Earlier this month I had the opportunity to direct a short film for the @disabilityfilmchallenge when my dear friend @eileengrubba asked me to join her team as the director. Similar to the 48hr Film Challenge, you have 5 days to write, Shoot, and edit a short film, with certain required story elements. This year's genre was Buddy Comedy. The Great Cosmic Hoax tells the story of the two disabled friends responsible for all the recent alien sightings. Their world gets turned upside down when they discover aliens might not be as fake as they thought. Meet our Director, Co-Writer, Editor, and Producer Nick Muhlbach! 1. Introduce yourself! My name is Nick Muhlbach, I am a director, producer, and video editor from Cleveland, Ohio. I recently have delved more into the idea of writing a bit more, Class Act being one of the first completed projects in a very long time for myself. 2. How did you come up with the idea for Class Act? I think the idea spawned from the idea of writing what you know. Addie and I sat down to really flesh out what we wanted to do for the story, and it really developed when we started to talk about real experiences Addie had. 3. What’s your favorite scene to watch? Watching back on it, from page to screen, some of the comedic gags such as the Milo the Mime scene, as well as the comic book scene really came together. 4. How did you get into writing? It all spawned from a lot of places. I’ve always had trouble getting my words to the page, I can put my ideas to paper, but can’t really put them to script. I have been buckling down a bit more and I am really proud of myself for that. 5. Have you done a challenge like this before? I have done multiple film challenges before, they all sort of teach you different things. For example, the 48 hour film project teaches you time management, which is incredibly helpful when expanded to five days for the competitions such as the film challenge. 6. What was your favorite scene to film? I think the hectic classroom scene is something I am very proud of, truly more for the fact that we created quite the fun scene with such an amazing group of people. It was one of the best representations of everyone involved with the movie together. 7. Why should people watch Class Act? People should watch Class Act because it is a representative film with amazing talent, as well as a great story and a great buddy comedy. I still can’t fully articulate it, but being a part of the disability community has been the most empowering thing I could’ve ever asked for. Getting to know creatives with disabilities has given me the courage to try to make it in an industry, that often feels like it isn’t made for me. Find on YouTube! We wrote this film in one night, shot it in 2 days, edited picture, sound, music and delivered in 5 days total, from start to finish, WITH NO FUNDING! We borrowed all of our talent, resources, locations, crew and only paid for equipment rentals and crafty. Imagine what we could create with time & money?! As part of autism awareness month, I share with you my new short film that exposes the reality that many young people face when reaching adulthood. This short film was created in 5 days, pre-production, production and post-production for the Esaterseals Disability Film Challenge competition. This competition provides a forum to transform the way disabilities are projected in the media. As you know, I am studying acting, script writing and film direction in Los Angeles, California. One of my main goals is to ensure that more Puerto Rican autistic voices can express themselves in Hollywood.
