Jack was recently talking about the meaning of RAD or Ride Above Disability in his lesson. He shared that those with a disability often have a special ability too! And even if you dont have a disability you can still have special abilities. Jack shared the volunteers of RAD's special abilities were they are reliable, consistent so students can ride, and care about the horses! Meet the staff: everyone meet Claire! Claire’s journey with horses began in her home state of Texas, riding during the summers with family and at camp as a kid. Upon relocating to San Diego with her husband Pearson in 2021, Claire discovered RAD and began her journey as a volunteer. The bonds formed with the incredible community of volunteers, staff, horses, and students ignited a passion that led Claire to seek a career change and become an instructor. While Claire’s academic background is rooted in business, her heart is firmly in the arena, focused on building confidence and fostering a positive environment. What drives Claire is witnessing the joy on a student’s face after conquering a fear or mastering a new skill. Claire is motivated by the opportunity to help students achieve goals they never thought possible—a journey she finds endlessly fulfilling. Claire shared “RAD is one of her all time favorite jobs she’s ever had. She feels valued and able to express her thoughts and ideas and if they are ideas that benefit the program they will be implemented.” Claire is the driving force behind starting our Military and Veteran riding program!

Did you know RAD is planning to begin a military program? We need your help in making this happen. To facilitate military-sized riders, while keeping our adult adaptive riding students we need another large horse for the program. We are hoping to find a sponsor for a horse who is a kind, gentle, responsive, and very large... but he will need a sponsor as he wasn't in our budget this year. For the last 10 years, we've seen how our horses help change lives for the better in our adaptive riding program. Now we would like to include veterans, active duty and first responders. Our goal is to provide camaraderie and friendship in a relaxing, encouraging environment where everyone can share and learn about horses and riding. Do you know of anyone or a business looking to support an adaptive riding horse or help begin a veteran program? To cover both the cost of our instructors facilitating the program and the extra horse for these riders we'll need to raise $6,000 for 1 year and $200 per month for our instructor. Eddy and Kim having been riding together for about a year now. Kim LOVES being in a group lesson as she loves to make friends with all of her sidewalkers and team. Kim loves waving to everyone around the ranch and especially likes her riding friends in the same time slot. As soon as Kim gets out of her car she cannot wait to see Eddy and go for a ride with him! Eddy loves riding in a group because the sessions are longer and he loves being in the saddle longer. You can often see Eddy smiling at his side walkers, laughing and squealing with joy. Both riders are working on steering their horses, learning arena patterns, transitions, how to slow their horses down or speed them up and they both LOVE TRAIL! Eddy has been riding with us since we opened our doors in 2014, so 10 years now. And Kim joined shortly after in 2015!! Both riders have been dedicated and riding with us ever since!
This year, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club will sponsor Dixie’s specialized health needs with a $4,000 grant! Dixie is one of our most leaned upon and valued equines in the program and she is so deserving of this grant. Some of the club members got to visit a few weeks ago for a ranch tour, to meet Dixie, watch lessons and talk to volunteers and parents. Many of the club members spoke of how passionate they are about the therapeutic riding community and how much it benefits not only the students but everyone involved. They were thrilled to be supporting such a worthwhile therapeutic cause they shared! The RB Sunrise Rotary Club welcomed us last year for a presentation about RAD and they are a wonderful group of people helping the community. The Club’s fundraising efforts support seniors, children, veterans, disadvantaged, disabled and/or displaced individuals. As we enter the New Year we wanted to share who we are and what we do! THIS YEAR IS RADS 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!! Who is Ride Above Disability? RAD is a local 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults with disabilities. We have been in the Poway community since 2014, serve over 75 students weekly, have over 200 dedicated volunteers and 10 instructors! All of our fundraisers, events, grants, private donations go directly into the program to care for the horses and help keep riding fees low for our students. Therapeutic programs are not covered by medical insurance so it is important to keep our lessons affordable. What is therapeutic riding? Therapeutic/adaptive horsemanship contributes to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with disabilities. Additional benefits include improved Self-esteem and Confidence, Improved coordination, Improves concentration and attention span, works on fine and gross motor skills, Improves motivation, Effect of human-animal bonding, FUN and more! Because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. In addition to the therapeutic benefits, horseback riding also provides recreational opportunities for individuals to enjoy the outdoors. Our goal as a therapeutic riding instructor is to teach horseback riding lessons, where participants learn horsemanship and riding skills in a way that suits their individual needs. Almost anyone can ride with a doctors release as long as we can facilitate the ride safely. Students range from age 4 to 65. We serve students with anxiety, autism, epilepsy, stress, adhd, cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injury and many others. For more information please check out our website Radtrc.org. We thought it might be a good idea to introduce our staff in the new year. We have staff that have been with us from the beginning when we opened and some who are just recently joining us! To start us off, meet Amanda! Amanda has been with the program since 2014! Amanda grew up riding and loved horses from a young age. She moved to San Diego after college and noticed she was missing being around horses. She started volunteering at a local therapeutic riding center to fulfill her passion again. Amanda quickly became a volunteer rider and started teaching lessons 4 days a week! When she learned about Katie, Allie and Wayne opening RAD she immediately came with us to continue what she loved to do. When we first opened Amanda lead ALL of the volunteer trainings and taught lessons part time. Her love for teaching really shines through in her lessons and within her students. Her horse Hermione was even used in the program for a few years. Amanda still currently teaches with us on Sundays here! Amanda's favorite thing about the program is how inclusive it is and how many great life long friends shes made. Her favorite thing about teaching is seeing my students joy when they accomplish their goals in riding. We are so excited she gets to remain an integral part of RAD!

