I’ll admit, a grand Buddhist Dharma Wheel was not something that I thought I’d see in the midst of the Flathead Reservation of Northern Montana, but there it is. 🤷 And it’s quite impressive. It is well worth the stop when heading north to Glacier National Park. @visitmontana has a far better description of it than I could cobble together, so here goes: 🪷The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas aligns positive properties of the physical world in a sacred architectural arrangement based on the eight-spoked Dharma wheel. This symbol evokes the turning or awakening of the enlightened qualities of altruism and wisdom. The purpose of the Garden is to bring about positive transformation within those who visit, in response to the negativity that abounds in the world today. One thousand hand-cast Buddha statues are arrayed around the central figure of Yum Chenmo, or the Great Mother, the manifestation of the perfection of wisdom. One thousand stupas, representations of the enlightened mind, line the outer circle. Each enshrine an image of the female deity, Tara. Truly in awe of Glacier National Park. I am so grateful that we have such beauty accessible to us in this nation. The past week has been by far one of my most memorable travel experiences. It is a small promontory with dramatic views of the Western portion of the Lake. Also, unlike so many stops along Going To The Sun Road, it has plenty of parking, a rarity in this park. Western Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid The flowers of the western rattlesnake plantain orchid are quite nondescript for an orchid, but up close they are quite beautiful. Unlike other Goodyera orchid species that all look somewhat similar to each other, Goodyera oblongifolia's flowers all tend to face the same direction on the flowering stalk, which appears about mid to late summer, depending on the longitude, altitude and local climate. Each tiny flower is hermaphroditic, meaning they have both female and male parts and most often pollinated by bumble bees. These were found and photographed in Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. Western Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid Despite the unusual name, the western rattlesnake plantain orchid has nothing to do with rattlesnakes other than that some of the leaves of orchids in the Goodyera genus can sometimes have such elaborate white-veined patterns on their dark green leaves, especially around mid-rib that they appear to resemble snake skin. As in many naming cases, once an old common or folk name gets established, then is often here to stay. These immature plants in Northern Montana will most likely put out their first flower stalks in the next year or two. Just returned from an incredible week together in the Flathead Lake region of Montana, near Kalispell, Whitefish and Glacier NP. The place we rented had this amazing view and every morning we could see the sun rise over the mountains that make up part of Glacier and bring the lake to life. We went to one of Montana’s best kept secrets - The National Bison Range run by the Salish and Kootenai Tribes and had some pretty close encounters with our fluffy friends and even had another bear on our trail for one of our hikes. We went to Glacier NP although thanks to the new rules for the park requiring reservations we were limited in what we saw so we made up for that by stopping at Glacier Distillers and trying some of the locally made spirits. Our place was on the water and came with kayaks so we got to spend time on the lake (which is crystal clear) and saw osprey and bald eagles as they dove for fish. Any time the 4 of us can be together it is time we treasure but after having spent the week seeing much of Montana I think we all agreed that it is truly exceptional in its natural beauty.
