IN ESCROW Escrow entered for 2 good friends of mine just in time for their first baby to arrive in September! They’re first time home buyers, so making the experience as seamless and stress free as possible was a must. They’ve been amazing to work with and I’m so excited to see them settle into their new house and make it a home. A perfect Spanish bungalow built in 1928.

For a brief moment I thought I was in Colonial Mexico again…. But no, just Ojai, California. This gorgeous arcade was built in 1917 by architects Frank Meade and Richard Requa. The Mission-Revival style arches and thick adobe walls evoke the essence of California’s Spanish and Mexican pasts. In the distance, the post office bell tower of the same period, mimics a colonial Catholic church in the town’s plaza. #missionrevival #california #californiahistory #historic #historical #historicsite #historicarchitecture #architecture #architecturephotography #spanishcolonial #spanishcolonialarchitecture #spanishcolonialrevival #californiastyle #californiaarchitecture #architecturehistory

When a home has ‘good bones’… it’s easy to do good design ✨ Some of my favorite projects are when we can incorporate original features of the home with elevated, modern touches. I like to say we use “high” and “low” elements to ground a space, but then add a touch of eclecticism 🤓 Interior Design: @jaccardinteriors Photography: @nataliarobertphoto #livingroomdesign #livingroominspo #livingroomdecor #homesweethome #homeinspo #livingroom #historichome #houseenvy #craftsman #historichomes #interiordesign #thisoldhouse #sandiegointeriordesigner #missionrevival #sandiegointeriordesign #sodomino #houseinspo #smmakelifebeautiful #idcoathome #ruedaily #myhousebeautiful #housebeautiful #homewithrue #livebeautifully

Sacred Sunday: La Capilla del Gila, 1870, Florence AZ. The first Catholic Church in central Arizona was built by Fr. Andre Echallier and also served as a convent, school, parish hall and depression-era indigent housing. A new sanctuary was built adjacent to this Sonoran adobe structure in 1883 which later burned. The current Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (see following post) was built in 1911 in a hybrid Gothic/Mission Revival style. #historicflorence #arizonapreservation #missionrevival

I’ve been back home in Sydney just over a week & feel compelled to revisit the Epic. So, working backwards from the last day, here’s an ode to the fabulous Inn at Death Valley. The first pic was taken just after sunrise from the stargazing terrace. The views are endless & dreamily dramatic. They & the hotel make you feel as glam as a movie star. Marlon Brando, Clark Gable & Carole Lombard took the desert air here in their day. The hotel has been perched on a hill near Furnace Creek Wash since 1927, & was built in the Spanish Mission Revival style, my favourite. It’s so apt for the colours of the desert. Paradoxically, it was built by the Pacific Coast Borax Company. Thereby creating the initiative for a National Park at Death Valley. The 100 million dollar makeover in 2018 (by new owners, Xanterra Travel Collection) respected the original architecture & today the pool, gardens & palms are as gorgeous as the buildings. I went out on my first morning & ate a date straight off a palm tree. The restaurant’s date bread is delicious. In January the nights are cold enough for a fire. You can swim in the heated spring-water pool & warm up by the fire with a margarita. Heavenly. #nicolajwalkertravels #nicolajwalkerphotos #innatdeathvalley #xanterra #xanterratravel #xanterralife #deathvalleynationalpark #deathvalleycalifornia #furnacecreek #missionrevival #missionrevivalstyle #slow_roads #travelphotography #photography #travel #fabuloushotels #fabuloushotelsoftheworld

Like many other buildings, I ran into this one while looking for something else, which is a nice surprise. Casa De Rosa's is not unknown, but I had no idea this place existed, but it was nice learning something new. The building is located off Hoover and Adams and was designed by master architect Sumner P. Hunt who designed the Bradbury Building. The building looked so intriguing to me when i first saw the photo. The research states it's a Misson Revival style, but it looked different to me it has flavors of other architecture as well imo. It was first built in 1892, but they built a few other sections throughout the next several years. It was originally built as the first private kindergarten, which was not a concept used in Los Angeles at the time. It had many uses throughout time--a girl's collegiate school, fancy Inn, restaurant, military barrack in 1941 during WW2, and in 1950 it became the first shelter for women--Sunshine Mission, until 2000s and stayed abandoned for over a decade. I wish I had noticed it abandoned! Lol, idk why I can't picture where it's at. I don't see it on Google Maps either, so I have to drive by for this. Fast forward today, the community worked to get it restored..and it's now low income housing for veterans and their families. The building looks much newer now, but i am glad it was saved to serve good purposes. #hooverandadams #hooverstreet #missionrevival #architecturehistory #losangelesarchitecturehistory #casaderosas Sources @etandoesla (great write-up friend, your page popped up first! @laconservancy calisphere, lapl tessa, Dailytrogan.com, Laurbanize Today.usc.org

