Stand have been working with The Glasgow School of Art since 2004. Our longest client relationship. And one that has won us a large number of awards over the years. The Way In > To The GSA is part of the 2024/25 student recruitment campaign. A pair of booklets that talks about the school in the context of Glasgow as a creative powerhouse and inspirational place to live, work and create. The booklets are based on the format of creative sketchbook and scrapbook bulging at the seams with inspiration. The book is printed @ J Thomson Colour Printers on a series of different self-coloured tactile papers - form-cut to various apparently random sizing creating a layered effect that drags you into the content. It’s right up there with the best work we have done for the GSA. This is the only recorded self-portrait of Paul McPhail with fellow artist, Jenny Saville, to whom he is married. 'Mother & Child' dated 1992, oil on canvas, is being offered with an estimate of £30,000-50,000 in Bonhams' Scottish Art Sale on 15th May. . Painted in 1992, shortly after the completion of their studies at the Glasgow School of Art, this large-scale work shows a young artist fascinated by the human body, and one who was not afraid to challenge accepted notions of beauty while exploring deeper themes of the human condition. . The inspiration for 'Mother & Child' is Michelangelo's marble La Pieta housed in St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. Unlike the original, with its focus on harmony and balance in its more refined form, McPhail's figures are all too human. There is real weight and volume to these fleshy bodies, rendered so effectively in McPhail's dynamic brushstrokes. . Ian and Rosemary took the opportunity to enjoy “A Bonnie Way: Unravelling the seduction of the countryside” - a traveling exhibition which was at the Glasgow School of Art on Altyre Estate this afternoon. The exhibition is a partnership with Hospitalfield Arts in Arbroath, presenting the work of three artists, Bobbi Cameron, Ufuoma Essi and Sarah Rose, from Hospitalfield’s Residencies programme. Their artworks explore experiences of life and conversations in rural and semi-rural places, accompanied by an index of community-based publications, connecting their questions, manifestos, and propositions of people in rural places from across Scotland. PATTERNS AND THE BOOK. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, design for Blackie’s front cover and spine. Ballantyne’s ‘The Gorilla Hunters’ 1923 Talwin Morris (see previous postings) introduced Mackintosh to the published Walter Blackie. The result was CRM’s designs for Blackie’s large private villa, Hill House . CRM did his first Blackie book design in 1912, one of the Rambler Travel Series. Later his Blackie designs sharpened to a new geometricality for the 1926 Boys and Girls Bookshelf. ‘Gorilla Hunters’ was one of the series, Library for Boys and Girls, of a muted and dense abstract grid pattern. An alternation of a shape empty and the shape filled. Francis & James Smith (Glasgow & London), a circa 1900 solid oak open bookcase in the Arts and Crafts taste. Makers stamp to the reverse. The Smiths were noted makers in the mid to late 19th century and, more remarkably, made the furniture for Miss Cranstons tearoom in Glasgow, to designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1907, a similar date to this bookshelf. 118cm tall.
