… Library reads 📚 📖 Family Family by Laurie Frankel I can appreciate the message of FAMILY FAMILY — that there are all types of adoptive families and not all adoption stories are tragic — however, I didn’t love the vehicle by which this message was delivered. I had trouble holding interest in the plot and found the characters to feel unrealistic. The children often spoke and acted in ways that didn’t fit with their stated age. Overall, this one fell flat for me, though I can see it doing well with a different audience. 📖 Mercury by Amy Jo Burns Though the drama of MERCURY had mystery, romance, and coming-of-age mixed in, at its heart it was a character driven exploration of family dynamics in small-town 1990s. The plot was simple yet engaging due to the writing style and compelling characters. When I first read the synopsis, I wasn’t sure if this would be a book I’d like. Good Morning May! 📚 I read 21 books this month. Not pictured are Nightwatching, She’s Not Sorry and The Great Gatsby. Although I read some excellent books (Birnam Woods, Brotherless Nights and Leaving), I spent most of the month being entertained by thrillers and new releases, courtesy of my library. I read ten books from my own shelves. I imagine my May reading will be much the same…a mixture of prize contenders and more fluffy books. As warmer weather approaches I gravitate toward less serious reads. I’m starting off the month rereading Huckleberry Finn before I move on to Janes, my most anticipated read of the year. No more mess! Messy books are fine, but I’d let a whole wall of my library get so out of control that it wasn’t just an eyesore, it was keeping us from using the space like we wanted. So I filled an IKEA bag with books to unhaul and rearranged my shelves. The clutter is gone and we can listen to music in my favorite place again🎶🎵📚 I love seeing the gorgeous Twilight series dust jackets from @kadivideo front and center on the side table and I made a little #meetmeinbooks area under the record player. There’s no King as his titles have their own shelves, and nothing from a series as the space is limited, but the books here are some that live rent free in my head. 🎉Duncraig Library will soon celebrate a very special milestone, turning 50 in July! We are working behind the scenes to plan a very special celebration, so we're feeling a little nostalgic! A lot has happened in the last 50 years, as our photos show! 📷 The first photo shows what was then the Sorrento Duncraig Library in the 1970s. New review: Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear This propulsive backlist mystery has atmospheric settings in England and Ireland and seriously flawed characters.It's the first of a series of 3 books centered around its main character. While a couple plot points may have been just a little too neat, I am definitely looking forward to reading the next two books in the series. I especially like that the series is only 3 books long; that feels like a reasonable commitment in my current season of life! How's your reading week looking? My calendar has been way too busy lately and isn't going to let up any time soon. And I know May can be as busy for many people as December with end of school, graduations, and all the attending details that go along with that. Tom Lake by @annpatchett was a solid 4 star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ family saga for me. Thanks @psplib for always keeping great books and my holds list! You will enjoy this perfect spring time book. In this novel, Lara tells the story of her summer acting at Tom Lake to her adult daughters at their family orchard in 2020. She tells about the play, actors, relationships and young love while finding yourself. This explores life before children and how we all change over time. Growth, love and adventure are key milestones along the way. I enjoyed the characters and the quick transitions between the past and current day wishing chapters. … 📖 Review: She’s Not Sorry by Mary Kubica An ICU nurse cares for a patient in a coma due to jumping off a bridge. A witness comes forward stating the patient was pushed. The nurse mistakenly gets close to the patient’s family and fears she or her daughter could be the next victim. Despite figuring out what was happening beforehand on several occasions, I still enjoyed reading SHE’S NOT SORRY. It was a very bingeable thriller and just what I needed when I picked it up – something that I didn’t have to think seriously about and could just go along for the ride. The plot contained some dark themes and had a lot going on with multiple story lines and a lot of characters, but it all came together in the end. . . . . . #TBT April Fools may have been at the start of the month, but it’s still National Humor Month for a few more days so it seems appropriate to celebrate the humor of Belvidere. Some people might say that a small town surrounded by farms can’t have a sense of humor, but Belvidere was actually the setting of its own comedy movie. The owner of the Belvidere Daily Republican, Frank T. Moran, commissioned the film in 1926 with Don O. Newland as the director. Newland was a traveling filmmaker. He went from town to town, that would hire him, with a mostly prewritten script. Each town performed a different spin on his “Hero” films. Here, he filmed Belvidere’s Hero, but he also made Janesville’s Hero, Huntington’s Hero, Tyrone’s Hero, and likely many more. The plot revolved around the town’s local newspaper reporting on a bizarre scandal within a prominent family. In Belvidere’s Hero, that was the fictional Henpeck family, who lived in the Funderburg House, although it still belonged to the Rhinehart family at the time. The film might not have been able to break out of the early movie gold rush, but it was important for the people who lived here. With 3,000 extras, there’s a decent chance someone from your family made at least a brief appearance in the film if you’re from an old Belvidere family.
