"While Soumitra da was staying with us in London for a long period, we chose two films (DVDs) for him to see each day, first thing after breakfast and one in the evening. He wanted to watch mostly European films like Al Postino or Kolya or Melena etc. I could see the sheer joy in his his heart when he was moved by an incredible scene or dialogue! I could also see the frustrations of wanting to do more and squeeze out every bit of actor in him on screen ! I recall his words, after watching Al Pacino’s brilliant courtroom monologue again (Scent of a Woman) - ‘Why can’t someone write similar things for me in Bengali cinema’! I also recall a funny moment - he was watching ‘Love Actually’ and looking at Hugh Grant, he excitedly said - ‘আরে এই ছেলেটাকে তো আমি চিনি’!! (‘I know this chap!!’) He was so young when we worked together!
