The red porgy fish is reddish on top and silvery-white on the bottom, highlighted by rows of small blue spots along the upper body. It has two blue streaks, one above and the other below the eye. The teeth are pronounced and the back teeth are molar-like. Young red porgy are typically found closer to the shore at a depth of around 60 feet and are usually found in grass beds. As they mature, red porgy prefer deep, warm-water zones of the continental shelf in the western Atlantic from North Carolina to Argentina. Red porgy are carnivorous bottom feeders that use their strong teeth to eat snails, crabs and sea urchins. They tend to feed in schools and migrate looking for food. The goldsinny wrasse Ctenolabrus rupestris is brown, greenish or orange-red in colour. It is easily distinguishable from other wrasse species by two dark patches, one on the dorsal fin and one just in front of the tail fin. This is the shore rockling. There are a few species of rockling, two of the most commonly seen being the shore and five-bearded rocklings. Both species can grow large for rocky shore fish. They are often confused with eels or other species, as they have slippery black skin, a long dorsal fin and barbels sticking out of their faces. Rocklings are usually found under large rocks on the lower shore, stranded out of the water. Do you believe in reincarnation? Well, for me the jury has always been out. However, since we have lost our darling boy Henry just before Christmas we have had more and more examples of other animals that seem to latch onto us and are unequivocally friendly. From a deluge of Robins (one with unusual white wings) who are so tame you can literally pick them up. The Elusive Wild Boar🐗 As some people wouldn’t realise, here in the UK we have a population of wild boar living most plentifully, in the Forest of Dean. These animals have always been on my bucket list to photograph. I’ve tried for days, trekking through the forests, squelching through mud, hiding away in the bushes trying to catch a glimpse of one. There’s been early mornings, late nights, full days out in the forest searching, all to not even catch a single glimpse of one. Finally, on Easter Saturday, I ran into my first boar pair! My heart was racing but I managed to photograph one in the undergrowth. Although there are clearer and better shots, all the time and effort feels like it really paid off. The Common medium, or ‘Predatory’, stonefly is one of 34 species of stonefly in the UK, and is on the wing from April until June (nymphs are present all year-round). Stoneflies are common around fast-flowing, upland streams and rivers, but can be found in some still waters. The larvae spend their lives hiding among the gravels and feeding on algae, plants and invertebrates. The adults hatch out, usually in the summer, and do not travel very far from the stream; they are often found on riverside rocks and trees. The common furrow bee belongs to the sweat bee genus, also known as Lasioglossum. It is the largest genus of bees, containing over 1700 species in the world, 32 of those live in the UK. They often nest in soils, with some species nesting on their own, and others nesting in groups. Males are slender and dark in colour, with an orange – brown colouration on the fist half of their abdomen. The female is broader, and dark brown, they are covered in short orange hairs, which are particularly visible on their back legs, which are used to collect pollen. The snub-nosed spiny eel (Notacanthus chemnitzii) is a member of the family Notacanthidae, the deep-sea spiny eels, which are not true eels (Anguilliformes). The snub-nosed spiny eel exists in waters all over the world, except in the tropics, ranging in color from light tan to bluish grey in small ones to dark brown in large ones. Its primary food is sea anemones. The eel usually lives in deep waters, mostly more than 200 m below the surface. Female snub-nosed spiny eels reach maturity around 18 years old, and are larger than 55 cm in length at maturity.
