Thousands of mosques, churches, homes, restaurants, colleges and other buildings have been turned to rubble across the Gaza Strip since October 7. A report from the United Nations Development Programme found that the war has set back human development in Gaza more than 20 years. That setback will increase the longer the war goes on, according to the U.N. Roughly 86,000 housing units have been destroyed and almost 300,000 more have been damaged in the Palestinian territories, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. Additionally, 25,000 buildings have been destroyed, 32 hospitals forced out of service, and three churches, 341 mosques and 100 universities and schools destroyed, according to the Palestinian agency. Thousands more Gazans are estimated to be missing under the debris, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense. 📷 a wedding I passed in the street today #poepateticphotography #streethaunting #flâneusephotography #womenphotographersaustralia #australianwomenphotograph #womenphotoaus #aussiestreetphotography #womenphotographers #womenphotograph #womensphotoalliance #womeninphoto #womeninstreet #womeninphotography #femlens #kinshipphoto #fotoroom #unexp_collective #unexp_australasia #SPi_collective #auswip #aaspi #womenstreetphotographers #mystreet_women #lenscratch #flakphoto #theappwhisperer #mobiography #artofmobile #thephotosector

"Street-Hauntings - Study I" I've been playing with some artsy photo-techniques lately for a foto-series I'm workimg on with a friend (pictured here, although you might not be able to identify her 🤫😉). We were originally planning to stick a few well known historical streets in our city but found this one while out location-scouting and fell in love with the lighting and the claustrophobic vibes. The general theme of the photo series will be local ghost-legends and what you're currently looking at is a first attempt at depicting some ghosts, in this case by simply photographing with a rather low shutter-speed while the model is walking brikly (had to keep my hand real steady because I forgot my tripod that day 🤣) - combinig this with a few of the props and historical outfits we recently bought and I think we'll habe a pretty convincing lady-in-whity type specter, right? 😁 (Also trying to post this without hashtags and ad those as a comment because several people told me that apparently helps with the algorithm lately - does anyone know if that's actually a thing?)

#minihaul from @chipping_norton_oxfam yesterday. As always, an extremely good selection with loads of interesting ephemera to browse in addition to the books. I'm particularly delighted with the Hemmingway, which not only looks utterly gorgeous in the sunshine but has got curiously grumpy notes written around the text. #flaneuse #laurenelkin #donneribelli #einaudi #streethaunting #andareazonzo #perdigiorno #curiosità #esplorare #scoprire #crescere #sapere #trasgressione #virginiawoolf #jeanrhys #agnesvarda #parigi #newyork #londra #tokyo #venezia #katiabagnoli #olympedegouges #marydelcont

Läst en bok ur bokserien Penguin Little Clothbound Classics. En av de små och tjusiga utgåvorna. . Virginia Woolf, denna utgåva från år 2022. . A Room of One's Own"). . #boktips #virginiawoolf #streethaunting #penguinclassics #littleclothboundclassics

Books are everywhere; and always the same sense of adventure fills us. Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books - Virginia Woolf I have to say at the moment I feel torn. I love Virginia Woolf and I don't. She's one of those writers for me where I think "I wish more people wrote like her". And then I move to the next story and I'm finding my mind wandering. Not because she's a bad writer, but quite the contrary, her style is probably far bit advanced for me. I will revisit this one day because it's like a one day read and I'm also exploring more of her books in 2024. If you've read any of her books - recommendations are most welcome! #bookstagram #bookstagramindiareads #currentlyreading #chrisitianquotes #christianwomen #readeverywhere #christianwomencommunity #christianliving #christianposts #readersgonnaread #readerlife #coffeefirst☕️ #coffeeandbooks #christianreading #bookreelsofinstagram #bookreelsindia #bookquotes📖 #booktok #virginiawoolf #streethaunting #aroomofonesown

