Every once in awhile I test my patience on the golf course. People say patience is like a muscle the more you use it the stronger it becomes. In medicine and surgery you never know when you are going to need to flex the patience muscle, so it's good to keep exercising it all the time. Today, we learned about bats. Did you know that bats are the only flying mammal? The largest bats is the Flying Fox - it has a wingspan of 6 feet. The smallest bat is the bumblebee bat - it's about the size of a human thumb! How cute!!! . . We learned about sound waves and how they travel through matter. We started our bird unit last week. We talked about how the birds are actively migrating south for the winter and how their food sources are slowly dwindling as the season progresses. We discussed how humans can help their feathered friends stay energized by feeding them seeds and nuts that are high in protein. . . For our activity, we built bird houses from recycled goods like milk and egg cartons, yogurt containers and gourds from the fall season. . In today's episode of why I like to homeschool: we learned about the Native American history of Maple syrup and Maple tapping. We discussed how like humans - who have veins and arteries to carry blood and nutrients through the body, trees have xylem and phloem that pump sap and nutrients throughout the tree. (We are lot more alike than we may know). . . We segwayed into a discussion about evaporation and the water cycle (did you know it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of Maple syrup?!) We talked about water molecules and what happens to them in the transition between the different states of matter. . . Why I love homeschooling: because you can take advantage of your children's natural interest in topics and build on it without forcing it. . Math books for my 1st grader have these question where the child figures our the number in an equation without actually explaining mathematically what an equation is ot what the equals sign means. . And then when said child goes to middle school we have to teach them the concept of algebra and solving for x, but we have made the concept foreign. So our minds are boggled as to why they just don't get it.....it's because we thought they weren't smart enough. . I am telling you....they are smart enough. Kids are capable of far more than we give them credit for. We just have to give them opportunity, time and experience. It's been a week. 2 years later and Covid hit our house. I'm convinced that it's not about IF but about WHEN you will catch it. I mean, we homeschool, have been socially distancing and only socialize with a very small circle of friends and are very open about when we have any types of symptoms. . . My husband and I are fully vaccinated and boosted and our 7 year old has been vaccinated as well. The other 2 are too young unfortunately. My middle son is the only one who tested positive. The baby is still breastfed (I guess I passed down some antibodies). . . People say children have "mild" symptoms. My son had fevers as high as 103, vomiting, diarrhea and has lost a significant amount of weight. It's been a week. Got a bunch of leftover rice? Well, I did. I tend to make way too much rice and end up with leftovers. I'm always looking for new ways to revamp leftovers and pimit waste. . . Today, my kiddos and I whipped up some very tasty, restaurant-style shrimp fried rice for lunch. . The boys pealed and chopped carrots. Bellpepper,, an Onion and garlic. That I sautรฉed in in some butter until tender but not soggy. . I pushed the sautรฉed veggies to one side and cooked some deveined shrimp on the other side of the pot (then I removed them into a bowl). . Next dump in your left over rice cold, throw In some sesame oil, a few tablespoons of soy sauce and a teaspoon of ๐ค shrimp paste and mix to combine (don't skip the paste,it elevates this dishe). . Again, slide the rice and veggies to on side of the pan and on the other, throw in a few cracked and scrambled eggs. Once the eggs are cooked, combine with your rice and throw in your cookee shrimp. . Serve warm. It's delicious, the kids loved helping with cooking and eating it and it's a greT way to reduce food waste! I love tattered jeans. I bought these specifically for the rips and tears, but after every wash, the holes got bigger. So, I decided it was time to patch them. I used the Japanese method of shashiko to mend these jeans but also keep their worn in charm and I'm so in love with they way they turned out! . . We painted peg dolls today for our social studies lesson. We learned about different skin colors, melanin, the relationship of the sun and the equator and the skin as an organ. . Tuning fine and gross motor skills by pealing and chopping onions. . My boys love being in the kitchen. Naturally, as a homeschooling mama I use this love as an opportunity to teach them valuable life skills: safety, cleaning up after yourself, being able to measure and understanding uniformity, shapes and patterns. Learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. . My 4 year old doesn't have the strongest hand muscles..he holds his pencils rather loosely and his writing is still kinda scribbly. Initially I stressed about this until I realized there are other ways outside of writing and repetitive pencil skills that can strengthen these muscles. Enter: ceramics, painting, and cooking. Nature and a good book! . . Our school schedule has been wierd. We got sick and took a break for a while. That's the beauty of homeschool. So today, I decided to ease back into it. We headed to a natural play area at one of the @cbusmetroparks, the kids climbed and shook their wiggles out and then we pitched our hammock and read about the Indigenous Nations. I haven't posted in a while. It's been crazy busy and I've been rushing to get things organized and ready for our 2nd official homeschool year. . I