Meet our Marathoners!!!! Meet Sara!! " I have run three half marathons, but this is my first full marathon! I've loved running ever since being on my cross-country team in high school. After moving to NYC last year, I went out to cheer on the NYC Marathoners in November 2021 as they finished the last leg of the race through Central Park. To make a long story short, I was so inspired that I decided right then and there that I would run the next year (November 2022)! I've had the pleasure of participating in Best Buddies and other similar programs (i.e., Camp Barnabas, Special Olympics) ever since I was in high school, so I was particularly excited to get to run for, raise money, and raise awareness for Best Buddies! This organization had a huge impact on the schools I went to, helping teach both kids and adults to support the inclusion of friends with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The friendships I've made with people with disabilities are so special to me and have taught me so much. I am proud to support Best Buddies as they continue to promote positivity and inclusion in the world for many years to come! Meet our Marathoners !!! Meet Tori! "This is my 3rd full marathon, but my first marathon of this size! My boyfriend has run this marathon and is running again this year. He has always talked about the magic aspect of this race. The feel good moments, where the whole city is coming together to cheer on the runners. I am very excited to feel that energy. Plus the fact that they raise so much money for all these great causes makes it feel like you are doing something positive for this world I actually did some fundraising for best buddies in high school. I work in medicine don’t often get to assist in the every day lives of people with IDD. I love the work that y’all do and I wish more of my patients had the opportunities for employment, leadership, friendships, and living that Best Buddies believes in When I travel, I love nothing more than running in new places. It’s been one of my favorite ways to see new cities both in the US and abroad. Everywhere from the Caribbean to Croatia to Brazil, I’ve explore via running. Marathoner Saturday (special feature) Meet Jennifer Chinchilla !! "The TCS New York City Marathon will be my first marathon. It's so special to me as I am a native New Yorker, and I've cheered on many friends who have run the marathon in the past. Being raised in New York City, I love the strength and grit that this city carries in its veins. We're built different here, and I know I'll be able to run a strong marathon running in the greatest city on earth! Running became my solace during the pandemic lockdown years. I fell in love with running during a time that was so chaotic and uncertain. Those years in lockdown became a rebirth for me, using the time to work on myself and my goals. 2022 has been the culmination of all of the hard work I've done for the past 3 years. Therefore, it was a no-brainer for me to sign up for a marathon. I was inspired by seeing my friends run NYC in 2021, and I felt it was finally my time to complete a marathon. I can't think of any other place I'd want to do my first marathon than in my hometown of New York. The Best Buddies organization is doing beautiful work for children and adults with IDD. This cause is so special to me because my grandmother raised her son, my uncle, with Down's Syndrome for 45 years. Her concern was always to make sure her son had the best opportunities possible to become the best version of himself. Best Buddies is able to provide these services and opportunities to people like my uncle, Edwin. When my grandmother passed, these services allowed Edwin to continue a fulfilling life, and therefore, I'm honored to run on behalf of Best Buddies, my uncle Edwin, and my grandmother, Alicia. Her strength and tenacity have been with me throughout life but especially throughout the training of this marathon. I know she will be with me on Marathon Sunday. I'm a dog mom to a 4-year-old Yorkipoo named Lola. She's gone on some of my easy short-mile runs and has been the best training partner! Marathon Monday !! Meet Michael!!! "This will be my 3rd Marathon. I've run The Marine Corps Marathon in DC and Steamtown Marathon in Scranton PA. I moved to NY in 2014 and have wanted to run NYC ever since. My kids are little so I felt it wasn't fair to take Sunday mornings for 3 hour runs by myself until they got older but now that they are 3 and 5 they are plenty happy watching Bluey while I'm out beating the pavement. - My niece, Ella, is 9 years old and has Down Syndrome. She has been such a shining light in my life and it all of our lives since she was born. She is particularly fond of my Son Jack. Whenever we spend time together as a family I am struck by how well kids are able to just see each other as cousins and friends and not that Ella needs to be treated any differently. That care for inclusivity is what drew me to Best Buddies. I ran my first marathon after reading "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. I was so into the idea of minimalist running that I ran Marine Corps in Vibram Five-fingers (those funny looking toe shoes). It's Marathon Monday!!!! Meet MaryEllyn Myer!!! "This will be my 3rd marathon, but my first time running in NYC! I have also run the Marine Corps Marathon in 2017 and the Chicago Marathon in 2019. I live in Upstate NY (about 3 hours north of the city) and love to visit when I can. But I can’t wait for the excitement, crowds and energy of race day! My "why" is my son Brody. Brody was diagnosed with autism when he was 16 months old. He is now 11 years old and will be starting middle school in September of this year. We are thrilled that his school has an established Best Buddies program that he will be able to be a part of. I am so excited to continue to fundraise for this wonderful organization and to give back to them since I know that Best Buddies will be a huge support to our family as Brody gets older. A unique fact about myself is that if I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be peanut butter! I also don’t have a middle name." •Day 16• Well today was a good day! Ran the 1 mile benchmark 29 seconds faster than last time with a 5:46! After being hospitalized with covid and having constant heart issues from it at only 25 years old, I’ve been hesitant to push myself too hard these past month! Today, I did a stress test on my heart and the doctor said that the swelling caused from covid has gone down and they don’t see any permanent damage!! This is amazing news because I’ve been super anxious about it. Slowly improving and feeling more healthy! Next time, SUB 5:30?! ☺️ #marathon #marathontraining #NYCmarathon #teambestbuddies
•Day 14 & 15• Oof I’ve been bad at posting! Got a little otf workout done on Sunday and an outdoor run before school on Monday 🤩 Need to start ramping up the mileage but that will come during the summer months 😅 Feeling good! Ran the 1 mile benchmark this morning, and I have a stress test this afternoon to check to see if there’s any permanent heart damage from my second covid hospital stay a couple weeks ago! •Day 12• Went to cobs hill to run today! Ran a total of 4.2 miles and got to run the last mile with @_wand3r3r 🥰 Pretty happy about this run because I’ve been working on finding a pace and maintaining it. Today I averaged a 7:45/mile which was much faster than in the past. Seeing steady improvement is always a nice touch.
