Mighty fine pre sprouting has occurred on about half the ranunculus. The other half I popped into a multipurpose compost as I'd run out of the seed compost I usually use, and they have done nothing at all. A funeral arrangement with a brief to use genuinely seasonal flowers, foliage and colour. It was a pleasure to reflect the end of autumn here and to use some beech twigs and leaves, my favourite autumn tree. . . This is a design which uses two separate flat sheaves loosely fixed together to form a double ended arrangement with a little "toupée" to cover the bare stems where they meet in the middle (picture 4). No floral foam or wire, just twigs and twine. . . The idea is that the two pieces can be separated after the service and taken away by family members. Still going....for now. I'm heading into October with an eye on night time temperatures. Some fellow flower farmers have had their first frost already and it's not just the Scottish ones either 🥺 . With that in mind, and the fact that things are starting to peter out and look slightly sad in places, I'm not offering my mini weekly/fortnightly subscriptions in October and in fact not until we get round to spring again. However I can still deliver gift bouquets in central and suburban York and I'll keep up with limited amounts of small bunches to @partisanyork and @food_circle_york as long as possible. . I'll have dried flowers in November and festive wreaths in December. I'll also be offering fresh flowers over Christmas and New Year, including fragrant narcissus from the Isles of Scilly and mistletoe from Herefordshire. I was asked to make a funeral arrangement using white flowers, lilies were mentioned. However I don't grow lilies and although I could have bought in some wonderful Lincolnshire grown lilies, I really prefer to make a rambling, relatively unstructured piece with the same variety of flower shapes, textures and fragrance I use in other work. I refer to it as a flower blanket which does sound rather twee but that's what it is. The family were willing to accept my approach as long as I gave them a very tasteful arrangement using mainly white flowers. I thought it came out well using snapdragon, aster, agapanthus, strawflower, statice, ammi, sweet pea & white marjoram on a base of beech, oak, cornus, pittosporum & eleagnus foliage all arranged in damp moss. . . . Sweet peas: one of those flowers that are more sensitive than you'd think, bearing in mind how easily they seem grow in the home flower patch. This year they've had all the weather conditions thrown at them - too cold, too hot, too wet, late frost, too dry, ridiculous wind... all of which cause issues the sweet pea grower does not like - short stems, bud drop, frost damage and general sulking. I've been debating whether to plant out the 150 or so young plants I have hanging around. They don't have a great vase life by themselves although cut on a long vine they're a good addition to a gift bouquet. Today I made flower crowns for two granddaughters and buttonholes for other family members so that everyone viewing remotely would feel part of the funeral service despite the current restrictions on numbers. While I'm lucky enough to be generally ok with life under lockdown and I'm definitely not missing the weekly wedding flower fretting, I can't deny it's good to have an actual point of focus. . With that in mind I was pleased to have a project to concentrate on yesterday. It was a large arrangement for a willow casket which is not a nice thing in itself but I was glad to be able to pick and use loads of lovely peonies, alliums, aquilegia, nigella, sweet williams, a few roses and lots of different foliage for the family to say goodbye to a garden and plant lover. Hello I see it is Garden Day today. Happy Garden Day to you all. Usually I would be 'gardening' in a professional flower farmer kind of way on a Sunday but since lockdown it's been my official day off where I have time to garden in an amateur fashion at home. I've started a vegetable garden again and today I'm going get round to sowing another few small rows of carrots and unwrapping my new telescopic loppers to tame some of the wilder bits of hedge/bramble. Investigating the lower end of my compost bin has been on the list for a few weeks too, thinking ahead to planting out my autumn squash plants. All weather permitting of course. I can see my herbs and hardy geraniums being heavily ruffled by the chilly wind and there are a few little rain spittles on the window. Maybe I'll just finally check out my basket of scented pelargoniums and order some autumn flowering chrysanthemums. If I make it into the garage to tidy up I may make the required #flowerday flower crown but then again I may not.
