We found the Rabbit Lake old growth in Temagami! Old growths are unique because they haven’t been logged. They aren’t just about massive trees but also dead logs that breed their own ecosystems, moss and lichen covering the forest floor, thick top soil and trees with fire scars that tell tales of resilience. To me the magic of an old-growth forests is the biodiversity and refuge they provide to species at risk. #oldgrowthforest #temagami #canoeontario #ontarioconservation #temagamiontario #oldgrowth #oldgrowthontario

'MORNING STROLL' - Wild Turkey (male) /Oil on prepared panel / 16" x 12" In the late 1980's I worked closely with the OFAH and the Ontario Provincial government in a program to reintroduce the Wild Turkey into the province. An exchange of Minnesota Wild Turkeys for Ontario Moose formed the heart of the project, as was a fun-raising effort to offset costs. To that end I created a painting called Ontario Homecoming which featured a flock of turkeys, and a limited edition of it was sold in support of the efforts to bring back a bird once native to this part of Canada. It was very exciting to be able to witness the release of the birds, and, as time went by, to also realize just how successful it turned out. This painting was done in 2002, during a time in which wild turkeys were becoming fairly commonplace sightings, with some even venturing into our backyard to pick up seed from our feeders. #michaeldumasartist #michaeldumas #MichaelDumas #beautifulart #canadianart #canadianartist #contemporaryrealism #contemporarycanadianart #contemporaryfineart #fineartrealism #masterartist #oilpainting #fineartoilpainting #oilonpanel #birdart #beautifulbird #observationalart #wildlifeconservation #wildturkey #OFAH #ontarioconservation #beautifulturkey #reintroducedspecies #wildturkeyproject #gorgeousbird #backyardbirds #maleturkey #irridecentfeathers #atmospheric #warmandcool

The king of the playground. One cold night at the end of last summer Ofelia and I visited a beautiful playground located in the Shamadon Resort in Ayton Ontario. On top of the playground lives a majestic old tiger, resting on top of a rock that oversees the playground. This cold night, he was quiet and sorrowful. Bathing under the moonlight, we could see the tiger’s scars covering his body… they tell the story of many hardships. He still remembered when he was young and determined and could see how different things were now; ancient and exhausted, a relic of better times. We could feel his lone despair cutting through the dark air, and tears flowed through our souls. Ofelia shared the pain on his soul. She climbed the mountain and slowly hugged him. I quietly sat next to her and looked and the stars… The warm light gave our tiger some much needed hope… Maybe, there was still another chapter to be written on his story… Ofelia and I thanked the stars and exchanged sad smiles… we were going to miss our beautiful friend. We climbed down the rock and decided to keep this memory forever. I captured the instant with my trusty Lumix G95 camera... a moment that will last a lifetime… A sorrowful goodbye that we hope will turn into a see you later. Ofelia and I looked at the stars and our tiger friend one more time… we waved and disappeared into the darkness… Love, Ofelia and Raul #ayton #southernontario #shamadonresort #panasoniclumix #panasoniccanada #photography #ontariocanadaphotography #ontarioconservation #discoverontario @imagesofcanada #ontario #canada #longbeforeus #shotonlumix

