Camas flowers abound in wild meadows around Victoria now--Beacon Hill Park, Mt. Tolmie, Playfair Park, etc. These plants were valued highly by our First Nations as a source of food, as they grow from an edible bulb. The bulbs are steamed before eaten. From a University of Kansas website page on Camas cultivation (I have heard that First Nations peoples in this area followed similar practices): "Some indigenous groups cultivated camas plots, which were owned by individuals and passed from generation to generation. Plots were cleared of stones, brush and invading plants, and harvested each year collecting several large sacks full of bulbs every time. It's great to see the Camas flowers every spring, here at Cattle Point in Oak Bay. First Nations people in this area actively encouraged the growth of these plants in spacious areas conducive to their growth. Black bear cubs only spend their first winter denning with mom, family dispersal typically happens in May or June when yearling cubs are approximately 16 months of age. Mom sends her cubs on their own when she is ready to mate and she will have cubs again this winter if her body has enough fat stores. Mom has many lessons to teach her yearlings such as how and where to source food, routes to take and where to seek shelter and safety. When bear families emerge from their winter den site they search for meadows to feed on spring grass and dandelions until the salmonberries ripen. It is important for yearlings to learn from mom where to source natural foods before they begin life on their own. We can all help give bears the best chance by respecting their space and securing garbage, food waste and attractants on our properties. #coexist
