We had a trip down to Preston today, and I couldn’t resist a quick snap of the iconic Pennine Tower at Lancaster (formerly Forton) Services as we drove past on our way home. Originally opened in 1965, the 65-foot tower sits alongside the M6 motorway, and is the most famous example of motorway architecture in the country. Today is #lancashireday 🌹 I love where I live ❤️ I defend the County I live to explore and the birds, wildlife and the special nature protecting I’m obsessed with. In celebration of #lancashireday today, (and from where my paternal ancestry originated), this is the Queen Victoria Memorial in Dalton Square in Lancaster. The statue faces Lancaster Town Hall and was erected in 1906. It is constructed of Portland stone and bronze, and features four bronze lions, four figurative sculptures, each depicting an allegory of Freedom, Truth, Wisdom and Justice, and four friezes of almost life-size likenesses of 53 prominent British figures from the Victorian era, including JMW Turner, Joseph Lister, Florence Nightingale, Robert Peel, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, David Livingstone and John Franklin. Pendle is well known for the Pendle Witches (or the real term for what ‘witches’ were…strong women) who were tried and executed in 1612. . Pendle used to have wolves and wild boar roaming and is full of tales and intrigue. Standing 557m above sea level it offers some amazing views and towns along the way. . Some other facts about my home county..Lancashire was the first place to spin and weave cotton and used to produce half of the worlds cotton! Food-wise, think comfort food, steaming Lancashire hotpots, tasty Lancashire cheese, butter pies (Not just a pie with butter in 😂), parched peas/black peas, black pudding, Eccles cakes are all some of the traditional Lancashire fayer. . The invention of the spinning jenny and the jet engine came from Lancashire. First place in Britain to use fingerprints as a form of forensic investigation. And the first Motorway in the UK was built here. . Hoghton Tower is the location of the sirloin steak. It is said that King James I knighted a particularly tasty bit of beef saying ‘arise Sir Loin’ and thus the name was invented 😁 and Stoneyhurt College and the beautiful landscape of the Ribble Valley said to be Inspiration for Tolkiens Lord of the Rings! . Manchester, once part of Lancashire, earned the distinction of being the world's inaugural industrial city in the early 19th century. 🏭🌍 Notably, James Labels resides on the historic site of Plantation Mill, one of Bacup's earliest mills.
