Do You Need Carbs During Your Workout? I hope you know by now that carbs are not the enemy. Research suggests that carbs support muscle growth and performance. But does the timing of your carbs offer any additional benefits? A new study suggests that consuming carbs during your workout does not improve overall performance. Before I get into what the study found, let’s not get it twisted. This is not to say that pre-workout carbs can’t help performance. Or that you can’t have carbs during your workout. Or that removing carbs around a workout might not support fat loss. This was about whether drinking carbs during a workout helps you push harder. So, are sports beverages all BS? Not exactly. Most of the research on carb-based drinks was linked to longer-lasting endurance exercise. This is because your glycogen — a primary energy system for exercise — can last about 90 minutes. So, for longer workouts (think around 2 hours), consuming carbs can help support better exercise output. TRAIN YOUR HAMMIES Your hamstrings are one of the most important muscles when it comes to athletes in terms of injury, speed, flexibility and more. The hamstrings are directed involved in all aspects above. The hamstrings have 3 main muscles located on the back of the thigh and they are used in mostly everything, walking, running, jumping etc. The issue is that hamstrings are one of the main muscles nitrous for injury, torn hamstrings etc. this is especially evident in athletes during sprinting, running or in eccentric phases. This can be extremely painful and as someone who has done 4 times we sure know how it feels. Sudden stop, change of direction or deceleration is when these muscles are mot likely to be injured. Unsolved hamstring issues can posses further problems down the line, weak hamstrings can affect knee health, it can make supporting muscles compensate for weak hamstrings causing more chance for injury, the list goes on. Did you know that a brisk walk could supercharge your brain? 🧠✨ Recent research reveals that walking for 40 minutes, three times a week, not only keeps your body fit but can actually increase the size of your hippocampus—the memory center of the brain! How intense should your walk be? Let's keep it moderate but meaningful! Aim to walk within 50-75% of your maximum heart rate reserve. Not sure how to calculate that? Here’s a quick guide: 🌿 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗠𝗛𝗥): Subtract your age from 220. A lot of what you see on Instagram is rubbish, especially when it comes to fitness or movement practices. "Do this one move to burn belly fat", "Get jacked with this routine in 30 days", "Do this one trick to defend yourself". It's big business and big influencers selling you lies, so that you buy their stuff. But there is also some genuinely good stuff out there, aimed at educating and improving your life. It's important that this stuff gets shared, and that we remember there are good people out there. Sure, they might have something to sell too, but they're also happy if you get something out of what they give away for free. So with that in mind, I've decided to start periodically sharing the best fitness, health, martial arts or movement practice posts I've found that week. Regardless of the multiple attempts made over decades by research to extend lifespan using several hundreds lifespan-extending agents, alone and in combination, in numerous short-lived organisms (i.e., yeasts, insects, nematodes, fish, rodents), the results are modest at best. Furthermore, despite the large experimental literature on lifespan extension, there has been generally little scientific-based discussion/clarification concerning the question of the extent to which the average (mean/median) and maximum lifespans can be extended and whether and how these findings can be even remotely applied to humans. Although statistical and biological reproducibility in humans is far beyond any logical inference and the wildest extrapolations, a lesson can be learned: ☑️RESILIENCE is promising. Crucially in a dose-dependent manner, determined by the limited magnitude of biological plasticity. Meaning, by simple translation of the evolutionary principle of all times: The best adapted organism is the one that has the best chance of surviving… up to a point. 📣 TO-GO: To date, some (not all) disease-free non-human organism models (so far only🪱 & 🪰) appear to respond positively, yet very limitedly, to dietary restriction, heat-cold exposure, experimental drugs, and natural compounds, separately or all together.