Everyone meet Butters! Butters is a new therapy horse with us here at RAD and the moment she came in, she stole our hearts. Butters is leased to us by the same owner/mom as Liberty! We could not believe it when she asked us if we were interested in using Butters for the therapy program. This is a dream come true to add another Fjord to the program. How did we get so lucky to now have a 3rd Fjord join us behind Dixie and Sven?! Butters was an immediate hit with the students and has even started lessons! We know there are many great places to give on Giving Tuesday. We’re grateful to you for considering us. Any money you donate this Giving Tuesday will go directly to helping our horses. We’re seeking help in covering our herds’ medical expenses. This year has been a rough one for veterinary care. Many of our horses are getting older, and as they age, their needs are changing. We’ve also brought in several larger horses so we can provide lessons to the adult community with disabilities, these bigger horses often require extra joint maintenance, or, in the case of the off-the-track thoroughbreds, have some extra wear and tear on their bodies from their previous career. We want to continue to give them the best possible treatments to maintain their comfort and happiness while they assist our riders in achieving their goals. Much like every other industry, the cost of those treatments and medications has gone up 20%-50% in the last couple of years. We adore our horses; we can’t put into words how much they mean to us. We love that they enable us to share our passion for equines with those around us. They are priceless. We love our horses; we never want them to go without the medications they need. Our RAD riding arena is now completed! This was made possible by the G. A. Foster Legacy Foundation and the Oliver Hoffman Foundation! With their support we now have a proper riding arena and area to exercise our horses. Michelle has been riding with us for just a year! In that time, she has begun steering, using her legs to help aid the horse in walking on, and working on warm ups for herself and her horse. She loves to go fast at the walk and keep moving during her lessons. You will often see Michelle with a big smile on her face when riding and around the ranch. Starting a therapeutic riding program from the ground up, we are always learning as a center in all aspects. We recently created a new volunteer mentor program! This program is to help new volunteers starting on and give them some guidance and help at the ranch. We have picked mentors who have been with the program for over a year and know the ins and outs of volunteering, the horses and program. The mentors have even begun leading volunteer trainings around the ranch! Bonnie, our volunteer coordinator, meets with the mentors quarterly to go over any new trainings and keep everyone up-to-date. We have been doing the mentor program for about a year now and are looking forward to building it even more! November means Turkey Trot Season is upon us! All of our students compete at the ranch in a timed "race" around the arena to see how fast they can go at the walk or trot. Eddy began riding with us the year we opened in 2014 and has been a dedicated equestrian ever since! We have seen Eddy grow from riding in a bareback pad to progressing to riding in a saddle. He is now able to adjust himself and get his body back to the middle. He is currently riding Honey who is the perfect height and narrow width for him. Eddy's favorite thing to do is go on trail. Welcome to the RAD family Alessandra! Alessandra, has been riding her whole life and recently started taking lessons here at RAD. She works so hard to sit up tall, maintain a proper riding position while learning to post the trot and is beginning to work on her two-point trot. We love that our students enjoy all aspects of horsemanship in addition to riding. Clara, was so excited she got to feed supplements after her riding lesson this week. She said "Do I get to feed the horses in the stalls? This is my first time feeding the supplements in their stalls! Its a good idea to feed them in there. I want to give them a little snack." Wow, thank you so much to the Jay L. Smith Family Foundation for their recent grant contribution of $14,000! Jay L. Smith have been supporters of RAD and our program for many years. We are blown away with their generosity over the years and this years donation. The Jay L. Smith Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) foundation that gives grants to organizations that promote family values, support the advancement of healthcare, and serve the disadvantaged. The mission of the Jay L. Smith Family Foundation is to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities by funding qualified non-profit organizations that promote family values, support the advancement of healthcare, and serve the disadvantaged. This grant will help fund our show season for 5 riders to attend without any RAD show fees! This is huge as many of our students want to participate in off site shows but it can become costly. This is our first ever grant in support of showing and will be a huge benefit to our students. We will also be able to get new arena supplies, props and sensory items for the arena. Most of our tools have been in the program since the beginning and will be wonderful to be able to get new supplies to better support our lessons. This grant will also support our financial assistance program, to make riding affordable for all who can benefit. Thank you so much!
