Picea glauca ‘Mac’s Gold’ is another conifer I purchased as a one gallon tree 5 years ago. It puts on a great spring show which I’ve failed to note the length of, but I would say it probably lasts around 6 weeks from beginning to end. When I lived in Missouri my daily commute took me by a yard that had a pair of gorgeous blue spruce. At the time I had a good sized side yard and a beautiful lawn but no trees. I started googling trees and came across a couple of specimens that immediately had me smitten and I’ve been low key obsessed ever since. I never planted any when I lived in Missouri but last year I planted 3 here in Milwaukee. Allow me to introduce my weeping beauties. First up is Beast. He’s a Weeping Norway Spruce aka Picea abies Pendula. Next up is Beauty. She’s a (staked) Weeping White Spruce aka Picea glauca Pendula. These two were planted last Summer by a local landscape company. Shout out to Steve and his team @crawfordtreemke 🙌🏼 And last but not least is Chuck, another Weeping White who is not staked. I planted Chuck myself last Fall in honor of a dear friend who was battling cancer and has since passed. (We miss you Chuck!) The beautiful “berries” you see are immature cones. I read that the trees produce both male and female cones, though I’m not sure which ones look like berries. Picea mariana ‘Edelweiss Weeping’ is entering its second spring in my garden, and appears to be quite happy. I don’t know why this species isn’t grown more in this area. Also known as black spruce, bog spruce, and swamp spruce, this tree is native to northern North America and found widespread throughout all of Canada. For this reason, I’m sure most people think it will not grow here. I have three different cultivars, and my oldest one is now entering its 7th summer here in middle Tennessee, and looks as healthy as any tree in my yard. Anyone else ever have a favourite tree? For me, that big tall Spruce (second tall one from the left) has always been one for me. It’s the tree that grew right behind my childhood home, that I would see every day as it grew along with me. Picea pungens ‘Gebelle’s Golden Spring’ was a last minute addition to an order I placed with @crowfootnursery in the fall of 2020. At the time, I was looking for ‘Spring Ghost’, and Paulie recommended this one as an alternative. It reliably puts on a wonderful yet somewhat brief show every year. The first photo was taken 9 days ago as the tree began its spring push, and the other 2 photos were taken yesterday as it begins to transition to its summer color. From beginning to end, the new spring color usually lasts around 2 to 3 weeks. As for ‘Spring Ghost’, which I also eventually acquired, its show is even more brief, usually only lasting around one to two weeks depending on the weather. It has been slower to push new growth this year for some reason, but I’ll be posting photos of it soon.

Sunken Forest in Kaindy Lake The lake was formed after an earthquake in 1911, which caused a major landslide, effectively creating a natural dam. Successively, rainwater filled the valley and created the lake. The lake is famous for the number of dead and bleached spruce trees that stick out of the water – remnants of the trees that were flooded when the lake was formed. The trees, together with the improbable turquoise water of the lake, make an incredibly scenic sight. Pretty much all pine needles, and the pile is already 1/2 gone! 😅 pine needles are famous for causing issues with grass lawns in our area, not only do the decaying needles make for super acidic soil, but a fall needle drop the from a couple big trees paired with Lethbridge winds can put enough needles on your grass to completely choke it out! 👎🆘 It is best to get the needles cleaned as good as possible in the spring, and if you have lots of pine trees on your property, consider some soil amendments to keep your pH balance in check ✅👍 We’ve always used @homedepotcanada bags for the majority of our yard waste, have debated going for enclosed options for the trucks/trailers and we might get there before the fall season rolls around.. but it’s really not a big difference in the end! I honestly don't know where to start with this piece. I feel so much with it. Salmon leather, mountains, trees, sky, sun, swertgrass, its creation was an act of self care. A piece for me, by me. There are so many beautiful things happening in the garden right now that it makes it hard to know what to share first! The Japanese maples are all showing off, but the conifers are now starting to do the same. This Picea omorika ‘Roter Austrieb’ is putting on its incredible spring show, pushing purple new growth. The color only lasted about a week last spring, but I’m hoping I’ll get a few more days to enjoy it this year since we are experiencing some much cooler weather as of late.