🇬🇧 Embarking on Virginia Woolf’s ‘Street Haunting and Other Essays’ is like stepping into a literary time capsule, where the city’s rich history converges with the author’s contemplative musings. 📚Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🖋️ Woolf’s unique perspective on time is a highlight, seamlessly weaving historical layers and revealing the echoes of bygone eras in the contemporary cityscape. As she strolls through London’s streets, readers become companions in her exploration of the city’s past and present. 📖 Woolf’s skillful use of language extends beyond historical narratives. Her fascination with the interplay of light and shadow paints a vivid and contemplative atmosphere. The River Thames, bustling streets, and quiet corners come alive through her prose, transforming London into a living, breathing entity with its own pulse. 🏙️ Moreover, ‘Street Haunting and Other Essays’ is not merely a conventional guide to the city but a deeply personal journey. Woolf seamlessly integrates her reflections, intertwining the external and internal landscapes. This interweaving adds a layer of intimacy, offering readers not just a guide but a profound glimpse into the author’s inner world. ✨ In conclusion, ‘Street Haunting and Other Essays’ is a literary masterpiece that defies the conventions of travel writing. Woolf’s ability to blend the tangible with the intangible, the historical with the contemporary, makes this collection a timeless exploration of both a city and a brilliant mind. It undoubtedly earns its five stars, not just for eloquence but for its enduring resonance with readers. #VirginiaWoolf #StreetHaunting #LiteraryJourney #LondonExploration #BookReview #FiveStarRead #VirginiaWoolfBooks #TimelessBook

I recently read @lauren_elkin_ ‘s book Flâneuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, and London, and I absolutely loved it.   If you’ve read anything about psychogeography, you’ll know about the flaneur, the man who walks around, exploring cities. The general consensus was that men could be a flaneur, but women couldn’t, because they didn’t have the freedom. Elkin’s book explores and challenges this idea.   The book’s blurb says “The flâneur is the quintessentially masculine figure of privilege and leisure who strides the capitals of the world with abandon. But it is the flâneuse who captures the imagination of the cultural critic Lauren Elkin. In her wonderfully gender-bending new book, the flâneuse is a “determined, resourceful individual keenly attuned to the creative potential of the city and the liberating possibilities of a good walk.” Virginia Woolf called it “street haunting”; Holly Golightly epitomized it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; and Patti Smith did it in her own inimitable style in 1970s New York. … With tenacity and insight, Elkin creates a mosaic of what urban settings have meant to women, charting through literature, art, history, and film the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes fraught relationship that women have with the metropolis.   Last year I read Wanderers : a History of Women Walking by Kerrie Andrews, which looks at “ten women who, over the past three hundred years have found walking essential to their sense of themselves, as people and as writers”.   Both books are very good. Next up, I plan to read Art Monsters: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art, also by Lauren Elkin.   #flaneur #flaneuse #walking #LaurenElkin #WomenWalking #Wanderers #KerrieAndrews #StreetHaunting #psychogeography

On World Photography Day 2023 at the new National Museum of Photography in Rabat (Morocco) within the repurposed 19th-century Burj Kebir Fortress in the Ocean neighborhood. This museum was initiated by the National Museums Foundation of Morocco and inaugurated on January 14, 2020. The exhibition is “Kourtna” which transcribes the unconditional love Moroccans have for football. “Football, soccer, or #kourtna … is a unique experience that condenses all the ranges of emotions that a human being can experience in life … More than a game, football is a metaphor for life and its fluctuations… It is a language commonly practiced across the globe... At the end of each of the National Team's matches at the last World Cup, the scenes of popular jubilation were proof that Morocco is a great African footballing nation, given the technical quality of its players and people's fervent passion for the "beautiful game." With the "Kourtna" exhibition, our ambition is to design a museum experience from a set of photos and themes, in order to illustrate the impact of football in Morocco through the eyes of fifteen contemporary Moroccan photographers and artists who invite you to immerse yourself in the exciting world of our football.” (Google-translated from the didactic panels that are in Arabic and French.) 1. The Bou Inania Madrasa hydraulic clock in Fez medina (above the shopfronts) was made by the clockmaker Abu Al-Hasan Ali Ahmed Al-Tlemsani, who completed it in 1357. Its mechanism remains unknown. Researchers consider that it would have worked according to an unequal time system, a system that separated the day (from sunrise to sunset) into 12 equal parts and the night (from sunset to sunrise) into 12 other equal parts. It is believed that the time was indicated by opening windows, which in turn were activated by a system of pulleys connected to a water tank, a float and a carriage. But the operation and scheme of the clock mechanism is unknown. #BouInaniaMadrasa #hydraulicclock #MedinaLife #Fez فاس ⴼⵉⵣⴰⵣ Fès Aug 2023 #travellinglight #poepateticphotography #streethaunting #flâneusephotography #womeninstreet #womenphotographersaustralia #australianwomenphotograph #womenphotoaus #womenphotographers #womenphotograph #womensphotoalliance #womeninphoto #womeninphotography #femlens #kinshipphoto #fotoroom #unexp_collective #unexp_australasia #auswip #aaspi #lenscratch #flakphoto #mobiography #artofmobile #womenstreetphotographers #mystreet_women