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Volunteer of the Quarter…KATHIE ROSARIO Kathie has been volunteering with rad for 6 years! She started as a sidewalker and caring for the horses. A few years later she became a board member to help give back even further. Kathie volunteers as many hours she can at the ranch often staying late to make sure the horses have everything they need for the weekend. She will often come in after hours or on days we are closed to check their waters and make sure they don’t need anything extra. She likes to be in every lesson possible during Saturday lessons and loves to connect with the families. Kathie planned our first rad zoo trip with everyone! She spends countless hours connecting with our donors writing them personal notes and handwritten letters. You may have gotten one of Kathie’s notes before! She plans all of the end of the year gifts for our donors as well. She is on every committee that she can be helping to fundraise and plan large events. She will also work all of the fundraisers as well. Kathie recently started going with Allie to speaking engagements, community booths and events and connecting with our local community leaders. Happy birthday to our sweet Dixie girl! The OG Fjord at RAD! Dixie is 19 years old today. We purchased her in 2018 and she’s been such a blessing and great addition to our program. We purchased her because of our love of fjords and how great the breed is and we haven’t look back since. We can count on Dixie for her calm and loving nature. She is small but mighty so she is great for riders who might be nervous to start. She cleans all the horse paddocks and scrubs water troughs multiple times a week. Happy Birthday to our sweet Liberty Girl! Liberty was born on the 4th of July and is 29 years young today! Liberty loves spa days, naps in the sun, hanging out with her pals Dixie and Alice and her little walk trot students. You would never guess she is 29 as she is usually seen powering walking all over the ranch, going faster than all the other horses. Liberty has been a blessing for new riders and those who may be timid or a little shy to start. Due to her sweet personality and calming nature we can often use her in any situation. Malia and King had a great ride this week! Malia is in our sibling program and has really florished in her riding skills and horsemanship. She works hard to maintain a proper riding position while using light aids. Malia has ridden almost all the horses here at RAD and her goal is to now try a competition for fun! King is an Off the Track Thoroughbred and a longer time project for us. He was purchased to help us continue to help the many adult riders on our wait list. Eddy has been riding at RAD since we opened our doors in 2014! Therapeutic riding has helped Eddy improve his balance and coordination, improve vocalization, build and relax his muscles, core strengthening, working on fine and gross motor skills, self confidence, and develop social skills. When Eddy first began riding he rode in a pad at the walk only. Now Eddy is walking up the ramp with assistance, holding the reins on his own to steer his horse, has transitioned to riding in a saddle verses a pad, began trotting, he is verbalizing telling his horse to “go” with sounding out a “G” sound and he is now riding in a group with other peers and friends his age. Therapeutic riding has benefitted Eddy immensely throughout the years and we love having him as part of the RAD family. This May we had 5 interns come out from High Tech High and work with us for 30 hours a week all month! As part of their internship, they had to not only complete their hours but also learn about philanthropy and entrepreneurship by coming up with a project that would benefit the students at RAD! Our Saturday group getting ready for a game of red light, green light! Brett, Brielle and Frederik having been riding together in a group now for over a year! They all started as private lessons and have now joined forces! They all love riding together and get to share a sport and a connection with each other. Their favorite activity is to hit up the trails and check out the many horses and donkeys we have on the ranch. Group lessons are great for social interaction, making new friends, practicing patience and taking turns and its fun!
