These are medieval pins. Pins have been extremely important to people throughout history. For such small and seemingly simple objects they have held great value and a profound magick of all their own. The tale of the Pendle Witches started when Alizon Device, a young woman of 17, tried to beg some pins from a pedlar. He refused to give her them. She cursed him. He fell to the ground, maimed and 'bewitched'... Little did poor Alizon know that her words had started a story which would end in the death of most of her family and which would also change history forever. We all have little objects which bring us great joy, are too useful to be without or which hold great power for us... In Alizon's time, a few pins could make the difference between being warm or cold as they were used to hold clothes together. She could use them for self defense or even to cause harm with a poppet, if indeed she ever did. Pins had the power to hold things together or take them apart, they could pierce, scratch or mend. Do you carry something in your bag, wallet or purse that you would hate to lose, cannot function without or that just has great personal significance? You might carry a stone or a lock of hair. Your essential talisman might be your earbuds or a favourite book...These connections with powerful objects are the root of folk or 'practical' magick!

Tonight, May Eve is also know as Walpurgisnacht after St Walpurga who was born in Devon, England in the 8th century. St Walpurga travelled as a missionary to Germany where she founded a monastery in Hindenheim. This is why Walpurgisnacht is a European tradition rather than an English one although it is associated with Beltane, the fire festival of May Day. Traditionally, bonfires were lit on Walpurgnisnacht as she was a saint well known for protecting against witchcraft and the fires would keep evil spirits away. At Beltane, livestock would be walked out to pasture between great bonfires to be purified and protected during the summer months. St Walpurga died in the year 777 and her tomb, even today, secretes an oil which is said to enact miraculous cures. Her relics are kept in St Peter's church, Munich. Confusingly, witches were believed to be at the height of their powers on Walpurgisnacht... They would gather at the summit of the Brocken (a mountain in the Harz range of central Germany) to hold their sabbat far from the protective bonfires of the homes and farmsteads. The feast is known as Hexannacht or Witches' Night in Bavaria. People celebrate by dressing up as witches or demons and dancing to loud music which is said to drive away the winter spirits and to drive away the witches! Angela Carter mentions Walpugisnacht in her fable, The Werewolf... here's a little extract; 'It is a northern country; they have cold weather, they have cold hearts... 'To these upland woodsmen, the Devil is as reals as you or I. More so; they have not seen us nor even know that we exist, but the Devil they glimpse often in the graveyards, those bleak and touching townships of the dead where the graves are marked with portraits of the deceased... so they put out small votive offerings, little loaves, sometimes a cake that the bears come lumbering from the margins of the forests to snatch away. At midnight, especially on Walpurgisnacht, the Devil holds picnics in the graveyards and invites the witches; then they dig up fresh corpses, and eat them.' Have you noticed how the flowers seem to emerge across the year in colour order? In January and February we see pure white snowdrops and the white cherry blossoms start to appear. Then Easter brings the yellows - dandelions, primroses and celandines followed by the blues and pinks. Have you heard the bluebells ringing? If you have, you may have heard the faeries being called to gather together in the woods - beware though - you might want to close your ears to their seductive sound... According to Martin Maudsley, the emergence of bluebells and hawthorn blossom in May portend the time for encounters with the faeries or 'the Others'. The tale of Thomas the Rhymer tells how he heard the bluebells ringing as he entered the forest and was spirited away by the Faerie Queen to her realm for seven years. Bluebells are sometimes known as deadman's bells as to hear them may mean death if not abduction! Top tip: A garland of bluebells around the neck can cause the wearer to speak the truth 🌱🌼🌿 I wonder what they sound like? Have you heard them?
📆 Happy Walpurgis Night! The festival of Walpurgis Night is named after Saint Walpurga (c. 710–777/9). Saint Walpurga (also known as Saint Walpurgis or Walburga) was born in Devon, England in A.D. 710. She studied medicine and became a Christian missionary in Germany. As well as helping people suffering from pests, rabies & whooping cough, she is also alleged to assist those in need of protection from witchcraft! 🚨🔔 NEW favourite author alert 🔔🚨 #TheFamiliars by @staceyhallsauthor is now in my top ten books I’ve EVER read. I’m in awe that this was her debut 😱 I finished it a few weeks ago and still think about it daily. I took History at A Level so I’ve always had an interest in it, but this book really blew my socks off, especially with Pendle being quite local to me in Liverpool! I’ve now got copies of her other books which I’m trying to ration because book four has only just been released, so I think I’m going to be waiting a while for my book 5 Stacey Halls fix! Walk from Pendle heritage centre in Barrowford to Roughlee. 🚗 BB9 6JQ. Car park is cheap.. free for 1st hour and then 50p per hour. Toilets and cafe at the centre. Lovely walled garden with a fairy trail. There’s a museum, which opens at 12. We walked through Barrowford park, which has a lovely lake and play area. We then walked up Pasture lane into Roughlee.. quite a steep incline. There’s so many walks around here.. there’s Pendle hill, the Pendle witch trail, weets hill, and many more. We ate at the heritage centre and we recommend it. Book review: Weyward by Emilia Hart Goodreads Rating: 4.09/5 My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ & 1/2⭐ While this has been a much hyped about debut written by Emilia Hart with the whole reader community going gaga over it, I found it falling a bit short of my expectations considering it was winner in the Historical fiction category at the Goodreads Choice Awards 2023. The premise of the story is about three women belonging to a family of witches that go through hardships in their lives because of who they are. The story is narrated from POV of these three different women and spans across three generations. In 2012, to mark the 400th anniversary of the trial and execution of the Pendle