Time to cut the wind battered euphorbia Wulfenii down, on a misty May morning. I love using these as a bold, architectural plant for early colour in the garden, and they thrive in this exposed site. The hares were scampering across the fields, that made me very happy, what a treat to work in this beautiful countryside. #euphorbia Wulfenii #springperennials #wiltshiredowns #marlboroughdowns #swindongardendesigner #architecturalplants

The stunning Pewsey Downs, with the Marlborough Downs in the far distance behind. I can see the top of our farm on the highest point of the Marlborough Downs, in the distance beyond the Oilseed Rape and Avebury. What a wonderful place to live and to farm!

5/3/2024, 7:34:55 AM

A Roebuck in one of our fields of Oilseed Rape yesterday evening. So lovely to see the sun for an hour.....!

More Wheatear passing through the Downs early yesterday morning. They only stay for a couple of days and then they continue their journey to their breeding ground. I nearly stepped on this one as I didn’t see it on the path in front of me.

The Full moon rising yesterday evening, behind some trees on the top of our farm. It only made a very brief appearance, for literally a few minutes, before disappearing again behind the clouds. Known as the Full Pink moon, the name actually refers to the early springtime blooms of a pink wildflower native to eastern North America, called Creeping phlox. The names of Full moons originate from the North American tribes from many years ago.

A break from the Falkland Islands today, and back home to the Shires. What an absolute joy to see the sun yesterday morning, we even had a hint of frost here in the valleys. Avebury Stone Circle, and village, with Silbury hill behind, and the Pewsey Downs beyond. What a view of the Shires, with Spring bursting into life.

I LOVE big ancient stones. I’m in the Marlborough area for a dig tomorrow. Took a trek today to a special megalith: The Polisher - a Neolithic stone hand axe polishing stone. Honestly blew me away to be in the place where these beautiful sculptural tools were made by hand, over many thousands of passes on this polissoir. Close to Avebury, and Stonehenge, the landscape is littered with massive natural Sarsen stones. Post a vid later, still buzzing off the I AM MAXIMUS Grand National win. #megalith #megarak #marlboroughdowns #polissoir #polishingstone #neolithic #handaxe #stoneagebritain #stoneage #stoneagetools #ancientbritain

Dramatic dawn skies at Avebury Stone Circle a few days ago.

4/13/2024, 7:42:35 AM

At last....a hint of Spring in the air yesterday. The Corn buntings on our farm certainly thought so anyway!

4/12/2024, 7:29:25 AM

A Roebuck a few days ago, just catching the first rays of morning sun, isolated against a very dark background.

4/11/2024, 7:45:41 AM

Sadly we missed the partial eclipse of the sun in the UK, a couple of days ago, as most of the West of the country was covered in cloud and rain. However, we did very briefly have some stunning skies at dawn last Saturday, seen here over one of the beech clumps on Hackpen hill, on the Marlborough Downs.

4/10/2024, 7:51:37 AM

Silbury Hill a couple of days ago....with some sunshine! It is very unusual to see quite so much spring water around the mound, and the River Kennet in full flow, at this time of year. Lovely to see a bit of colour in the surrounding countryside.

A Roebuck silhouetted in the early morning light a couple of days ago, high up on the Marlborough Downs.

4/8/2024, 6:55:31 AM

The River Kennet at West Overton, just before sunrise, nearly a fortnight ago. Have we seen the sun since....? If so, I must have blinked. One of the longest sustained periods of virtually no sun, and continuous wet and windy weather I can ever remember. The farm is as wet now, if not wetter, as it has been all winter, with no change in the weather until at least the middle of April.

And just like that it’s one month to go until the Marlborough Downs Challenge 2024! A Lapwing on the very top of the Marlborough Downs, seen recently. Also known as Peewits because of their display call. One of the most lovely birds seen on the Downs. The rather dark plumage shows wonderful iridescent colours in sunlight.

A trio of Corn Buntings backlit with the setting sun, seen recently on our farm. We are fortunate in that these farmland birds are still relatively common on the Marlborough Downs, unlike many other parts of the country.

4/3/2024, 7:55:46 AM

The most common of our native deer, the Roe deer, tend to be solitary in summer, but form small groups in winter. The males have relatively short antlers, which they begin to grow in November, shedding the velvet from them in the spring. At the moment they are ‘in velvet’ as seen here a couple of days ago on the Marlborough Downs. By summer, they are ready for the rutting season. They shed their antlers in October, and begin to grow them again.

One, two, three.....let’s go! The Spaniels in flight on the Downs. All dogs have their own characteristics, however to me spaniels have such a joy of life. Always willing to please, and always happy too.

3/27/2024, 7:36:44 AM

The Spaniels on a Sarsen stone, on top of the Marlborough Downs, catching the first rays of the morning sun. It was such a change to actually see the sun at the weekend!

