#tipografia #ink #glasgow4 #modernism #mackintosh #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #YoFloribunda

Hill House : " The Hill House was first and foremost designed as a family home. The Blackie family lived here from 1904, when the house was completed, to 1953 when Walter Blackie died, marking nearly five decades of life within its walls. The Blackies were a family predominantly made up of women. Walter and Anna Blackie had five children: four daughters and a son. #mackintosh #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #charlesrenniemackintosh #bloom #watercolors

Yesterday’s highlight was seeing “The Sleeping Princess” by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh at The Hill House outside Glasgow, which was Designed and built by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Blackie family of children’s book publishers. It’s thought that Margaret actually did most of the interior design work, but this is the only piece that can definitely be attributed to her. She created it for this spot in the drawing room. It probably took her the full four years the house was under construction to make, due to the nature of the gesso. Lots of lessons to be drawn here, including that good work takes time, and that we should credit women for their work. #thehillhouse #charlesrenniemackintosh #charlesrenniemackintoshrose #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #artnouveau

One of my favourite artists from the Art Nouveau period is, by far and above, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. She was the wife of legendary Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, but didn't gain anywhere near the fame and notoriety of her husband. Margaret MM's work eschewed the clipped, almost pop design of some of her husband's work. Many of the great names in Art Nouveau were strongly associated with advertising, and as such were more focused and foreshadowed what would eventually become pop art. Her artwork took as much time and space as it needed to explore an idea, with huge swirling rectilinear curves and almost oceanic levels of intricacy and detail. Still, somehow, they all pointed back to a handful of focal points - a testament to how well she could guide the eyes within what was a very busy and complex picture. Her husband Charles (Rennie Mackintosh) wrote to her in a letter "Remember, you are half if not three-quarters in all my architectural work ..." and reportedly "Margaret has genius, I have only talent." #artnouveau #art #renniemacintosh #charlesrennemackintosh #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #glasgow #jugendstil #gustavklimt #mucha

This cropped version of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh's 'The May Queen,' is similar to the one which sold for nearly £123k last year with buyer's premium at auction. She was classed as an Art Nouveau artist by some and known for her work using the 'Glasgow Style'. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh worked together to design and furnish their bedroom. The pictured decorative metal insert adorns their bedroom mantelpiece and was crafted by Margaret in 1899. The central decorative element is filled with symbolism and little details, such as several Mackintosh roses. One can view this wonderful piece of metalwork, along with the rest of the beautiful bedroom Margaret and Charles designed, at the Mackintosh House at the @hunterianglasgow . This photo features the dark pine entranceway and lower landing of the main staircase at the Hill House. The Hill House was built in Helensburgh between 1902 and 1904. It is undoubtedly one of the most renowned Mackintosh works and was donated to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) in 1982. From the @nationaltrustforscotland - “The Hill House is considered to be a Scottish architectural domestic masterpiece. Commissioned by Glasgow publisher Walter Blackie, the married duo of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the artist Margaret Macdonald collaborated to create almost everything you can see here, from the building itself to the furniture and textiles.” Visit @thehillhouse_nts to learn more about this wonderful house. . . . . #mackintosh #charlesrenniemackintosh #margaretmacdonald #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #design #artdeco #glasgowstyle #artsandcrafts #secesión #stylemodern #artnouveau #modernstyle #darkwood #entryway #hallway #moderndesign #scotland #helensburgh #nationaltrustforscotland #hillhouse #crmsociety #mackintoshsociety

DAY 3! 🌷🌿🥀 . Today's palette is inspired by a stunning tapestry panel designed and made by Margaret Macdonald (Mackintosh), one of the 'Glasgow Four' which includes Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret's husband. . This work is on display at the Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland, which I visited in 2017 and took sooo many pictures to inspire my own 'Mackintosh' collection of Art Nouveau designs. . The colours are so delicate yet striking in combination, especially the check/weave, and I love all the surface details. For #valentinesday, how about some hearts and a Glasgow rose? These pictured here are found within the Mackintosh House at the @hunterianglasgow From the National Trust: “Charles and Margaret met in 1892 when they were students at the Glasgow School of Art and were married in St Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Dumbarton in 1900. They were undoubtedly a perfect match, both as a couple and as artists. But their marriage would have been deemed controversial amongst polite Glasgow society, as Charles was 32 and Margaret 35 when they wed. One of the best sources we have for understanding their love is the Port-Vendres letters. While Mackintosh has been widely mythologised in popular culture, the letters reveal a more relatable, human side to him. In 1927, the two were separated for 6 weeks, with Margaret going to London to seek medical and dental care, as well as hopefully sell some of Charles’s paintings. Charles remained in the Hotel du Commerce in Port-Vendres in the south of France, where they had chosen to live. During this separation, Charles was lost without his ‘lover’ and ‘chum’ and wrote to Margaret every day. While Margaret’s letters no longer survive, we still have Charles’s and they reveal just how deeply in love the two were, even in their ‘golden years’. Charles decided to call this work his ‘Chronycle’ and joked that it was full of ‘fleeting impressions and disconnected sentences’ but that ‘anyone who can read their meaning would find only three words, “I love you”’. Mackintosh was always keen to celebrate his wife’s artistic abilities, and on 16 May he wrote to her: ‘You must remember that in all my architectural efforts you have been half if not three quarters in them’. The two were not only romantic partners, but soul mates – he writes: ‘tonight is quiet and lonely and sad because you are not here’.”

