His body was not recovered. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗠𝗦 𝗟𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮 Happened #otd in the Celtic Sea, near Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, the RMS Lusitania was from the Cunard Line in Britian, she was built in 1906 along side her sister ship. In May of 1915, the first year since ww1 was coming and the Lusitania was still a passenger ship, on what would be her last voyage, she sailed from her return route from New York City to Liverpool, many on this voyage where Americans, before boarding, passengers had been notified before departing New York of the general danger of voyaging into the area in a British ship. It was 14:10pm on the 7th when the U-20 commanded by Kapitänleutnant Walther Schwieger launched a single torpedo at the Cunard liner. After the torpedo struck, a second explosion occurred inside the ship (she also had 173 tons of war supplies). As the titanic didn’t had enough lifeboats and a lot of time, the opposite happend here, they did had enough lifeboats, but from the torpedo hitting her to her sinking at 14:28pm, they only had an 18 minute window to get out and off of the ship. After her sinking, only 763 survivors out of the 1,960 passengers, crew and stowaways aboard would survive, 128 of the lost souls where Americans, this would be one of the main factors that pull America into the war two years later The sinking turned public opinion in many countries against Germany. Audrey Warren Pearl was Lusitania last and youngest survivor to passed away in 2011, she was only three months old at three months old

The sinking of the Lusitania put a pause on the German unrestricted submarine warfare and was a big step towards American joining the war. 'Lusitania had 4.2 million rounds of rifle ammunition, 1,250 cases of shrapnel shells and 18 cases of non-explosive fuses hidden away in its cargo hold, bound for the Western Front. Although one of its four boiler rooms had been shut down to save coal, Lusitania could still easily outrun any German submarine when operating at full speed. But on the morning of May 7, instead of zigzagging, which made it harder for submarines to aim, he charted a straight course that brought him right into the path of U-20. At 2:10 p.m., lookouts aboard Lusitania noticed a torpedo streaking toward them. By that time, however, it was too late to act. Detonating as it hit the starboard hull. Then, just seconds later, a second explosion erupted from deep within the vessel, sending it careening to one side. To this day, the source of the second explosion remains a mystery. Some historians believe it was a boiler room blast, while others blame coal dust, a steam line rupture or the contraband munitions onboard. The sinking of Lusitania prompted an outcry in the United States (as well as in other Allied countries). “The freely expressed unofficial feeling is that the United States must declare war or forfeit European respect,” the U.S. ambassador to Britain told President Woodrow Wilson the next day. Yet Wilson did not immediately send in the troops, choosing to remain neutral in exchange for a German apology and an end to unrestricted submarine warfare. Far from forgotten, Lusitania featured prominently in recruitment posters and war bond advertisements as Americans geared up for battle in Europe' in 1917. . . . The Olympic Second Class Dining Room in Minecraft The Dining Room was the largest room allocated to Second Class on the ship. 394 passengers could be seated at a time on long tables with swivel chairs, unlike the First Class one that sported much more private dining with larger tables and moveable chairs. The room was panelled with oak with a orange and cream linoleum floor and mahogany furniture. Anem acabant les sèries luses 🇵🇹. Tast dels magnífics murals fets en rajoles ("azulejos" de colors) que es poden veure en estacions del metro de Lisboa 🇵🇹. Aquests en concret són de l'estação do Oriente, de la línea Vermelha 🔴, que dona accés al Parque das Naçoes, on l'Expo 98.🇵🇹 / Lisboa és la ciutat amb més rajoles del món. Des de palaus, cases senyorials, modestes residències, estacions de tren…, la ceràmica en les més variades formes i estils marca la fesomia de la capital portuguesa i li confereixen aquest caràcter tan únic. Em 426, o rei alano Átax, foi morto em batalha contra os visigodos, e esse ramo dos alanos subsequentemente apelou ao rei vândalo Gunderico para aceitar a coroa alana. LUSITANIA - In addition to the pictures of the Lusitania at Fishguard, Wales, UK, that I previously posted, I wanted to share unique photos of her passengers and crew boarding or disembarking via her tender, S.S. Pembroke. Many of the passengers arrived at Fishguard on the Great Western Railway train, the Ocean Express. If you happen to have any more pictures of the tender S.S. Lusitania which first called at Fishguard in September 1909, was in fact the last transatlantic liner ever to call at Fishguard, on 14 September 1914. Whilst the Great Western Railway hoped that the transatlantic trade via Fishguard could be resumed after the First World War, this did not transpire. On 7 May 1915, she was struck by a German torpedo off the Irish coast, on her homeward voyage across the Atlantic from New York to Liverpool. She sank within twenty minutes. 1,198 of the 1,959 passengers aboard, including children and crew, perished." #Lusitania
