Exciting new arrivals today: Dog violets (Viola riviniana)! ❤️ A thousand of these lovely little plants will be going into our woodland in the coming weeks, thanks to the generosity of @biodiversityuk who kindly donated them. Violets are a big part of our future plans as they're shade-tolerant (unlike a lot of wildflowers which need full sun). 🌸🌼 As our new woodland matures, we'll need lots of wildflowers like this to support our transition to a more shaded habitat. This will keep biodiversity high, making the most of the area's potential to support pollinators and the local ecosystem. We hope to support the Silver Washed Fritillary butterfly, for example - a stunning but rare species in Yorkshire whose caterpillars rely on violets as their food plant. 🐛🦋 We'll be organising a volunteer day shortly to help plant out these little beauties. Nagykanizsán, 2023. augusztus 20-án a Madárerdő tanösvényen készítettem a fotót a Nagy gyöngyházlepkéről (Argynnis paphia / Silver-washed fritillary). 🦋 A nagy gyöngyházlepke (Argynnis paphia), a rovarok (Insecta) osztályába, a lepkék (Lepidoptera) rendjébe, és a tarkalepkefélék (Nymphalidae) családjába tartozó európai faj. Magyarországon országszerte megtalálható. A feltűnően nagy lepke (ez a legnagyobb, Magyarországon is előforduló gyöngyházlepke) hímjének szárnyát élénk sárgásvörös alapon sötét foltok és vonalkák tarkázzák. Jellemző a fekete rajzolatú erek kiterjedtsége. A nőstények fakóbbak, sárgásak vagy zöldesszürkék. A keleti gyöngyházlepkétől (Argyronome laodice) megkülönbözteti, hogy szárnycsúcsa kihegyesedik; rajta nincs fehér folt. A barnásfekete hernyók sárga tüskéket, csíkokat és foltokat, valamint két hosszú fejtüskét viselnek. Július és augusztus között csak egy nemzedéke van. Főképpen erdei réteken, nagyobb tisztásokon figyelhetjük meg, de felkeresi a réteket és a szántóföldek mezsgyéit is. Gyakori, egyes években jelentősen felszaporodik. Főként aszat- és bogáncsfélék nektárját fogyasztja; kertekben gyakran a nyári orgonán látjuk. A nőstény fatörzsekre vagy ibolyák közelében a talajra rakja a petéit, és azok telelnek át. A hernyók tavasszal kelnek ki, és többnyire májusban bábozódnak; tápnövényeik az ibolyafélék. The best butterfly experience I had last season was a visit to Gloucestershire’s Daneway Banks in mid-July, not least because I had a relaxing lunch with an old friend at the Daneway Inn, at the bottom of the hill, before spending an invigorating couple of hours on the reserve – The reserve is best known for having a large (relatively speaking) colony of Large Blue Butterflies, the first of which (my first ever) I saw about five minutes after entering the reserve – as a bonus I also saw my first White Letter Hairstreak and a good array of other butterflies (a Silver-washed Fritillary being the most conspicuous) and day flying moths, the most obvious of which were Six-spot Burnets – a truly memorable afternoon. Kaisermantel (Argynnis paphia) Der Kaisermantel ist unser größter heimischer Perlmutterfalter. Er fliegt in naturnahen Wäldern und ist besonders auf blühenden Disteln oder auf Wasserdost anzutreffen. Die Weibchen legen ihre Eier nicht an den Fraßpflanzen der Raupen (Veilchen) ab, sondern in die Rindenritzen von in der Nähe stehenden Bäumen. The silver-washed fritillary is a large fast flying butterfly, separated from other fritillaries by its pointed wings and silver streaks on the undersides which can be viewed as it stops to feed on flowers such as Bramble. Although the butterfly is seen mostly in sunny glades and rides, it actually breeds in the shadier parts of adjacent woodland. In southern England, a small proportion of females have wings that are bronze-green, known as the form valezina.
