Bring your kids to work yes or no? Hi everyone— for those who are new here, I’m Lindsay Linton Buk, the artist behind Women in Wyoming. I’m a mama to two boys ages 4 (Hank) and 2.5 (Lucas). Including my boys at my openings is the opposite of a relaxing evening, but I wouldn’t trade the added chaos for the world because it means I get to share my joy with the ones I love most. I like to believe that somewhere in their memory an imprint is made seeing their mama in her element. Maybe that deepens their respect for women and girls or maybe it creates an example to cultivate such energy for themselves one day. At the very least, they’ll be able to look back at our family celebrating together, and I hope that makes them proud. 💚 Plus— they’ve been with me since the very first opening. I was 36 weeks pregnant with Hank when the exhibit debuted at the Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming in October 2019 (last slide), and two months postpartum with Lukey for my opening in Jackson, Wyoming at the Center for the Arts and Art Association galleries in August 2021. They’re along for the ride whether they like it or not. 😜 Where will the exhibit take us next?? In hindsight, it's super weird to me I didn't INTEND to live in Laramie. Honestly, I didn't want to leave my cottage back home in the country.💔 I needed to, so I threw a dart. Day 1 photo dump of #BookmarkedFestival I know the cool kids do this with zero explanation but God made me unique, not cool. So, first [well I took a nap, but that's beside the point... After the nap] I went downtown and was greeted warmly by the towns people. The owl you see is made of projectile points that were collected, and then pieced together sometime in the 40's. I lost a nice chunk of my beer money to good pens and Stevie Nicks CDs. It was only after that that I realized my car has a CD player. So! *Borat voice* Great success. The first event of Bookmarked kicked off with Fremont County students sharing their short works of fiction. I was the weird "Which one is yours?" "Oh none of them, darling.☺️" In the crowd again, but I think it's super important that kids know random goths support them. Especially when that random goth started riiiiiight abooout there. And they're published now. We quietly rolled in to the next event, with time to make new friends and get snacks made by the Lander High Culinary Arts students. Them kids got futures doe.🤤 So the second event was my first Slam Poetry event! (Now that I think about it my cousin tried to show me some things on YouTube) And omg! It was so fun! Lots of cheering, and clapping, and acting all crazy! I couldn't judge because I'd give everyone a 10/10! In 1925, Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first woman to be sworn in as a governor of any U.S. state. She defeated her opponent in a special election and succeeded her husband, the incumbent, who died just prior to the election. She was later appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Director of the U.S. Mint, the first woman to hold that position. She is still the only woman to have served as governor of Wyoming. The seed starting has begun! 🌱 Last year was the first time I began using the soil blocking method to eventually replace the plastic seed trays I use to start flowers. There are pros and cons to both, but the benefits to soil blocking are HUGE and worth the effort, in my very humble opinion. Seeds trays allow you to produce more plants in a smaller space. You fill the trays with dirt, plant your seeds, water and done! Sort of. lol The root systems of your flower/herb/vegetables can quickly become bound up if planted out late. Trays and soils dry up quickly and are also prone to diseases like dampening off. Then there is the issue of washing and storing all of that plastic and the fact that they deteriorate quickly. I have grown many flowers in seed trays though and will probably still do some just because I have SO MANY trays. With soil blocking, the process requires creating a nutrient rich soil with organic ingredients that retain water better. Seedlings grow incredibly strong and healthy root systems and produce better plants overall. Another big bonus in making your own seed starting soil is becoming peat-moss-free by using water retaining coconut coir. Once you have the tools for the job, you will also enjoy less clutter. I do, anyway! Seedlings that grow a tap root thrive in soil blocks because there is no root disturbance like you find when popping plants out of plastic trays. I started sunflowers in blocks last year and they were amazing! Check out the soil blocking information @blossomandbranchfarm. I have learned so much from this gal. Sickie Suckers! (Honey-Elderberry Lollipops) 🤒 Maybe not the best name, but I spent the day making these for my family who have winter colds and sore throats. Elderberries are a great source of Vitamin C and a powerful antioxidant. Combine that with pure raw honey and you’ll be feeling better in no time! Sickie Suckers Combine 1 cup organic sugar 1/2 cup raw honey 1/4 cup elderberry syrup You can also add cinnamon, ginger, and cloves to taste. Maybe even a little fresh lemon juice. Heat to 300’ and remove from heat. Don’t go past that temp or your liquid will scorch and ruin the sweet flavor. I have a whole bag of scorched suckers 😂) Pour into silicone candy or sucker molds and allow to cool. I have a hard time keeping these around for sick people. They’re so good!