The legendary @cafehafa, known for its simplicity, overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar and was a hive of counterculture. It was founded in 1921 by Mohamed Alouch, a young Tangier native who at only 20 years old managed to open this leisure space for the residents of Marshan neighborhood, the center of the city. The café soon attracted foreigners who settled in Tangier in the mid-20th century. Later the place was frequented by artists, among them were the Rolling Stones, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, US author Paul Bowles and Chilean painter Claudio Bravo. #CaféHafa طنجة Ṭanja (Tangier) Aug 2023 #travellinglight #poepateticphotography #streethaunting #flâneusephotography #womenphotographersaustralia #australianwomenphotograph #womenphotoaus #womenphotographers #womenphotograph #womensphotoalliance #womeninphoto #womeninphotography #femlens #kinshipphoto #fotoroom #unexp_collective #unexp_australasia #auswip #aaspi #lenscratch #flakphoto #mobiography #artofmobile #storyofmystilllife #womenstreetphotographers #mystreet_women

The Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures where, among many other amazing things, there is a magnificent mosaic piece brought from the site of Volubilus, entitled Navigum Veneris. It depicts the goddess Venus sitting in the back of the ship. The exhibit is enriched by a multitude of exceptional works. All of these artefacts confirm that a fruitful business has existed between the Mediterranean civilisations and indigenous people thanks to the geographic location of Tangier at the confluence of maritime routes. Due to its geographical location, the Tingitane peninsula was a particularly attractive environment for prehistoric populations. The abundance of sites discovered and their chronological varieties demonstrate the density and antiquity of the settlement, and this already during the Lower Palaeolithic (Acheulean), the Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian, Aterian), and the Epipalaeolithic. Neolithization inaugurates a new era characterized by the shaping of clay and the polishing of axes. The practice of animal husbandry is well attested by the presence of remains of domestic animals, and the millstones reflect the beginning of agricultural activity. With the sedentary lifestyle and the construction of dwellings appear the first peasant communities of Morocco to stability and production. Dar El Boukhari mansion was built during the second phase of the construction of the palace of the time of Pasha Ahmed Ibn Ali Arrifi in 1151 AH / 1738. Dar El Boukhari is today considered as one of the examples of the internal architecture of the beginning of the Alaouite dynasty. #KasbahMuseumOfMediterraneanCultures طنجة Ṭanja (Tangier) #Medina Aug 2023 #travellinglight #poepateticphotography #streethaunting #flâneusephotography #womeninstreet #womenphotographersaustralia #australianwomenphotograph #womenphotoaus #womenphotographers #womenphotograph #womensphotoalliance #womeninphoto #womeninphotography #femlens #kinshipphoto #fotoroom #unexp_collective #unexp_australasia #auswip #aaspi #lenscratch #flakphoto #mobiography #artofmobile #storyofmystilllife #womenstreetphotographers #mystreet_women