I am reluctantly letting go of this amazing brooch. This piece was created by Scottish jeweler Pat Cheney for the Glasgow Museums in the 1990s. They commissioned Cheney to create a few pieces for their exhibition of the "Glasgow Four"... Arts & Crafts artists Charles Rennie Macintosh, James Herbert MacNair, and the sisters they each married, Margaret Macdonald and Frances Macdonald. This brooch is based on a design by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh featured on an art exhibition poster from 1896...it's amazing! 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The Mysterious Garden by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1911) 🧚‍♂️⛲️ This watercolour depicts a dream like scene where a figure appears to slumber beneath a row of mask-like heads. Potentially inspired by Maurice Maeterlinck’s, ‘The Blue Bird’, performed in Glasgow in 1910, this watercolour reflects the influence of Aubrey Beardsley and Jan Toorop. Exhibited in 1912, critics praised its ‘beautiful play of hyacinth blues’ and ‘bewitching harmonies of colour’, yet were intrigued by its inherent 'strangeness'. The deliberate vagueness of the subject mirrors the era’s shift from realism to fantasy and imagination. The Mysterious Garden captivates with its iridescent watercolour surface combining 19th-century beauty with Art Nouveau fantasy. Materials: watercolour and ink over pencil on vellum, laid on board On display: Scottish National Gallery Credit: @natgalleriessco, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh: Purchased with Art Fund support, 2011 Visit Mackintosh at the Willow by making a reservation via the link in our bio. #TheOriginalWillowTeaRoomsBuilding #NationalTrustForScotland #MargaretMacdonaldMackintosh #ScottishNationalGallery #VisitScotland

Title: Summer (1904) Artist: Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh Style: Glasgow Style FYI: Highly regarded as a notable artist and designer of gesso panels and metalwork, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh’s ‘Summer’ panel is an allegorical work in which a stylized Art Nouveau figure of a woman and four infants represent the growth and greenness of the season. The panel is based upon an 1897 watercolor of the same name depicting one of the four seasons. These watercolors were completed by Margaret and her sister Frances Macdonald MacNair. Gesso is a white material made from chalk or gypsum that is bound with animal glue. It is known to have been used as far back as ancient Egypt where it was used as a base for both painted wall panels and coffins. The artist of the Vienna Secession was strongly drawn to the work of Margaret and her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Scottish couple and their Viennese counterparts believe strongly in the artistic ideal that there should be no division between fine art and decorative art. Even though Margaret and her husband frequently collaborated, it is said that when the couple exhibited in 1900, it was Margaret who was praised by the Viennese. Now, the work and artistic vision of Margaret are much more recognized by art and design historians. 🤔It is believed that Margaret was one of the artists famed Viennese Seccionists Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann drew inspiration from. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #MargaretMacdonaldMackintosh #GlasgowStyle #1900s #20thCenturyArt #NationalMuseumsOfScotland 📷National Museums Scotland 📝Global Arts, Cultures and Design “Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh’s Summer Panel.” National Museums Scotland, www.nms.ac.uk/explore-our-collections/stories/global-arts-cultures-and-design/mackintosh/chapters/margaret-macdonald-mackintosh/. An amazing birds eye view of the rooftop of the Hill House in Helensburgh inside it’s specially built protective box. The box is to help preserve the house from further damage from the elements until solutions can hopefully be found to repair it. The building is one of my favourites, it’s sad to see it this but work is underway and some render has been removed. The first picture is a thermal image showing damp & water damage, the last one looking out through the chainmail mesh box towards the Firth of Clyde. #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #artnouveau #glasgowstyle #design #painting #illustration #classics #bible #homer

I was lucky enough to stay here for a weekend many years ago (long before it was consigned to its "box"!). We were fortunate enough to meet the lovely curator who kindly offered to show us around. It was just the most amazing experience and one I will never forget! #advent #adventcalendar #historicwindows #windowsofinstagram #windows #24windowsofadvent #buildingsarchaeology #artnouveau #stairwindow #stainedglass #charlesrenniemackintosh #hillhouse #20thcenturyarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #domesticarchitecture #scottisharchitects #helensburgh #artsandcrafts #glasgowschoolofart #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #glasgowstyle

🏁🥀 A little throwback to Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, featured in (possibly christmas themed) Episode 18: Creature Double Feature along with Ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai 🥀🏁 We dive into her mixed media work La Mort Parfumée (Perfumed Death) from 1921, inspired by a play with a gruesome ending. Not one to fit into labels, the Victorian gender role rejecting Margaret was a pioneer of the Glasgow style and her work, overlooked in its time, eventually went on to influence the Arts and Craft and Art Nouveau movements. . . . ✨LINK IN BIO🔗 💫 . . . Yesterday’s visits Part One - First the @dommuseumwien - I’ve already put the series of beautiful Virgin & Child. The statute of Mary Magdalene I found particularly haunting. The two pieces of ecclesiastical embroidery beautiful- one in a morbid sort of way. I then walked to @mak_vienna to see Gustavia Klimts Garden (the detail of the bird) plus other wonderful examples of “Vienna 1900” including the panel by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. #vienna #adayinvienna #museumvisits #vienna #vienna1900 #marymagdalene #religiousart #embroidery #religiousembroidery #momemtomori #margaretmacdonaldmackintosh #artnouveau #biedermeierfurniture #dommuseumwien #makvienna #shadow #bentwoodchair #textiledesign #furnituredesign