Witches, ten marker memorials were laid from @pendleheritage to Lancaster Castle, following a possible route the accused may have taken. Each marker point features a 'tercet', a three line poem, composed by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate from 2009 to 2019. Tercet No. 9 is in @williamsonpark and dedicated to Anne Whittle, perhaps more famously known as Old Chattox. Tomorrow afternoon - Saturday 20th April - at 2pm we are taking a stroll around Lancaster, looking at this famous case of witchcraft and the part the ancient county town played in their fate! At the beginning of this year a Barrowford film director @_emmaswinton and other activists of @justiceforwitches helped a petition to reach 10,000 signatures which means the government now need to act and respond to the wishes of the public. We too want to bring the story of these innocent people to life with the comission of our new opera about the Pendle Witches by composer @bencrickmusic . Pendle Hill Hike ⛰️ It was a wonderful hike up to the summit of Pendle Hill. I mentioned in an early post how I have been wanting to go to Pendle for a number of years after reading about the Pendle Witches 🖤. It's a remarkable place with a lovely feel about it. Many of the sign posts to Pendle hill have little witches embossed into them. How cool are they?! After our hike, we headed back down the hill to Barley for a well deserved drink at the Pendle Inn. Perhaps the best pub sign I've ever seen! 🧙🏼♀️ Pendle has been steeped in a sad history, due to the witch trials of 1612. I’ve been to many of them, including Pendle and Boscastle. But did you know that your tiny village might also have history? I remember finding out a few years ago that the tiny village my husband grew up in (not far from me) actually has a history of witches, and not a pleasant one (but when are these stories ever always pleasant). The local pond has a huge stone near it. I’m sure you can see where this is going. So this is just a reminder that you’re probably not too far from a piece of witch history. . Pictured is the book “Witchcraft and The Black Art. A book dealing with the Psychology and Folklore of The Witches” by J.W. Wickwar, and a handmade plate depicting a witch flying over Pendle on her broom (this was purchased from Pendle Heritage Museum!) ✨
Welcome to the haunted village of Downham, in Lancashire. Frozen in time, you will find no road markings, satellite dishes or telephone wires. The village sits quietly in the shadow of Pendle Hill, and it is this connection in which its ghost stories originate. During the trial of the witches in 1612, it is said one of the accused - Alice Nutter fled to Downham Town Hall to hide from authorities. Sadly, she was soon found and eventually hung for witchcraft. Her sad ghost is now rumoured to haunt the village, wandering across the streams whilst remaining completely dry. Do you know who your local authors are? The first slide is a picture I took of my book on a display stand at @waterstones_lancaster alongside 3 other books by local authors. Firstly, I thought this was such a wonderful thing for the staff to do, such a great show of support. I can’t describe the feeling I get every time I see the book I wrote on the shelves of the store I browsed so often as a teenager. But it also made me think about the other three books in the display and how much it might mean to the people who wrote those books, too. And how I ought to be reading them and supporting them, too. And so I bought The Familiars by Stacey Halls. I’d already heard great things about this author and her books from a mutual friend, and I am already a massive historical fiction lover. So I had more than an inkling that I’d love this book. The story is based on the Pendle witch trials. It’s impossible to grow up in Lancaster without knowing the gruesome history of Lancaster castle and its more famous residents (equally impossible to have been a teenager in the area and not to have drunk cider and been held against the castle walls on the receiving end of a blowback 😂) - witches, real life events, local history… tick, tick, tick. The book is bloody AMAZING. I started it yesterday, I finished it today. (and it’s half term, just sayin’) It’s fast paced, twisty, immersive and just a really bloody good read. I love a strong female main character and Fleetwood was up there with the best of them, as brave as it gets. If you haven’t already read this one, you should. Stacey Halls, I am your new biggest fan. It wasn't only the Witches of Pendle who were tried back in August 1612... a woman called Isobel Robey from Windle, St. Helens, three women from Samlesbury, a woman called Alice Grey and Margaret Pearson from Padiham were also arraigned at Lancaster at the same time. The three women from Samlesbury, Jane Southworth, Jennet Bierley, and Ellen Bierley were accused of witchcraft, murder and even cannibalism by Grace Sowerbutts, a local girl aided and abetted by Jesuit priest, Christopher Southworth. It was said in court that they used "diverse devillish and wicked Arts, called Witchcrafts, Inchauntments, Charmes, and Sorceries," in and upon Grace Sowerbutts! The case against the three women, Jane Southworth, a resident of Samlesbury Lower Hall, collapsed when the judge recognised that Grace was merely the pawn of the scheming priest! Samlesbury Hall is an amazing place to visit with so much history around the witches, a beheaded priest and lots of ghosts - there's even on who ruffles your hair as you pass through the rooms!
Pendle Witches 🖤 I was very lucky to visit Pendle. I read about the Pendle Witches around 5 years ago and have wanted to visit Pendle to honour the 10 who were found guilty and hanged. The Pendle Witch Trials took place in 1612 and this statue is of Alice Nutter who was one of the women killed in the trials. If you read an earlier post in which I wrote about rosemary being associated with remembrance. I took a rosemary posy I made to leave at Alice's statue to let her know we remember. There were lots of flowers and spell jars left for Alice. It was beautiful to see. 🧙🏼♀️ As an aromatherapist, forager and someone who loves nature, I see myself as a green witch. I often wonder if I would have been found guilty of being a witch. Often the people found guilty worked with nature to heal people in their community. I know a lot of people I follow on here are also nature lovers, therapists and foragers. I'm guessing many of us would have been tried as a witch. It was an absolute honour to stand next to Alice Nutter. The shop is a little tardis with narrow rows of book shelves, wooden steps and the nostalgic knowing of a house with history!
