It’s the best Adam Sandler movie by a wide margin, it’s my favorite Buscemi role, it’s one the best 90’s soundtracks, and it’s directed by the dude who gave us Heathers! It tanked hard when it was released, but luckily developed a cult following once people realized how incredible it was. As soon as my middle school self saw a TV spot for it for the first time I knew I needed to see it immediately and I was not disappointed. Every time I watch it I love it even more and as far as I’m concerned The Lone Rangers are a top 5 fake band of all time. Psycho Cop (1989, Dir. Wallace Potts). First time watch for me and my quick pitch is this is your typical 80’s slasher movie setup where a bunch of attractive coeds head out for the weekend to a remote getaway. Only the killer this time around is an insane cop who spouts cheesy one liners that would give Dr. Giggles a run for his money. The first act is a bit slow, but once the kills pick up there’s some creative death scenes and the dad joke one liners become comfort food by the time the credits roll. This is certainly not a good movie by any means, but I had a lot of fun with it and appreciated that the film knows exactly what it is and goes all in on its ridiculousness. We recently re-watched “Idiocracy” which, if you haven’t seen, is way funnier now than when it came out in 2006. It’s written/directed by Mike Judge, and is hilariously low-budget (some of the backgrounds look like drawings from a Monty Python movie). The movie posits that in the future, only stupid people are breeding, so someone sent from the past would be the smartest person in the world. Terry Crews is hysterical as the US President, chomping up the scenery. My favorite bit of movie trivia is the choice of shoes they used in the film—shoes I have loathed since I first saw them!
