While Ruthie is currently working on her novel, I’m left mulling about things. Like how I wish I didn’t start this trip with borrowed energy in my energy envelope. I wish I didn’t have to balance the fun with the tasks because I don’t know if I will be able to play on the beach and make dinner. It’s hard to not have gratitude in every moment we are here, but it’s equally hard to not feel as though parts of these moments have been stolen. I could go on for what feels like forever about symptoms but the thing that really brings you down with things like long covid is the loss. You grieve the moments that pass by. You find yourself in the place that has always been your reset button and it’s not working as quickly as it should. You feel like you’re failing your kid - a kid who is rapidly reaching the age where she might not want to play on the beach with me next year. But then tonight happens. We walked down to the beach tonight in the deep dark of night. It was blustery and raining so hard. We laughed as our hoods blew down and our faces got soaked. And then Ruthie thanked me for that moment while we were still in the moment. She thanked me for showing her the ocean in the middle of the night in the pouring rain and for laughing so loud with her. And just as easily as she said it, some of that grief rolled out with the tide. Alot of time Ruthie, Lupe and I would be out on the farm in the house alone for days - the cupboards were usually a little more empty than full. While we would be waiting and not knowing when the car would be back so that I could fill them up, I’d make Ruthie bannock with a recipe from my kindergarten cook book. There were always berries for dipping, and most days I’d be adding kale from the garden. Cheesey bannock was a favourite too. Sometimes bannock would be breakfast and lunch for a couple of days in a row. Now for Ruthie bannock is a treat. She gets excited and runs out from her room on the random mornings when she can smell it cooking. She picks if she wants honey or blackberries to dip it in. Her memories are of the two of us sitting on the floor in the little yellow house eating bannock and sharing it with Lupe. It fills her belly and comforts her little old soul. So today I am reminded that in some of the greatest moments where I felt I was failing this kid, I was building her big memories. There was this spot we would pass in the boat heading out to fish in Zeballos. Once you rounded that corner you were on your way to the mouth of the Little Zeballos which was directly across from the twin islands where had a sea lion aggressively come at the boat, saw some cheeky river otters and saw a grey whale breach. We’d always hit this corner with the sun which made my job of spotting dead heads almost impossible. Sometimes the fog would be so thick we wouldn’t even see the out crop of land there and would go slowly hoping for the best and hoping even more the for the fog to roll out. This little lake Ruthie and I found has all these little echoes of Zeballos and I find myself telling her endless stories of dicey boat trips while pregnant with her. I tell her about the kind people we met - like Cliff who I bumped into at the cafe in Port McNeil who bought me a bowl of chowder and unknowingly kept me company just minutes after I first found out I was pregnant. I tell her about the massive trees and beaches full of shells. I tell her about the seals and the swans and the salmon and the bears. I tell her how Nonna and Grandma both braved the FSR because she was in my belly.
