A year-long journey's finale in my vase. A cutting garden was always on my mind since I could not force myself to cut the flowers from the roof terras. When a small patch at a local community garden became available I had to give it a go. The potential to grow my "wishlist", and more, was there! Obviously, I went crazy with my shopping. I wanted it all 😆 🤣 😂 I am also glad it didn't end in a divorce as the boxes kept arriving 🙃 😅 Now, they're here. Not a bulb in a box sitting in a living room for weeks-on-end awaiting the planting opportunity a.k.a a miracle of good weather. Tulips and narcissi were the biggest part of the nearly 1400 bulbs on the order (other than dahlias but that's a story for another time). 💐Friday flowers are available on the gate! We are drawing to a close our Easter holidays and it's been a balancing act of nursing, childcare and flowers! I was chatting to a patient recently about our flowers and how growing them offers me an escape. Nursing, particularly in critical care, is dictated by policies and a tiny mistake or lapse in concentration has serious consequences. Flowers are forgiving. I've learnt so much through trial and error the last few years! No year is ever the same and I'm continually trying new things. Despite owning an entire library of books, attending multiple courses and reading everything available online, there is no handbook to being a "successful flower farmer". Your soil, microclimate, funds and resources have a huge impact. I love the nurse: flower balance I have at the moment. 💚 You know those times when you buy something off the internet and you're bitterly disappointed because it's nothing like the thing that was advertised? Well this time is not one of those times. The daily plant shuffle began today.... Autumn sown seedlings and cuttings, that have survived the winter in the greenhouse, were moved outside for the first time to begin the hardening off process (I've also heard this being referred to as the toughening up process. They will be brought back into the greenhouse this evening. This process will continue for the next week or two depending on the weather. What is hardening off? All plants raised indoors or in a greenhouse need to be acclimatised to outdoor conditions before they are finally planted outside. Plants in the photos are: - 1. Happy Easter 🐣 💓 💛 A fresh batch of blooms from a personal flower shop aka "the allotment" with addition of pieris and fritillaries from the roof terras. 😀 I think this "freestyle" arranging method is my favourite as it's so versatile! You can mix and match and experiment. It's also much easier to maintain and keep "fresh". Changing water couldn't be easier and you can bring the stars to the front whilst the back rows are getting ready to open. There's more room for them to breathe and you can see them better. Nothing is too squished.
