The "Shaggy parasol" is the common name for three closely related species of mushroom, Chlorophyllum rhacodes (or rachodes), C. olivieri and C. brunneum. Shown here are C. olivieri which are fruiting right now in our area. These mushrooms all have a white spore print. The shaggy parasol is considered an edible mushroom, however it looks almost identical to the poisonous Chlorophyllum molybdites (aka the "Green Spored Parasol") which is the mushroom that causes the most poisonings in North America annually. For this reason, Shaggy parasol mushrooms are not recommended for inexperienced hunters.

Fungi or tiny umbrella? 🍄 ☂️ What if we said it’s both? This is a parasol fungi Macrolepiota procera! The parasol is one of our largest agarics, that is a fungi with a stem and cap, reaching, and occasionally exceeding, 25cm in diameter and 30cm in height. It is a fairly common species on well-drained soils. And, is found solitary or in groups and fairy rings in pastures and occasionally in woodland 🌳 🌲 The whole fungus is cream in colour with the cap covered in brownish velvety scales which are smaller and darker near the centre. The gills are white and the brown-marked stem bears a prominent double ring.

Fungi finds No.19: Parasol Fungus (Macrolepiota Procera)... or perhaps some type of Agaric?? 🤔 **Does anyone have any alternative thoughts on ID for this magnificent fungi? I have been toying with the idea that it is in fact a member of the Agaricus genus and wondered if there were any mycology experts that could help?** Initially when I found this Parasol fungus, I thought that I had stumbled across a Shaggy Parasol and proceeded to do a little happy dance 🕺🏼..sadly my moves were a little premature, as I soon learned of my mistake ..such is life as a mycology novice! 🤦🏼♀️ I found this particular specimen out on open heathland, surrounded by numerous Dung Roundheads (which I posted about earlier this week). The Parasol is widely accepted as being an edible mushroom, but despite the fact that I am not someone who picks mushrooms, I definitely would not have been tempted in this case, as the parasol was growing on open grassland, which forms part of a nature reserve. Whilst on a National Nature Reserve in Britain, it is an offence to pick wildflowers or fungi without special permission (which may be granted for research purposes). Foraging fungi for a recipe, doesn’t qualify as scientific research although many often choose to overlook this 🤨 As the common name suggests, the open cap mimics the familiar shape of a parasol. Initially they are spherical and pale brown, with a darker brown area near the crown that breaks into scales. The cap expends as it matures, until it is flat with a small central bump, known as an umbo. The stem is smooth and white-cream, sometimes decorated with small brown scales that often give it a snakeskin appearance. This particular specimen showed signs of a trauma to one side, which allowed me to see inside the stem - which had white flesh that was tough and fibrous. The stem is bulbous at the base and tapers inwards slightly towards the apex where you see a ring. The rings on Parasols often end up detaching themselves, enabling you to move them freely up and down the stem! All in all, a pretty funky fungi!⛱

Waiting for some more red and fallow stag rut activity yesterday I lay down to rest (has anyone else found their big camera, 500 lens and tripod has put on a lot of weight since lockdown?) and came eye to eye with a snake. Actually the snake like skin and head of Macrolepiota procera - the Parasol mushroom - called Snake's Head fungus in some countries and much prized as a culinary treat (providing you are an expert mushroom forager). By a nearby mole hill, another showed how it gets its umbrella like name - you can see the collar on the stem from where the canopy has sprung open. The knob on the top of the unbrella - like the boss on a shield - is called an umbo. A quick phone photo or two and then up as more bellows and barks announced the arrival of another testosterone charged stag.