don't know why, but this year I'm more nervous about being able to meet all standards for learning while also making it a funa and rewarding experience. So I have been occupied with planning lessons and activities, filling up my calendar with plans, highlighting and post-it noting...all good things, but my kids are noticing my physical presence and my mental absence and it's been showing in their incessant arguing, fighting and lack of listening and respect. . Bad behavior is not a sign of a bad child....its usually a cry for something that the child can't otherwisearticulate in words (to be fair, most adults can't either)....like the attention of a caregiver. . The timeouts for 'misbehavior' don't work, shouting helps no one and really I want a healing environment in my home and homeschool. So today we made therapy putty, scented with lavender ๐. So the next time they get out of hand they can have some soothing sensory play in a quiet space while they think of better ways to tackle their differences. . Less is more. This is true in almost every aspect of life. . My mantra for food is, "everything in moderation". Too much salad and you're going to be spending the day in the bathroom. Too much sugar and you'll end up with a headache and stomach ache. Too much gym time and you might hurt yourself. EVERYTHING. IN. MODERATION. . Here is a photo of my children's playroom. I hope I am not gynxing the situation by sharing this, but this weekend I purged like our lives depended on it and we organized. Every type of toy has a box. Dinosaurs in one box, cars in another. Since this weekend's purge, my children have enjoyed playing with their toys. They seem happier with less - and I screem WAY LESS. . Children are happy with very little. When I was a kid, I remember very few toys in my house, but I remember playing for hours without boredom. . So why do kids beg for toys when we go shopping? Consumerism starts very early. Commercials push the idea of the next coolest toy after every after school special. And then there are birthdays and other holidays that have come with the expectation of gifts in toy form. And before you know it, your home becomes a storage unit for every car Tonka ever made and kids who are bored out of their mind and a mama who is unhappy. . It wasn't easy to convince my kids to purge, but I told them that there are children who's parents cannot buy them toys and that it would be very nice if we could share some of our toys with them. Initially, it was like pulling teeth but eventually they really got into it. If there was a toy they had strong reservations about donating, I allowed them to keep it. Remember, this is meant to be an enjoyable lesson, one that makes them feel good about making a difference, not feel resentment. . As the new school year is beginning, I hope to instill anti-consumerism in my children. I hope to teach them that they don't need more toys and that what they have is enough. Does this mean I won't buy them gifts? Not at all, we love books....literally LOVE. We love art ๐จ. We love visiting museums and the zoo and nature and camping and having experiences together. . Day 4 pt. 1: This was an adventure-packed day. . We woke up early and quickly packed up camp ๐. We would stay one more day, but we needed to move sites since the one we have been at for the last couple days was reserved by someone else. Once packed, we headed to Munising to board a boat for a tour around Lake Superior to view the beautiful Pictured Rocks. The rocks get their name from the beautiful picturesque mineral striations. Ironically, pictures don't do this place justice. . I was in absolute awe of God's beautiful creation. . When I am in mostly uninhabited places in America, I often think of the Natives of this land - who they were, how they lived off of the land, what they went through and where they are now. I try to teach my children that before we got here, there were entire civilizations of people who called this place home. . When we returned from the tour, we headed to the small gift shop near the dock and we bought the kids patches to help them start a small collection in order to mark every place they've visited. This weekend, we celebrated my second born. Words cannot sum up the happiness this little boy has brought into our home. His smile lights up any room he walks into and if that doesn't do it for you, wait for the tight loving hugs he gives. If you're lucky enough to have a conversation with him, he will instantly win you over. . . He is a force to be reckoned with, and he pushes me to the brink of insanity before lovingly forcing his body toward me for hugs, kisses and squeezes. He is the child I can never get mad at because even in his mischief he is just so darn cute. . . He has the heart of a saint, full of love. If you ever wrong him, a simple apology will fix it all and he will verbally assure you "it's okay, I know you didn't mean to." There is not an ounce of malice in him. Day 4: We had plans for this day. But God had other plans. We had plans to rent a Pontoon boat and explore Lake Superior and her majestic rock formations. Unfortunately, the wind conditions were not safe and the company cancelled our reservations. I was a little bummed out as I had grand plans to photograph the beautiful geological structures and frame them for the house. . . On to Plan B: Since we had already packed a lunch in anticipation of eating it on the boat,, we decided to see some rock formations and then head to a nearby lakefront beach for a picnic. First, we drove up to Miner's Castle and took some pictures there. Honestly, photos cannot do this place justice. . . While at the Miner's Castle lookout, there were a couple of rangers offering some helpful information regarding bears and how to manage confrontations with them if necessary. Johan and I read somewhere that you should play dead if attacked by