Studio work since I’ve missed the last few Monday plein-air days. I’ve been interested in architecture as an element in painting for a while and keep seeing so many interesting structures. Fantastic behind-the-scenes tour of Union Station, with its incomparable 1939 “Mission Moderne” melange of Spanish Colonial, Art Deco, and Mission Revival. The place is a sparkling jewel following its decade-long, gazillion-dollar renovation from former dumphood after years of neglect: the tiles, chandeliers, inlaid floors…all astonishing. Best of all (but unfortunately still off limits) is the exuberant former Fred Harvey restaurant designed by the iconic Mary Coulter. Coulter worked on many Harvey projects (these eateries were in every major train station. Go watch “The Harvey Girls” Judy Garland film of 1946), especially renowned in Grand Canyon National Park, and the wild combo of a Navajo-rug inflected floor with cozy deco red leather booths is absolutely sublime (not to mention the parrot tiles). Honestly, just wander through the station next time you’re hauling visitors to Felipe’s or Olvera street and check out the details, it’s such a treat. #trainstations #unionstationla #architecture #decomoderne #missionrevival #archilovers #archdaily #marycoulter #losangelesarchitecture #latourist #archdetail #deco #tilework #spanishcolonialrevival #architecturephotography #architecture_hunter

Dunbar Hotel •1928 From www.LAConservancy.org- “Built as the Hotel Somerville, the Dunbar Hotel played a key role in L.A.’s African American community for decades. Doctor John Somerville built the hotel for the first West Coast convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1928. The hotel provided first-class accommodations for African Americans in segregated Los Angeles, who were denied comparable lodging elsewhere. The hotel was a great source of pride, having been financed and built by African Americans. An instant landmark, it was considered the finest black hotel in the nation—and quickly sparked the area’s development. At the heart of the Central Avenue jazz scene, many prominent jazz musicians stayed or performed there, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, and Bessie Smith. Other notable guests included Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Hern Jefferies, Langston Hughes, Joe Louis, Arthur B. Spingarn, and W. E. B. Du Bois. The Dunbar fell into a slow decline starting in the 1960s and stood vacant for over a decade. Thomas Safran Associates and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development revived the hotel as the centerpiece of Dunbar Village, an affordable housing project for seniors and families. Reversing years of deferred maintenance and alterations, the team restored hundreds of original features with great attention to detail, while fully upgrading the building for modern use. The building’s atrium, which was enclosed years after the building was first constructed, was reopened as a communal space with skylights and replicated tiles, flooring, and a fountain in the same location as the original.” It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. #CentralAve . . . . . #missionrevival #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #brickbuilding #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #masonry #californiahistory #AmericanHistory #Jazzhistory #spanishstyle #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #blackarchitecture #blackhistory

Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company •1928• James H. Garrott, Louis Blodgett From Wikipedia- “The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building was built in 1928 and for many years housed one of Los Angeles’s most successful African American-owned businesses, the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. The building is located in the heart of the city’s Central Avenue commercial district that was a center of the jazz world in the 1930s and 1940s. The two-story building was designed by architect James H. Garrott and constructed by Louis Blodgett (both African Americans) in the Mission Revival style. The company occupied the second floor, while the first floor was rented out to local merchants. In 1949, the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company moved to its new headquarters in West Adams, now also an historic building.” National Register of Historic Places No. 98000712 #CentralAve . . . . . #missionrevival #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #missionstyle #californiahistory #AmericanHistory #WesternHistory #spanishstyle #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #blackarchitecture #blackhistory #southla #africanamericanhistory #southcentral

San Antonio's Military Legacy: A Blueprint for Residential Charm San Antonio's rich military history has left an indelible mark on its residential architecture. From Spanish Colonial influences to adaptive reuse of military structures, the city's homes are a testament to its storied past. Spanish Colonial Aesthetics: The enduring legacy of Spanish colonization is evident in San Antonio's residential architecture. Arched doorways, adobe walls, and clay tile roofs reflect the city's Spanish heritage, creating a timeless and elegant atmosphere. Mission Revival Style: Inspired by the iconic missions, the Mission Revival style is a prominent feature in many homes. Decorative tiles, bell towers, and arched openings pay homage to the city's religious and military history. Adaptive Reuse: Former military barracks repurposed into homes showcase the city's commitment to preserving history. The adaptive reuse seamlessly integrates the austere beauty of military architecture with modern living spaces. Urban Planning: San Antonio's street grid pattern, influenced by military considerations, contributes to the city's organized charm. This intentional design reflects the resilience and foresight embedded in its military history. San Antonio's residential architecture serves as a living tribute to its military legacy, preserving the valor and vision of the past while providing a unique and charming backdrop for modern life. #SanAntonioHistory #MilitaryArchitecture #SpanishColonialStyle #MissionRevival #AdaptiveReuse #HistoricHomes #TexanHeritage #UrbanPlanning #ArchitecturalLegacy #HomeDesign #TexasHistory #ResidentialCharm #AlamoInfluence #MilitaryPast #LivingHistory

Santa Barbara Main PO. 💌 My photo doesn’t quite do it justice, but it is one of the more architecturally significant buildings in downtown Santa Barbara. It was designed in the 1930s by a Pasadena architect, Reginald Johnson, who enjoyed Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival styles, but also incorporated Art Deco elements in his architecture (if you zoom in, you can see chevron detail and bronze doors). 💛 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Stamp selection-wise — not the most exciting, but I got some Holiday Elves 🎁 and Hubble Telescope 🔭 stamps in what was probably my final postal purchase of the year, since the weekend and New Year are here! ☺️ #history #architecture #postalbuilding #postalheritage #mail #snailmail #snailmailers #postallove #snailmaillove #sendmoremail #happymail #postoffice #postalservice #mailbox #postbox #nationalregister #historicplaces #artdeco #spanishcolonial #missionrevival
