Last Saturday, my wife and I went with a team from church to help a community in Chicago. We spent the day cleaning up and beautifying a community park. This was hard work and I am suffering now with numerous sore muscles. These pains are minor compared to the suffering that others endure because they try to do something good, like free medical work around the world, disaster relief, teaching, first responding, etc. Even beyond the pains that these people endure are the persecutions and murdering of believers in Christ in many parts of the world. These people are giving their lives to spread the good news of salvation, redemption, and hope.I Peter 2:19-20 says, "For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God." Doing good often requires sacrifice. It is this suffering that God sees and honors among those who believe in Him. Do. Hard. Things. WARNING — LONG POST — Rim to River Endurance Co. - what a great day for a “fun run” Rim2River100k in the gordge. The trails were tough and the “scramble” was a gut punch — but hey — you can do anything four times…right? Falls were had, blisters were formed and popped, toenails were bruised…egos maybe more so. It wasn’t a PR but we got it done…19:40:53 and a 2:40a.m. finish. Had a blast running three of four laps with Sara Lunden … she’s a hill crusher … and she does a killer job taking care of blisters on the trail. The trail community is amazing and supportive of all running levels. A majority of us out there are just “average runners,” trying to hack it with the elites. Carly Lemley was amazing as always. She gave up her Saturday and Saturday night to do all the things — tape my feet — change my socks — fill the vest and water bottles. I’m super blessed to have her. She was a trooper. David Crites got me through that final lap. On short notice he was more than willing to give up his Saturday with his family to pace me. He has incredible knowledge of the trails and that was a massive help. His encouragement pulled me through that lap to the finish. I’m so thankful for his willingness. so_cal_runner laid out the plan and I tried to follow it as best I could. It wasn’t always perfect - but I just kept working. I’m thankful for his friendship and for willingness to coach a below average runner 👀. He’s encouraging and constructive when he needs to be. I’m looking forward to this next block and what it holds. On to the next coach! Running is just better with friends. Two down - one to go. What an amazing and inspiring husband I have. 100 miles! Absolutely unbelievable to watch and be a part of. It’s incredible what I watched the runners endure, overcome and accomplish over the course of this race. The highest highs to the lowest lows. To work through the pain, fatigue and doubt and continue to get to the line again and again. I had no idea what the world of ultra running was until a few years ago. It has opened my eyes to so see that we are capable of so much more than I thought was possible. Ultra running is a way to get to know yourself on a deeper level. There is magic in misery. It has been a journey for Travis to get here. When he started running it was one block at a time. To run a mile seemed daunting. A 5k? Half Marathon? Marathon? Crazy. Now here he is with 100 miles complete. If he stopped trying he wouldn’t have known what he was capable of. It’s been a life changing journey. We are capable of so much more than we think we are. If you think you can’t do something, have you tried? You are capable of so much. Believe in yourself. A HUGE THANK YOU to all of our friends and family that came to support and followed the online tracker. There were so many cheering Travis on and he felt the love. Run 62 17Km- SEVENTEEN! I woke up dreading this run. I knew I could do it but I had the memory of my great bonk back in the fall (run 28) where I couldn’t finish the Reservoir loop because the hill drained me of energy. This was that AND more. And I bloody did it. 🥳 There are a number reasons for my success; better endurance from longer runs, actual hydration and an energy gel that certainly help the process, and I purposely held back so that I’d have enough to get up. It felt awful going up… but I kept going. #endurebitch There’s a lot going on here. If I can continue at this pace I can likely run a sub 2 hr 1/2 marathon. That’s *slower* than I want and I’m trying to figure out if maybe I’ve over-estimated what I can do. Also my calves are screaming right now. I am lamenting the fact that we have so many stairs in our house. I feel proud of myself for running the longest distance I ever ever gone- but also frustrated that my time feels slow. I feel slow. So it’s a mixed emotion kind of thing. The first 14km of this run I felt good and in control… the last 3 I felt like a drunken sailor - just trying to stay in a straight line and telling myself not to stop. Song that Motivated Me: “Pump up the Jam” by Technotronic. (Old school baby!) Called an audible this morning and decided to swap my runs this weekend due to storms tomorrow AM. Sounds smart right? Not so much when you make the decision at like 10AM after you had a hearty and heavy breakfast annnnd when you get out late enough to “enjoy” the 75° temps, a dew point of 65, and wind gusts in the 20s, strong enough to push my 170# ass halfway across the road 😂😂 10mi with 2mi WU, then 7mi progression from MP to threshold, CD to mileage. We got ‘er done, but it got a little dicey there for a bit. Text my husband around mile 7 that I was fighting for my life. Please enjoy my emoji depiction of each mile. Today was about finding out what I’m capable of, and it turns out that I didn’t know I had another gear, or three. I recorded my best 5k, 10k, half, and full marathon times. I went into this race with the goal to stay under 4 hours, and leave my foot on the gas until the gas ran out. A fast start and the countless fans and spectators around the course pulled me along for most of the race. A hiccup in my left hamstring slowed me up around mile 12 but I just. Kept. Pushing. There was not a chance in hell I was going to give in to the doubts circulating in my mind. Not on this day. The last few miles were an absolute grind both physically and mentally before I turned the corner into an electric Memorial Stadium, crossing the finish line in 3:37:35 to see @sarahmkasper_ and our parents! I’m satisfied and a little bit in awe of what my mind and body can do. I left it all out there today, but I know I’m capable of more. We are all capable of more than we can fathom. 100x more.
