Meet the Team: Everyone meet Wayne! Wayne is one of RAD's co-founders and also served as our Executive Director and Board President for a while as well. Wayne grew up on a small farm in Oklahoma which is where his love for horses started. In 1994, Wayne left for the United States Marine Corps. His twenty-year career was long and varied with Wayne serving a variety of jobs and locations. In 2010, Wayne started volunteering at Helen Woodward where he met Allie and Katie. The 3 of them volunteered and worked together at a variety of therapeutic riding centers around San Diego. Wayne retired from the Marines after 20 years of service and was looking for a fresh start. Wayne is passionate about therapeutic riding and this was something he really wanted to pursue. He was an integral part of the start up. Wayne believes the experiences from other centers formed the principles in which RAD was developed. Wayne has a Bachelor’s of Public Administration from National University and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University. Wayne currently teaches part-time on Saturdays and is going back to school for his second Masters Degree! Wayne's favorite thing about RAD is that it is a happy place for everyone. "I love that we try so hard to make it a great place for riders of all levels and abilities. The joy in a child’s eyes when they are riding, when they pass a goal they have set or realize they aren’t limited brings me so much happiness."
Eddy and Kim having been riding together for about a year now. Kim LOVES being in a group lesson as she loves to make friends with all of her sidewalkers and team. Kim loves waving to everyone around the ranch and especially likes her riding friends in the same time slot. As soon as Kim gets out of her car she cannot wait to see Eddy and go for a ride with him! Eddy loves riding in a group because the sessions are longer and he loves being in the saddle longer. You can often see Eddy smiling at his side walkers, laughing and squealing with joy. Both riders are working on steering their horses, learning arena patterns, transitions, how to slow their horses down or speed them up and they both LOVE TRAIL! Eddy has been riding with us since we opened our doors in 2014, so 10 years now. And Kim joined shortly after in 2015!! Both riders have been dedicated and riding with us ever since!

Being fully woman and veteran run organization, we are excited to practice what we are living and add a Military and Veteran riding program to RAD! One of our instructors Bonnie recently shared with us: "I grew up as a “military brat” and moved every couple of years. I’ve always loved horses and was able to take riding lessons starting at age 7. I couldn’t get my own horse because we moved so much. I continued to try to ride and take lessons where I could, and got my own horse when I was in high school. When I left for college, I was determined to keep my horse with me. After college, I joined the Air Force as a nurse and moved my horse with me to every new duty assignment. I owned her for 30 years and she helped give me a place to belong and a “grounding” in every new place. It was hard moving so much throughout my life. Leaving friends and family every time. Never feeling like I had a home. Always starting over. I was a part of the military as a child and adult for 45 years. My horse passed away right before our final move. And, after the military, my husband and I found ourselves settling in San Diego for job opportunities. It’s a strange feeling to leave the security of the military and live apart from family. We felt even more “homeless” in a way. I wasn’t sure how to connect with people outside of the military. The military has programs and activities to support service members separated from their families. All the other military families are in the same boat and it’s easier to make fast friendships and establish support systems. I found myself without family, without my horse, without the military community, and in a new place. I found RAD in Poway after looking for something involving horses. I started as a volunteer and was amazed by how rewarding it was. Working with the students, and seeing how much joy it brought them, always made my day! The environment was so friendly and working with the horses brought me an extreme sense of satisfaction and peace. As I continued to volunteer, it gave me the sense of community and belonging that I was desperately looking for outside of the military. I feel like I’ve finally found my 'home.'" Donate today!

We know there are many great places to give on Giving Tuesday. We’re grateful to you for considering us. Any money you donate this Giving Tuesday will go directly to helping our horses. We’re seeking help in covering our herds’ medical expenses. This year has been a rough one for veterinary care. Many of our horses are getting older, and as they age, their needs are changing. We’ve also brought in several larger horses so we can provide lessons to the adult community with disabilities, these bigger horses often require extra joint maintenance, or, in the case of the off-the-track thoroughbreds, have some extra wear and tear on their bodies from their previous career. We want to continue to give them the best possible treatments to maintain their comfort and happiness while they assist our riders in achieving their goals. Much like every other industry, the cost of those treatments and medications has gone up 20%-50% in the last couple of years. We adore our horses; we can’t put into words how much they mean to us. We love that they enable us to share our passion for equines with those around us. They are priceless. We love our horses; we never want them to go without the medications they need. Group trail rides are the best! Last Saturday, Rosalie, one of our students, volunteers and instructors in training, lead the 9:00 lesson on a group ride around the ranch! They had a blast riding together and got to connect with other friends and riders who are not necessarily in their group but all ride at the same time. Rosalie mentioned how great of riders everyone was and she had a great time watching them ride as well. We are so thankful that we are able to create these experiences and that everyone at RAD is like one big family. We are able to join together and rider with each other when we want! Therapeutic Riding is not only therapeutic for the students but also the volunteers. One of our volunteers recently shared just how much RAD, the ranch and the program means to her! "I started volunteering at RAD a little bit longer than a year ago and it has been very healing for me as volunteer. I came from Europe as an International Student and didn’t have big a network of friends and people at the time I started volunteering at RAD. I met amazing people and horses through RAD who helped and supported me during hard times even outside of the Programme. I’ve gained a wider perspective on life and talking to the instructors, other volunteers, students and parents of students has shown me that we all go through life and difficulties together and that we are not alone in this life. It has given me a great, deeper feeling of gratitude and shown me how unique and special everyone’s journey is. Something that touched me is the gratitude and acceptance