a bear, but the ranger told us we should be loud and fight like hell. Let's just say that I am grateful that I have never needed to experiment with the responses! . . After Miner's Castle, we drove to Miner's Beach to eat our lunch and dip our feet in the lake. Isa enjoyed collecting some pretty rocks, Laith enjoyed building sand castles and Aydin enjoyed sensory play with the sand for the first time. . . On our way to camp, Isa told us that he wanted to camp for one more night. We quickly booked the next available site. Unfortunately we were unable to rent the site we were currently staying in, but thankfully because of the bears, everything in our camp was pretty much packed away daily except for our tents. . . Day 3: The highlight of our trip and the number one reason we travelled to Michigan was camping at Pictured Rocks. . Johan was randomly searching camping places near us (the term 'near' is used loosely) and he happened to find a blog post about #picturedrocks. The campsite is almost always booked solid. But thankfully there was random opening for 2 days that was during our vacation. He booked the site without asking and I am so glad that he did. . . After reading reviews, we learned about black biting flies. Because we have young children, we were going back and forth as to weather we wanted to risk us or them being bitten. We finally decided that we would continue with our plans to camp and if the flies were a problem, we would pack up camp and check into a hotel. . . We made sure to take a large citronella candle,, bug spray and a netted tent to protect ourselves. We also wore long sleeves and pants. Thankfully the flies were not really an issue at all! . . When we arrived at our campsite, the wind was so wild that Johan and I struggled to pitch our tent - it kept trying to blow away like a giant kite or parachute or something else that flies. Dave our awesome neighbor helped us set up. While we set up, he was telling us how impressed he was that we would camp at a primitive site with 3 kids including an infant. . . I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous to be camping with the kids without electricity, cell service or plumbing. But Johan and I were never parents that allowed the presence of our children prevent us from seeking adventures. I thought there would be complaints about wanting to watch TV, but there weren't. . . The kids dug up rocks, collected sticks and leaves and used them to create makeshift buildings and cities. They observed bugs ๐, chased birds and got dirty. . . I was sure to pack a @petethecatofficial story book to read to the boys before bed. On our second day we hopped on a Ferry to Mackinac Island. It was an experience like no other. Being on the island is like stepping back in time. There are no motor vehicles on the Island, so you either get around by foot, horse or bike. We planned ahead and brought the boys' helmets with us. Isa rode with Johan on a tag-a-long while I pulled Laith and Aydin in a trailer. . We biked the perimeter which was 10 miles. It was exhausting and spectacular at the same time. I enjoyed seeing all the wild flowers and butterflies and the boys thoroughly enjoyed taking frequent stops along Lake Huron to skip rocks. . We climbed 207 stairs to view Arc Rock and, of course, take many photos in front of it. The imagery of the rock formation against the turquoise water of the lake was breath-taking. . . Between the biking and the climbing, we had worked up an appetite. We stopped at the British Landing for some Nachos and Lemonade which we enjoyed beach side. . . After returning our bikes we stopped at @rybasfudge for some Fudge (duh) and Ice Cream. . We left the Island exhausted, sore and highly satisfied. I would be lying if I said the entire stay was a dream. The hotel we stayed at in Mackinac City, in my opinion was subpar. The truth is, sometimes, even after reading reviews for hotels that are 4-5 star ratings, sometimes, you end up with a lemon....that's just how vacation goes sometimes. . . The old Naadiya would have likely been annoyed for the entirety of the stay, but the new Naadiya did her best to make the most of the stay. I'd like to think that I am older and wiser. . . I will say that my boys thoroughly enjoyed the hotels water park. The Mister had vacation this week, so we decided to pack our car to the brim and head to Michigan for an adventure packed week. In all honesty, I wasn't expecting much from Michigan, but boy was I surprised! * Afyer leaving home, we made a quick stop in Dearborn for lunch. We ate at @aljoomsbbq which was a heavenly experience. I forgot the name of the burger I ordered, but I remember it being messy, juicy and the perfect combo of burger and smoked brisket. * After lunch we packed up the boys and headed to Mackinac City. The drive there was spectacular and full of open roads with back country scenes complete with numerous deer sightings and of course cattle, horses, chickens and farms. * On the way, I googled a bunch of cool facts about the wild animals we might encounter during our visit. He literally picked this cicada up and said, "hey little buddy, you can sit on my shoulder." . . I love how in love he is with them. Yesterday, my best friend and I were reminiscing about Ramadans of the past, before we were married and had kids and how we would spend our nights in the masjid, praying, reading and even studying for our exam. I've never really felt am Iman high like that since - well - ever. . I've been feeling like I have pretty much "wasted" this Ramadan. As a mother it's very easy to get caught up in the daily happenings of motherhood - cleaning, cooking, tending to the kids and conflict management that there is little time to focus on prayer and extra worship. May Allah accepts our efforts in child-rearing as a form of sadaqa kariya and ibaada. Ameen. . "If my servants ask you about Me, I am near.