3/26/2024, 7:24:19 AM

It’s great to be back home in the Shires, after being away on two trips in the last few weeks. Meanwhile, back home it has been wonderful to get some better weather this weekend....at last! The weather has been a real challenge on the farm for the last month or so, when normally we should be busy on the land. A lot of our fields are still waterlogged, which is not surprising since the rainfall over the past 12 months has been double the normal. Anyway....great to see a stunning sunset in dramatic skies a couple of days ago, from the top of our farm on the Marlborough Downs.

Just thought I’d record the last of my sketchbook studies before getting back to the messy stuff!! I’ve been cleaning out my studio which was becoming a bit of a dumping ground! It’s amazing the amount of things you keep ‘just in case’! After 6 months of not being in there it clearly wasn’t missed, so now ruthlessly binned! All good this end, moved on to my next 3 treatments and adjusting to new side effects but I’m getting my mojo back, my taste has come back and even the bald patch on my head has started to grow back! Last September I made one of the best decisions in contacting @matt_the_tree_sparrow about starting to train as a bird ringer. Matt’s enthusiasm and knowledge has been inspiring making every session truly rewarding. What a fabulous few months meeting fantastic people and seeing some awesome birds up close. The team of ringers at North Wilts Ringing Group have been fabulous in sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm. Looking forward to the coming months discovering the varied wonders North Wiltshire bird ringing has to offer. One of the most common garden and farmland birds, and one of the most beautiful. Blue tit numbers have been increasing in recent years, helped by the provision of nest boxes and supplementary feeding in gardens and on farms.

A Short-eared owl diving on it’s prey. Their success rate is high, in addition to their excellent vision, hunting owls also rely on their sense of hearing to find and locate prey.

A Short-eared owl at very close range yesterday afternoon. Just look at the talons....all owls have sharp, curved, vice-like talons. They are made of keratin. As their talons wear down, they continue to grow and get sharper. They are designed for catching and killing their prey.

2/8/2024, 7:32:02 AM

A Waxwing seen recently. These beautiful birds come to the UK in search of food when berries run out close to their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and western Russia. They can turn up at anytime during the winter and in varying numbers. If berries remain plentiful in northern Europe, very few Waxwings will move to the UK.

2/6/2024, 7:50:02 AM

A Barn owl hunting a few days ago in the last sunlight of the day. However they are also perfectly adapted to hunt with deadly precision in the dark of night.

2/5/2024, 7:51:41 AM

Geese in a morning flight in the dawn skies, just past West Overton church and over the River Kennet. The sound of geese calling in the dawn skies is evocative....and also a beautiful sight.

2/2/2024, 7:46:48 AM

A Short-eared owl hunting low through the cover a few days ago. Although owls have keen eyesight, it is sound that helps them locate the prey that is out of sight in the deep undergrowth. They can also distinguish prey species by the different movement sounds they make. The owls different ears allow their brain to work out exactly where its prey is hiding, even in the dark, or under long grass. Such stunningly beautiful birds!

The staple diet of Short-eared owls is voles ....and the same goes for Kestrels. What a sight when this Kestrel tried to wrestle the vole from the owl. After a ferocious fight lasting around a minute, the owl managed to hang on to its food, and the Kestrel flew off empty handed. It must be quite dangerous to try and get your food like this, rather than hunting for it in the normal way, but basically Kestrels do not like owls in their area, so it’s a good excuse to hassle them.

The Full Wolf moon. The moon becomes full when it is exactly on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, so the entire Earth-facing side is illuminated. January’s full moon is called the Wolf moon, the origin of the name stems from the Sioux language, which describes this moon as “wolves run together.”

Walking the Ridgeway: Ogbourne St George to Barbury Castle (13km) On road parking is available in Ogbourne St George. Begin by taking the road leading to the Church (Church Lane). Enter the gate leading you into the churchyard and walk around the church to the path leading out through a gate into a field on the other side. Walk up the field & continue on this path to a road; cross taking the path on the other side. The Ridgeway continues straight on but the views are best if you return this way, so take the bridleway that you will come to off to the right instead. Follow this for just over 2km, to a gate where there is a choice of paths: take the path straight ahead. This will lead you out to a clay pigeon shooting venue: the bridleway is signposted, but basically you need to follow the path around to the bottom of the car park. Follow this path past the bottom perimeter edge of the car park to a field; enter the field (path is non existent here - just walk straight across it in the same direction to a road.) Turn right at the road, and then take the next track off to the left. After just over a km, you will see a route up to Barbury Castle off to your left (you are back on the Ridgeway path). Follow this across Barbury Castle & then out past the carpark. Follow the signs for the Ridgeway. You will turn right along a road and then the Ridgeway will be signposted off to the left. Follow this all the way back down to where you will meet the bridleway you originally took; retrace your steps back to Ogbourne St George from here. #ridgeway #wiltshiking #ramblers #wiltshireramblers #getoutside #getwalking #wellbeing #maps #footpaths #theridgeway #hillforts #visitwiltshire #timeforwiltshire #marlboroughdowns