The veil One cold morning, I walked between light and shadows, engulfed in a sad veil of reflection. As I approached the Pier, the veil that covered my eyes parted and I could see some souls that were lost in an instant, looking for respite. I felt my soul connecting with all those souls and reflected about all the small moments of our daily lives, so many of them turned into nothing and disappearing without a trace. My melancholic soul thought about this moment in particular, a memory that may provide curiosity decades into the future or just may fade away. So many unresolved questions... Will people understand the feeling captured in this instant? Will our soul who by then will be lost in travels, remember? Will our collective memory fade away? I looked down with teary eyes, somewhat confused and felt the need to use my trusty Lumix G95 and record this instant, hoping that those souls and my own can keep a memory that hopefully will live forever... only time will tell. I had an awesome day yesterday at the Niagara Children's Water Festival as a high school volunteer! There were hundreds of grade 3s and 4s who arrived on the Brock University campus to learn all about our waterways and natural resources. I was fortunate enough to help out at the fishing booth and talk about conservation in Ontario. I also got to teach the kids how to cast a push-button combo. It was amazing to see how many kids were eager to learn and how many kids already knew so much about fishing in Ontario! I'm super grateful I got the opportunity to help out at this amazing event. Last week, my friends Simone, Theresa, and I (the wild adventurers) rushed in the middle of the night, braving harsh winds, cloudy skies, and cold temperatures. We travelled north, met some cute deer, escaped from what looked like a voracious doggo and finally reached Luther Marsh, a breathtaking haven nested in Luther’s Lake in Southern Ontario, Canada. After some time spent exploring the area, we stood in front on the marsh to admire the view while listening to a lonely duck sing a broken song. Lady Artemis herself, who accompanied us all night blessed us with a gift. For a few seconds, the clouds parted the sky and allowed us to see a few stars twinkle. We admired the beauty of that moment while basking on her eternal hug of warmth and light… With my old and trusty @lumix G95 camera I recorded that instant, a peaceful moment etched in our collective memories. Italic text reads “Moss and Lichen, part 2” Photo ID 2: Text reads “Lichen is a critical resource for many; nesting material for Bird, food source for Caribou, house for Invertebrates.” Beside the paragraph is a photo of a tree covered in lichen. Photo ID 3: Text reads “Lichen is the product of a symbiotic relationship between a Fungus and an Algae or Cyanobacteria. Fungus provides the habitat for Algae to grow, and in exchange Algae provides food for Fungus. The species that are partnered with cyanobacteria can convert nitrogen to be bioavailable for the forest. Lichen’s work often goes unnoticed because it can’t be seen.” Surrounding the text are two photos of moss and lichen. At the very bottom is a reference in small text. Photo ID 4: A closeup of bright green moss, black fungi and black lichen together, covering a surface. Text reads “Can you identify which is moss, which is fungi and which is lichen in this image?”

On my most recent visit down to the park, as always, I visited Franks shrine & plaque, though something about this day felt different. The skies were foggy, the air was crisp and something about the trees and small light patches gave off a nostalgic energy. Like many times before, I found myself day dreaming about what life was like for Frank, the hardships and incredible experiences he accomplished, the people he had met, and the skills he learned. Envisioning all the bass caught and backcountry meals made, with other guides and guests huddled around a campfire watching him in awe as he teaches them what he’s learnt. Something about this day made me question to myself, “I wonder if he, or who else, has walked along this trail before me? I wonder what experiences they have had” it intrigued me, as I walked down the same trails we all love. My most recent visit to the park, I visited Franks shrine and plaque, although this time something about the day felt exciting, new, intriguing. This day I was reminded of where we all come from, the Earth, and how many people before myself: loved, cared and protected it with their whole beings. As said wisely by Frank, “It’s the land that connects everybody together ya know”

@brockugeotour visited the @npca_ontario - Morgan’s Point Conservation Area in the chilly weather on Wednesday. The conservation area (CA) is approximately a 30 minute drive from the @brockuniversity main campus. The CA is on the south coast of the Niagara Region (north shore of Lake Erie), and about 8km west of Port Colborne. The site has the remnants of Oak Savannah Prairie ecosystem that historically covered larger areas of the Niagara Peninsula. The shoreline along Lake Erie consists of exposed Paleozoic bedrock which is buried at the back of the ‘beach’ by gravel and cobble material. Landward of the gravel and cobble beach are forested sand dunes. The forest cover includes Sugar Maple and Black Walnut trees. The NPCA has constructed a boardwalk to minimize human impact to the sensitive environment of the coastal dunes - please stay on the boardwalk, on the designated trail and out of the dunes. The bedrock along the shoreline is part of the Onondaga Formation which is a fossiliferous limestone with some shale. The exposure is part of the Edgecliff member which the Ontario Division of Mines (1974) Paleozoic Geology of the Welland-Fort Erie Area (Preliminary Map P.989) identifies the member as “medium bedded, variably cherty, very fossiliferous, bioplastic or argillaceous limestone; massive, biohermal and reefal limestone; minor shale.” There were also large numbers of shells of the invasive zebra mussel along the coast. . . . #NPCA #niagara #niagararegion #niagarapeninsulaconservationauthority #MorgansPointConservationArea #ontarioconservation #conservationarea #geography
