No great thing is created suddenly . My clients do need to put a lot of faith in me . Especially when you plant a border in the depth of winter with boxes of roots and pots of dead looking twigs . Bags of what look like pickling onions and bad smelling mushroom compost ! But look at it now ! Second year and the clumps are joining up and the wondrous allium sphaerocephalum are multiplying . The iris siberica flower well but don’t reach the height they do in other soils . Penstemon mother of Pearl NOT sour grapes or is it Stapleford Gem see bottom of post My must have penstemon the colouring is subtle and just like the shell appears different according to the light. In bright light the wands of tubular flowers glow a blue white . Here they are in dappled shade on the cusp of being too dark. Harmonising with Salvia caradonna and Rose Eye of the Storm. Treat Penstemon as short lived perennials by year 3 best to take a few cuttings and replace the plant in the spring . They build up a woody base which is ugly and the plants vigour is depleted. Dead head regularly to keep the blooms coming . Leave the growth through the winter and then prune to fat buds near the base in March and stand back ! I should add that for years and I see the muddle still continues, this cv has been called Sour Grapes which is a catchy name for sure . Sour grapes is actually a small but lovely purple flower . If you google sour grapes you will see the muddle and then there are seed raised mother of Pearls which are quite inferior . Then there is Stapleford Gem which could be bluer than this or maybe not !! Another of my recommendations for border planting, mixing into a naturalistic planting, so much more than a cut flower . A long season of flowering starting in June through to the frosts. Using theses dark colours in a planting creates instant drama and sets the other colours off, I use knautia Macedonia in the same way . Today I am In my cotswolds garden where they had a week of -5 at night . So I was keen to see how the dahlias were . Planted as growing plants they were shallow , and here and there the top most tubers were soft destroyed by the frost. Underneath though nice fat tubers. Dahlia twynings after eight So is it wrong that many of my planting schemes are dreams ? With the warmer winters, even though it is cold right now. In the south west the ground is on average warmer and so Dahlias can be left in situ. I wanted to experiment with them to provide reliable late summer colour in my naturalistic plantings . @kellydnorris highlighted the use of Penstemon pochahontas which also has black foliage and creates a great effect in painterly planting schemes. Like the shadows in an impressionists painting the dark leaves provide depth to the plantings and highlight the neighbouring plants. These plants were planted from 9cm provided by @howardnurseries planted in January and here pictured in August the same year. I am delighted with this rendition of my dream and this dahlia is number 1 on my list . The Buzz word in planting design ..... texture Flower ..... Erygium yuccifloium, pervoskia Blue spire, salvia caradonna and calamagristis overdam A dynamic planting is one that harmonises in colour but with varied forms . Solid round balls of the erygium with the vertical iridescent blue of the pervoskia. The constantly moving fluff of the calamagrostis fill the spaces. The ever giving salvia caradonna creates shadows giving depth and substance to the planting . I taught myself to paint and this changed the way I plant. For a painting to be realistic dynamic and eye catching there needs to be a balance of light and dark. Hence without the salvia caradonna at its feet the erygium wouldn’t appear so bright . The pervoskia takes that brightness and gives it colour. The calamagrostis captures the colour and stops it bleeding into the sky . The next photo shows why the planting needs to catch your eye ! The soft textures of the filigree leaves of the sambucus and the grass flowers harmonise beautifully with the slate purple flowers of the rose. Ampelodesmos is a fantastic grass and seldom seen , don’t know why. The same size as Stipa gigantea the leaves are ribbons of bright green . The flowers are more upright and lime green ageing to silver tones. There always seems to be flower heads coming or going the seed heads last for months . It is tolerant of most soils and hardy . Allium Purple Rain, Allium purple sensation, knautia macedonica and Iris siberica dreaming yellow When I first laid out this garden I started with a river of alliums comprised of 3 varieties the two listed and A Schubertii. Purple Rain has performed the best but purple sensation is getting better this year. Schubertii struggles and I wondered if the big leaves get battered by the winter winds. They come into growth before Christmas in the mild climes of Devon. Then we get evil north east winds most springs. This year the knautia has seeded between them. The garden is managed by artistically weeding. The knautia, orange poppies and Patrinia are allowed to move through the drift plantings harmonising the whole. This white iris is Startling this year, the groups have really bulked up in the 3 years since they were planted as bare root from @howardnurseries . A stellar plant the foliage is great tall and ribbon like and the seed heads darken to a rich brown lasting till the new year . Phrase.....Blurring the boundaries Flower..... Iris siberica Gulls Wing I have been puzzling for far too long on how to finish this garden. Thinking that silver would fade into the distance with the wall and the sea , only kinda worked. The silver of the eleagnus quicksilver in fact sparkled in the sun and foreshortened this corner. Whilst trawling the stock list from @beaverplantsltd I found this sumptuous Siberian Iris. With a name like that how could I not use it. The blue green leaves are just perfect for creating shadows and depth against the silver they merge into the braken on the cliff and the sea beyond. When it flowers those pure white flowers will dance over the waves and bring full circle the planting of blue and white irises already growing further back in the garden. Phrase.... In the wings Flower...... Lychnis chalcedonica ‘Carnea’ To keep a planting fresh and vibrant I always need a plant waiting in the wings to take over. The June /July changeover can be a tricky time the roses are over thier first flush the alliums have browned and the late summer performers aren’t quite ready. So I have been trying out this Lychnis and only in its second year it is performing well, a subtle colour granted but it is a colour pop against the calamagrostis overdam. Hasn’t needed staking which is quite impressive after the week of gales we have had . Also it doesn’t take a lot of ground room it doesn’t have lots of basal leaves that would smother its neighbours.