at RAD and that everyone is welcome and can come as they are as well as the willingness to help and support each other. We purchased her because of our love of fjords and how great the breed is and we haven’t look back since. We can count on Dixie for her calm and loving nature. She is small but mighty so she is great for riders who might be nervous to start. She can also help adults and little kids of all sizes and loves ALL lessons from lead line to trail to independent riders. Welcome to the RAD Family Kathryn and Alessandra! Kathryn and Alessandra had riding experience upon coming to us and are both looking to continue their skills. They ride in a group together and get to share a social experience and friendship as well! They both come to tack and untack their horses before and after their lessons and ride mostly independently. One of their main goals is to do more trotting off lead. They are both working towards that goal by maintaining a correct body position, steering while off lead at the walk, working on posting, sitting and two-point trot. The students helped raise over $1500 in funds for the number of kicks they were able to perform. Some students got as high as 1000 kicks per class! Its been toasty at the ranch the past two weeks! We have been doing split shifts to keep all of our horses, volunteers, students and staff cool. Zach had a great ride on Rainy last week! He is improving his riding skills weekly by going off lead and trotting for longer periods of time. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Volunteer of the Quarter…JILL JONES Jill works tirelessly to take care of the RAD horses and support our students in their lessons. She cleans all the horse paddocks and scrubs water troughs multiple times a week. Aside from her regular day of volunteering, she is always quick to volunteer when we don’t have enough leaders or sidewalkers for lessons. The students love her, the other volunteers love her and the instructors love her! She also helps with special events like gift wrapping at Mary’s, Scripps Christmas tree lighting with the Girl Scouts, etc. And she provided lunch for the interns on Mondays in may. She really goes above and beyond and we are so thankful for her cheerful personality and hard work! Sven training week one is a success! So far he is super sweet, loves to stand for as long as you need, likes to explore trail and the ranch, LOVES being groomed and scratched and is enjoying all the people around him. Sven was made possible by The Albertsons Companies Foundation with their grant for program expansion! We were lucky to recieve the grant just at the right time Sven became available. Sven will be a great addition to our therapy program and having new students join the program! The Albertsons Companies Foundation, The Vons Foundation and their employees are incredibly proud of their generosity on the local stores and community levels of giving. Summer is coming and our horses could use some fly gear. Last year you generously helped us get fly sheets for all of them, this year we'd like to get fly masks for all of them. All of our horses tend to be hard on their masks, some of them will keep them a full summer, while others will rip them up in weeks or days (Pokey). We also have some horses experiencing pretty bad allergies this year due to the increase in bugs and pollens. (Add to that, horses that can only use one brand of fly spray) Please help us get the products that help keep the flies at bay! We are so excited to announce RAD received a grant from The G.A. Foster Legacy Foundation in the amount of $30,000! Words cannot describe how grateful and blown away we are. We literally had tears in our eyes. This grant is designated funds and will be used for creating a new parent seating/viewing area, horse sponsorship, horse medications, scholarship funds for our financial assistance program and more! The G.A Foster Legacy Foundation is a family foundation established in Southern California. We were lucky to receive a grant from them last year and this year they invited us to apply again! Eddy has been riding at RAD since we opened our doors in 2014! Therapeutic riding has helped Eddy improve his balance and coordination, improve vocalization, build and relax his muscles, core strengthening, working on fine and gross motor skills, self confidence, and develop social skills. When Eddy first began riding he rode in a pad at the walk only. Now Eddy is walking up the ramp with assistance, holding the reins on his own to steer his horse, has transitioned to riding in a saddle verses a pad, began trotting, he is verbalizing telling his horse to “go” with sounding out a “G” sound and he is now riding in a group with other peers and friends his age. Therapeutic riding has benefitted Eddy immensely throughout the years and we love having him as part of the RAD family. This May we had 5 interns come out from High Tech High and work with us for 30 hours a week all month! As part of their internship, they had to not only complete their hours but also learn about philanthropy and entrepreneurship by coming up with a project that would benefit the students at RAD! Our Saturday group getting ready for a game of red light, green light! Brett, Brielle and Frederik having been riding together in a group now for over a year! They all started as private lessons and have now joined forces! They all love riding together and get to share a sport and a connection with each other. We are getting excited for our first ever RAD Rodeo coming up next week! Students will compete here at the ranch in a barrel pattern for the fastest times at the walk, trot or canter. They are also helping to fundraise for their favorite horse team and will win prizes with the most donations made. The competition will be during lessons the week of April 4-8th. Our volunteer totals are in! In 2022, volunteers donated over 7100 hours of their time. Wow, this is amazing. This is also a 40% increase in volunteer hours from 2021. Volunteers not only assist with student lessons and horse care but also community events, fundraisers, admin, group projects and more. We are so thankful for all of our amazing volunteers! Every year, through the Hats Off to Volunteers Rancho Bernardo Community program, we get to nominate a Volunteer of the Year. It is so exciting to be able to recognize our volunteers as a part of the entire community, not only at RAD. Our 2022 Volunteer of the Year is Jill T! Jill started volunteering with us about 2 years ago and has NEVER missed a Saturday of volunteering. Jill will often cover when were short, is always caring for our horses beyond her normal shifts, helps train new volunteers, and likes to be in as many lessons as possible. We are so glad when our students can connect with one another and learn from each other. Malia, who is in our sibling program, showed Juliette how to properly round pen and exercise a horse for her lesson. Malia had recently worked on learning to round pen the horses and was able to apply her knowledge to our other students! Way to go Bella and Rain! Bella accomplished her first canter on Rain last week! Bella has been working really hard to maintain a proper body position, her posting, sitting and two-point trot and steering of Rain all with the goal of cantering.
