Partridge berries - a delicious and must try on the East Coast! They can be found commonly on rocky outcrops dappled between lichens. You can make jams, pies, tea, and liqueur. Almost any meal you have, you can add them in. There was a large and productive spot for foraging these berries in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and it was the favouite spot for Labradorians! During WW11, the Air Force decided to build a base directly on top of the field, of course. A couple of years back, however, an event was happening, and a partridge berry pie was a traditional MUST. The Air Force base granted special permission for some people to harvest the berries in between the air fields. It’s partridge berry season back home in Newfoundland. (Lingonberry to those who don’t come from home). My folks have been out picking bucket loads (salt meat buckets of course) for winter jams, cookies and pies. I haven’t been home for partridge berry season in years. I’m gonna have to add a third date to my annual visits the island next year. Partridge berries (Mitchella repens). If you hike in the eastern half of North America (US or Canada), you've almost certainly seen these native, shade-loving evergreen plants. In the first picture, you can see the growth habit, leaf features, flowers, immature fruit, and ripe fruit. Each flower in the pair has a distinct form: one features a short pistil and long stamen while the other features a long pistil and short stamen. This dimorphic structure prevents self-fertilization AND leads to the single easiest way to identify a partridge berry… the fruit. Due to their unique flower structure, each berry is actually two fused/conjoined ovaries, hence the two "eyes" visible on the surface. Yes, they're edible, but certainly not the most delicious fruit. Slightly pithy texture with mild wintergreen flavor, but they make a beautiful garnish on salads and other dishes. In the southeast, you can forage partridge berries all year long, but they're most prolific from fall through late winter. Despite our lackluster description, if your toddler is like ours, they'll go crazy for partridge berries regardless and spend half their hike eating the berries.
